Question 1

Page 5: Geography Challenge Team 50

Our team (team 50) had the choice of going to Cabramatta,

Bankstown or Burwood.

•We chose Bankstown because of its multicultural society. •Did you know that Bankstown has over 180,000 residents, that of which come from around 160 nationalities? •This allowed us to find someone from basically anywhere in the world!!

We chose……

• As part of the task completion we had to travel together by public transport to Bankstown, we chose by train

• For the meal that we had to have together we chose the ‘Vietnamese Eatery’

• According to the owner it was a unique non chain run restaurant that offered the best of his family recipes

• We had to interview a person from another country that had moved here in the last twenty years

• This is a clip of Emma Scott interviewing an Iranian man staying in Bankstown

• He has been in Bankstown for 8 months• He came here for a life without the troubles that go

on day to day in Iran

Nespresso Coffee Capsules

Question 3

Page 12: Geography Challenge Team 50

• Farming of the coffee beans occurs in all countries of South America, where 7000 small-scale farms work with Nespresso.

• From there they are cleaned, packed and shipped to Switzerland. It is here that they are formed into ‘pods’ of coffee, packaged and shipped to over 117 countries, including Australia.

• Once in Australia, they are distributed amongst the numerous Nespresso stores.

• Nespresso coffee pods, although in development since the 1980s, only begun the widespread distribution in the 2000s, and has since became a global brand.

• Their success is international, and they are easily recognized as leading in the coffee industry. George Clooney remains the face of their campaign, and has since 2006, heightening their recognition around the world.

From any of the countries in South America, to Switzerland, to Australia

Page 14: Geography Challenge Team 50

• In 2004, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program aimed to improve the quality and sustainability of the farmers and their communities that produce Nespresso Coffee

• In 2013, Nespresso entered into a partnership with Fairtrade, ensuring they were certified but also working together to introduce social welfare programs into these communities, including health and accident coverage and retirement programs

• This means that an acceptable share of the profits is returned to the 7000 farms in South America. This commodity chain aims to strengthen the communities in which the coffee comes from, thus resulting in a circle of production. The commodity chain is strengthened as profits circle back to where the coffee is originally produced.

Question 4 Water Footprint • Two people in our team

had to calculate their own water footprint

• We then had to think about strategies of how to try and reduce our water footprint for a week

• Last we had to write a short reflection together, comparing our experiences

Adam’s implemented strategies

• Timer for 5 minute shower• Reduce meat consumption and increase vegetable

consumption• Reduce high water content fruits for lower content fruit• Drink less milk• Become more organised with washing dishes and

clothes, have one set day• Half watering time based on plants need of water, as

not all plants need the same amount of water

Page 24: Geography Challenge Team 50

Matthew and Adam’s reflection

Both Matthew and I saw our water consumption as far too much for average people to use, considering we lived in a country harshly affected by drought.

So we both shared our strategies on how to reduce water. We both noticed that our food consumption was the main reason of a higher water use. In order to reduce this use we decided to reduce meat consumption, increase vegetable consumption. I thought to reduce consuming fruit with higher water content as they use up more water. We both realised the need to reduce milk, where Matthew reduced his amount of milk in coffee and I just reduced my cups of milk in general. We assumed that meat consumption would decrease slightly and vegetables would replace the difference.

Page 25: Geography Challenge Team 50

Matthew and Adam’s reflectionHowever Matthew had a good idea for car washing, by limiting the amount of time he goes there, and by going to a car wash that uses recycled water, therefore he would not have to count it.I realised that I had to have shorter showers and reduce the amount of time watering the garden, and I told Matthew a good way to do it is to have a stopwatch or timer on your phone and time your usage of water and stop a the limit. We also decided that in order to reduce water usage in washing up, we should have designated days to do the big washes instead of running the tap or putting a load on for every item.

Question 5

Page 27: Geography Challenge Team 50

5. A) • I listened to Erston, an instrumental hip hop/roots artist from

Melbourne. B) • Modern day Hip hop developed in the U.S during the 1970s. • Within the hip hop branch of music there are many subgenres

such as freestyle rap, G-Funk and instrumental hip hop. The roots of the hip hop genre lie mainly in funk and soul. Jamaican Dub music also had a particular influence on hip hops foundations. In its early stages, hip hop acted as a ‘voice’ for the disadvantaged youth of low income area of the States

Page 28: Geography Challenge Team 50

• Technological innovations such as turntables, samplers and drum machines helped diversify the hip hop genre leading to different styles of rap and the formation of MCing. It developed further on a global scale during the late 20th century leading to different culture influences and a multiplicity of subgenres, each with its own distinctive sound.

• Now, hip hop is a well established mainstream genre, influencing pop music through the likes of Jay Z, Lil Jon and Akon.

B continued…….

Page 29: Geography Challenge Team 50

C) • Erston currently resides in Melbourne, quoting such

musical influences as J dilla, Nujabes and DJ Krush. • The instrumental style (no lyrics) and quasi-trance

like progressive beat of Glimmer and Grind suggest that Japan’s DJ Krush had a large impact on Erston’s sounds. The dominant role of piano in Filmrator reinforces this. Characteristics of J dilla’s work can also be seen in the bassline and the scratchy, old school sound of Gust.

Page 30: Geography Challenge Team 50

• These three songs all hold strong jazz and orchestral influences, making use of a wide range of instruments. This is characteristic of DJ Krush and Nujabes, both Japanese artists who are renowned for their atmospheric and somewhat nostalgic sounds.

• DJ Krush’s Kemuri sounds very similar to Erston’s Gust. What results is an energising sound and something that I have never heard before.

Page 31: Geography Challenge Team 50

D) • Erston’s music is consistent with a trend to reject the mass

produced American sounds made popular through globalisation, instead taking an alternative and refreshing approach to music.

• In 2013, there was a global musical fascination with Asian music, most notable through Psy’s megahit Gangnam Style and the K-Pop and J-Pop shows seen on commercial television. Part of this allure and unique appeal of a foreign language and culture can been seen through Erston’s embracing of Japanese sounds.

Page 32: Geography Challenge Team 50

• There is also another trend in popular global music to return to traditional instruments such as the sounds of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. Again, this trend is reflected in Erston’s utilisation of orchestral instruments like the saxophone, piano and cornet.
