Coasts open system.

• The coast is an open system because it has inputs from outside (eg. sediment from rivers) and outputs into other systems (eg. sediment transferred into deep seas). Many processes operate at the coast - for example, sub-aerial weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition. Some of the inputs, processes and outputs are shown on the diagram below.
