Blue Planet’s Mission is to:

• Advance and exploit synergies among the many observational programmes devoted to ocean, coastal and inland waters;

• To improve engagement with a variety of users for enhancing the timeliness, quality and range of services delivered; and,

• To raise awareness of the societal benefits of ocean observations at the public and policy levels.

...will add value to existing observational programmes by:

• Facilitating and encouraging collaboration among them for mutual benefit, and with the broader Earth observation community;

• Improving their connections with the users of ocean observation-derived products, information and knowledge;

• Enhancing their impact within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and other intergovernmental arenas; and,

• Promoting their communication with decision makers and with the general public regarding the societal benefits of ocean observations.

Blue Planet User Engagement: Linking Data and Information Providers with Users:

In its new phase, the Blue Planet Initiative will have a stronger focus on user engagement and will facilitate the two-way communication between data and information providers and various user communities, by:

1) Identifying the users for different types and sources of data and information,

2) Actively seeking their feedback on what they need and how and in what format it should be delivered to them, and

3) Sharing information, advice and best practices on user engagement within the Blue Planet community.

This coordination and advisory role will be taken on by a dedicated User Engagement group/component within the new structure.

• CEOS members (CSIRO, NOAA et al.) played an active role in hosting, organizing and contributing to the 2nd Blue Planet Symposium held in Cairns, Australia in May 2015

• We are also now working to organize the 3rd Blue Planet Symposium to be held September 2016 in Monterey, CA in association with the Oceans’ 16 Conference, organized by IEEE OES and MTS. Themes to be addressed include:

> Sustainable Use of Ocean Resources> Risks from Pollution, Warming and Acidification> Climate and the Changing Oceans> Processes and Life at the Interfaces with the Oceans

Note: we are requesting a CEOS Rep for the 3rd Symposium Steering Committee

• NOAA/NESDIS and CSIRO have also partnered to Co-Host the GEO Blue Planet Secretariat, which will be located in College Park, Maryland USA and Dutton Park, Queensland, Australia. This can be considered as a significant contribution by CEOS agencies to advancement of Blue Planet.

Compilation of ocean variables into coordinated dataset packages - the CEOS Ocean Variables Enabling Research and Applications for GEO (COVERAGE)• Status : Open• Creation Year : 2014• Completion Date : 2016-Q4• Coordination of essential ocean variables into single package deliveries,

with fit-for-purpose latency for research and applications. The four ocean VCs (in coordination with the Blue Planet committee) will play a role in the sustainment/continuation/harmonization of essential ocean variables. What does CEOS need to do differently in the future to support this project? How can CEOS support "integration" of activities across VCs and individual missions? What are the achievable spatial-temporal scales and appropriate latencies for multi-variable packages?
