Vocabulary Words

Culture – The totality of intellectual, artistic, social, and religious expressions that define a society or a group in comparison with another.

Claim for Rights- To ask for something considered a right.

Nation – A group of individuals with the same origins, territory, and language.

Agreement- an arrangement that is accepted by all groups and states.

Band - An Amerindian community recognized by the government and usually set up on a reserve.

Reserve – Lands the government has set aside for the use and benefit of Amerindians.

Nordicity – Term that refers to northern regions and all the issues that relate to cold, snow , and isolation.

Ancestral rights – Rights held by the descendants of Canada’s first inhabitants ( fishing, hunting, trapping, etc.)

Anthropologist- Specialist who studies the development of human beings.

Kayak – a boat, invented by Native people who lived in nordicity. It was an adaptation which allowed them to thread their way through the ice.

11. As recently as 6o years ago, large ampunt of Amerindians led a nomadic life. Today, the majority of them lives in villages with basic infrastructures and social services.

12. in 17th century, European missionaries induced Natives to replace their beliefs with Cristianity.

13. Most of Natives are working in primary sector ( forestry, hunting, etc.) . Therefore, salaries generally are very low.

A: Living on a reserve gives some privileges and as soon as you leave the reserve you lose them . It is also very hard for Natives adapt to living in our society.

admimistative body of the Band.

A:Salaries are low mostly because majority of Native poeple works in Primary sector.

A: Many of them have no jobs,no money and a lot od other problems. This pushed them to start drinking or taking drugs. And this , unfortunately leads to very high death rates.

A: There are roughly 1 200 000 Native people living in Canada.
