Baltic Coastal System Analysis and Status Evaluation
The Service of Sediments in German Coastal Seas – evaluation the function of marine benthic systems in the context of human use – Service functions of the Baltic Sea
The overarching goal of the project … is to bring together the distributed capacities in coastal ocean modelling in Germany and to build a common infrastructure …

Die Ziele von STopP
Main objectives of STopP:
(1) To fill gaps in knowledge concerning sediment characteristics, benthic organisms and birds from the intertidal to the subtidal zone of the northern Wadden Sea and adjacent offshore areas (completion of “Küstenmeeratlas”).
(2) To investigate gradients e.g. in the distribution of sediments, endobenthos and birds and their relation to each other from e.g. the inter- to the subtidal zones or from the coast (Wadden Sea) to the open North Sea.
(3) To evaluate to what extent sediment characteristics and underlying hydrodynamic forces are able to modify species diversity and food web structures within different habitats as well as to assess the habitat potential (incl. assessment of anthropogenic influence on habitats).
(4) To apply functional modeling approaches like statistical habitat models and ecological network analyses, to provide the basis for the development of assessment tools.
