At Genting Berhad, we aim to continue developing our businesses in a sustainable and responsiblemanner. Ourresponsiblebusinesspracticesare inculcatedsince theearlyyearsofouroperationsby instilling theGentingCoreValuesinourpeopleandbusinesspractices.OursocialresponsibilityandcommunityserviceswerefirstpublishedintheAnnualReport in1982,whichexpandedtoCorporateSocialResponsibilityreportingin2007andthereaftertheinauguralSustainabilityReportin2010.
The2018SustainabilityReport(“Report”)isthethirdannualsustainabilityreportforGentingBerhad,coveringitsmaterialeconomic,environmentalandsocial(“EES”)topics.ItispreparedinaccordancetoGRIStandards2016:CoreoptionandtheSustainabilityReportingGuide(2ndEdition)2018issuedbyBursaMalaysiaSecuritiesBerhad.
ThisReportsupplementsthesustainabilitydisclosuresinthe2018AnnualReportofGentingBerhadandprovidesacomprehensiveoverviewoftheGroup’sEESperformanceindicators.

Part1coversthesustainabilityapproachtakentoassessthe5SustainabilityPillarsandthemanagementapproachonthesustainabilityperformanceindicatorsforGentingBerhadanditswhollyownedunlistedsubsidiary,GentingEnergyLimited(“GentingEnergy”)andwhereapplicable,theGentingGroup.
Part 2 covers the summary of sustainability reports ofGenting Berhad’s listed companies, namely GentingSingaporeLimited(“GentingSingapore”),GentingMalaysiaBerhad (“Genting Malaysia”) and Genting PlantationsBerhad(“GentingPlantations”).Eachlistedcompanyhasproduced a detailed sustainability report that providedmore information on their sustainability performancesin2018.Thesereportscanbefoundontheirrespectivecorporatewebsites. This ReporthighlightsthesustainabilitytopicsthatareconsideredmostmaterialtoourCompanyandGroupbyourstakeholders.ItisnotintendedtoserveasacomprehensivedocumentthatcoversallaspectsofbusinessoperationsofGentingBerhadanditskeycompanies.Oursustainabilityreportingwillmeettheprogressivechangesinguidelinesandstandardsoflocalandinternationalsustainabilitydisclosures.
TheGentingFounder’sDaywasinauguratedon28February2018tocommemoratetheremarkablelegacyofthelateTanSriDato’Seri(Dr)LimGohTong.ThisspecialdaywillbecelebratedeveryyearbytheGentingGrouptohumblyremindourselves that theGentingCoreValues,espousedbyourbelovedFounder,namely–HardWork,Honesty,Harmony,LoyaltyandCompassionarewiseandenduring, reliableandproven.GuidedbyourChairmanandChiefExecutiveTanSriLimKokThay,wewillensurethattheGentingCoreValuesremaintheunderlyingethosinhowweconductourbusinesses.
GentingBerhadhasoverthepastdecadebeeninvolvedinresearchanddevelopmentfornewtreatmentsandnewwaysforearlydetectionofAlzheimer’sDisease,throughvariousinvestmentsinlifesciencescompanies.Wehopetoplayourparttofindsolutionsthatcanpositivelyandmeaningfullyimpacthumanlives.OurinvestmentsincompaniessuchasTauRxPharmaceuticalsLtd,GentingTauRxDiagnosticCentreSdnBhdandCorTechsLabs,Inc.supportresearchandclinicaltrials intheon-goingfightagainstAlzheimer’sDiseaseandwilladdressthediseasefromtheperspectiveoftreatmentandearlydiagnosis.
Wehopeour investments in thesecompanieswill benefitMalaysia, throughknowledge transfer via collaborationsbetweentheseworldclasscompaniesandresearcherswithourlocaluniversitiesandlocalresearchers,aswellasbybringingcuttingedgetechnologytoMalaysiatocombatageinganddiseases;andbycreatingmoreemploymentinMalaysia.However,untilacureisfound,peoplewithdementia,theirfamilymembersandcaregiversneedhelpandsupport.
Assuch, theplan toestablishaDementiaCareCentrewasannouncedat the inauguralGentingFounder’sDayon28February2018thatwouldinvolvetheparticipationofscientists,medicalresearchersandexpertsinthisfieldfromUniversityofMalaya.
I am pleased to report that in conjunction with Genting Founder’s Day 2019, the new Dementia Care Centre iscompletedandreadytobehandedovertothecentre’smanagementteam,ledbytheGeriatricdivisionofUniversityofMalayaon28February2019.
Thecentreispurposebuiltandwillofferdaycareservicestopeoplesufferingfromdementia,aswellasprovidetrainingtocaregivers,familymembersandprofessionalsinvolvedindementiacare.Itwillalsoserveasaplaceforcaregiverstonetworkandsharebestpracticesinthecareofpeoplelivingwithdementia.ThecentrewillbeoperatedonacharitablebasisaspartoftheGentingGroup’scorporatesocialresponsibility.

Thecentreisdesignedtoaccommodateupto50patientsatanyonetime.Facilitiesatthecentreincludeaquietroom,arestingroom,aprayerroom,aphysiotherapyandcognitivestimulationroom,consultationrooms,meetingroomsandoffices.Thecoststobuildandequipthecentreaswellastheon-goingoperationalcostswillbebornedbytheGentingGroup.Thecentrewillstartoperationsinthenearfuture.WearehonouredthatPuanSriCeciliaLimwillserveaspatronoftheDementiaCareCentre.
AninauguralEminentSpeakersConferenceSeries,co-organisedbyGentingBerhadandUniversityofMalayawillbeheldon28February2019,inconjunctionwithGentingFounder’sDay2019.Threeofthefoureminentspeakersattheconferenceare inviteesoftheGentingGroupandtheyarefoundersof lifesciencescompanieswhichtheGentingGrouphasinvestedin,overthepastdecade.
Wewillcontinuetoworkcloselywithourpartners,associatesandotherstakeholderstoachievethebestforGentingandcontributetowardsthebettermentofourcommunity.

In2018,the660MW2 Bantenpowerplantproducedover4,492millionkWh3ofelectricityinIndonesia,comparedto3,397millionkWhproducedin2017.Equippedwithitssupercriticaltechnology,theplanthasachievednearto90%availabilitysincethecommencementofitscommercialoperationsinMarch2017.
GentingEnergy’swhollyowned91.8MWwindfarminJangivillage,Gujarat, India(“Jangiwindfarm”)produced222millionkWhin2018.Thisamountwasequivalenttotheelectricityconsumptionofmorethan193,0004residentsinIndiaforayear.
Genting Berhad’s information technology (“IT”) resources provide daily support services to ensure the businesssystems run smoothly and are risk-protected. Theyensure theconnectivity betweenGentingemployeeswithourstakeholdersthroughemails,mobileandweb-basedcommunicationsaremaintainedatalltimes.Annualsurveyswereconductedtogatherfeedbackfromemployeeusers,coveringofficeautomationtools,theeffectivenessofITsystemsorapplicationsefficiencyandeffectiveness,ITpersonnel’scompetencyinprovidingITservicesandeffectivenessofemployeeawarenessonthetopicofcybersecurity.TheconstructivefeedbacksandsuggestionshaveenabledourITresourcestoimproveandfinetunebusinessprocessesandupgradespecificITfacilitiestoprovidequalityandtimelyservices.nomajordowntimeorserviceinterruptionwasreportedin2018.

AsGentingBerhadisaninvestmentholdingcompany,thesustainabilityofitskeycompanies’businessesisofutmostimportanceforgrowthandcontinuity.Ourlistedcompaniesintheleisureandhospitalitybusinesses,namelyGentingMalaysiaandGentingSingaporearethemajorcontributorstotheGroup’sfinancialperformance.
In2018,GentingMalaysiacontributed48%ofgrouprevenueand33%ofgroupassets,GentingSingaporecontributed37%ofgrouprevenueand31%ofgroupassetsandGentingPlantationscontributed9%togrouprevenueand8%groupassets.GentingEnergywhichcontributed7%ofgrouprevenueand12%ofgroupassets,isourunlistedsubsidiary.
Whileeachofourlistedcompaniesoperatesindependently,weregularlyengagewiththemtounderstandhowtheirlatestcorporatestrategiesandbusinessoperationsreinforcetheoverallstrategiesoftheGrouptoachieveoperationalexcellenceandsustainablebusinesspractices.

Thisinternational accreditation underscores our commitment towards improving environmental aspects and impacts fromouroperations.Webelieveourgreeneffortshavecontributedpositively totheenvironmentasBantenpowerplantwasalsogradedasaGoodEnvironmentallyFriendlyCompanyin2018bytheSerangRegencyMunicipal.ThiswasthesecondconsecutiveyearthatBantenpowerplantwasrecognisedforitsbestenvironmentalpractices.Asweventureforward,weremaincommittedinmaintaininggoodenvironmentalmeasures.

Themanagementofeffluentsandwasteplaysavitalpartinaneffectiveenvironmentalstewardship.Thewastewatereffluentsare largelyattributedto theBantenpowerplantwhichdrawsseawater for itsoperations.All theeffluentsare treatedtomeethighestapplicableregulatoryrequirementsintherespectivecountriesofoperationpriortodischarge.GentingEnergygenerated868.6millionm3ofwastewatereffluentsin2018.
In2018,GentingEnergygenerated85,932tonnesofwasteascomparedto46,811tonnesofwastein2017.Thiswasmainlyattributable to the increase in industrialwastegeneratedbyBantenpowerplant in linewith the increase in totalpowergenerationin2018.Also,Bantenpowerplantrecordedafullyeargenerationofindustrialwastein2018ascomparedtoa9-monthgenerationin2017.
Properwastemanagementpolicyisinplaceforthetreatment,storageanddisposalofhazardousandnon-hazardouswaste.Thehazardouswasteareproperlystoredandhandledbyauthorisedvendorsforproperdisposalorsubsequentusage.non-hazardouswastearereusedorrecycledwherepossible.
