History of the genre crime drama

Crime drama had originally come around to early 1940’s to late 1950’s when film noir was really popular.

The evolution of the print mass media in the United Kingdom and the United States in the latter half of the 19th century was crucial in popularising crime fiction and related genres e.g. mystery. Function of popular fiction in society, providing a mass-produced medium.

Popularity of the genre:Crime drama also drama and mystery were really popular in mid 1900’s crime drama films like china town had a lot of views.

Narratives that link to crime drama

Criminal minds: In most crime dramas we have one lead character which is the

detective or we have a lead group e.g. Criminal minds the narrative would usually start with the ending and through out the show we see the mystery unveils with the group or individual detective. The binary opposition is usually based around good vs. Evil or law vs. Crime. In the end they usually always find the criminal and for special episodes e.g. They would make a twist and take longer to find the criminal which will then carry onto the next series.

Character types linked to the genre

The main character which is the detective would have the representations of being lonely and no one in their life and this one case that they are solving would change everything.

The genre is come so this detective would be very intelligent and smart and would be able to solve this case however they could be challenged and faced with tasks where they then reveal their flaws.

The supporting characters:

The supporting characters could be a group or just a side kick to the detective each supporting character would have a their own unique characteristics. E.g. The smart intellectual one.

Camera shots and sound in crime drama genre

This low angle shot of the detective shows authority and power. Also he is male which shows he is more dominant a stereotypical role of a detective we often see the male play the lead role.

Sound:In crime drama during film noir it was more mystery so there was more emphasis on sound in the scene where they catch the criminal, however the in new crime drama we have more action when catching the criminal and it is fast paced sound.
