Genre theory – David Gauntlet

Media studies 2.0David Gauntlet has become known for his published works on Media and in particular – genre.This work has been noticeably different to most basic genre theories – as it argues that genre the world has now changed and that the receivers of the media are now the producers (this is evident in things such as online media like Twitter where audiences have the technology and power to break news quicker than journalists)

A key concept of his work is :“Conventional research methods are replaced – or at least supplemented – by new methods which recognise and make use of people's own creativity, and brush aside the outmoded notions of 'receiver' audiences and elite 'producers‘”Some examples of unconventional films are: Shaun of the dead – which you would at first expect to be a horror but is actually a comedy and plays of mocking zombie horror films

Another example is The Grand Budapest Hotel

• This suggests that these ‘new producers’ are making ‘new media’s’ in which have never before been created by the mass, “professional” media producers. This is leading to a more, underground film scene – such as films that challenge peoples perceptions more because they have no ties into what they can/can’t include in their product to some extent.

This leads to the idea of GENRE. - These key facts mean that typical genre’s such as horror, romance and comedy – are beginning to become less standardised. This means that what we expect to see in certain genre’s is changing.
