Research into pop: •Pop music is generally thought to be the most popular mainstream music of the time which has general appeal to teenagers and young people. Yet pop changes with time and therefore cannot be specifically defined for all periods of time. •According to Wikipedia the definitions for pop music are ‘David Hatch and Stephen Millward define pop music as "a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk music". Although pop music is often seen as oriented towards the singles charts it is not the sum of all chart music, which has always contained songs from a variety of sources, including classical, jazz, rock, and novelty songs, while pop music as a genre is usually seen as existing and developing separately. Thus "pop music" may be used to describe a distinct genre, aimed at a youth market, often characterized as a softer alternative to rock and roll.’ •Grove music online once stated that pop music originated in the mid 1950’s in Britain as a description for Rock and roll and the new music styles and genres that appealed to young people and teenagers that it inspired and influenced. •ABBA was one of the most influential and famous bands of the pop genre. •In modern society and media, typical artists of the pop genre include Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, One direction, the wanted, Alexis Jordon, and Jessie J and so on. Research into indie: •Indie rock originated from the United Kingdom and the United States followed by Mexico and Canada, in the 1980’s. •It is a genre of alternative rock and the term ‘indie’ was originally used as a description of the record labels and eventually became associated with the music they produced. •It was often associated and used to refer to the bands/ artists that were seen as outsiders and that often didn’t fit in with the other typical genres, hence the word ‘indie’ stands for ‘independent’. •Due to this, the genre is often split up into lots of small sub-genres such as post-rock, indie pop, dream pop, noise rock, space rock, sadcore and emo. Typical bands that are associated with the indie genre include Noah and the Whale, Razorlight, Editors, Elbow, arcade fire, arctic monkeys, the enemy, the script, stereophonics etc.

Research into pop:•Pop music is generally thought to be the most popular mainstream music of the time which has general appeal to teenagers and young people. Yet pop changes with time and therefore cannot be specifically defined for all periods of time.

•According to Wikipedia the definitions for pop music are ‘David Hatch and Stephen Millward define pop music as "a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk music". As seen by the previous images, we can see that the imagery associated with many indie pop artists. Colour is a major aspect in the imagery, whether it is the lack of colour and the use of black and white or the excessive, prominent bright colour or the contrast created by using both of these.

There are alienated effects or vintage styles that are used and associated with indie pop. From the above images we can see this through the enhanced colour effects, unusual objects or accessories and the different styles of vintage and old fashioned costumes. Here are some examples of magazines featuring indie pop artists (also featuring some of the previous imagery):

Unlike many magazines, indie pop magazines have a wider range of shot types. This is because the genre of indie pop has a wide range of music styles and types and therefore the shots types reflect the differences in their styles. Plus as the imagery for indie pop is often unique and unusual, big/ very big close ups are sometimes used for some artists such as the one shown above of Florence and the Machine. Yet as the indie pop genre is made up many bands, long shots or medium long shots are also used to show all the members of the band as well as their proxemics etc.

Unlike most magazines that are specified to a certain genre, magazine that feature indie pop artists are often just indie magazines that occasionally feature pop artists that cross the genre or pop magazine that occasionally feature indie artists who cross the genre. This is usually because of the type of charts the band/ artists are featured in and the level of status and recognition that they have. Therefore an indie pop magazine may feature all of the artists shown above as well as those from the link and so on. Yet it would also be able to cross both genres of indie and pop and occasionally feature artists such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Nirvana, Gun n’ Roses and so on. This will allow more opportunities for style and content as well as attracting a wider audience. Here are some examples of magazines featuring artists that cross the pop or indie genres.

As pop is a genre most associated with young people and teenage girls, the content of pop magazine is often more gossip based and featured more about the lifestyles of the celebrities of the genre. Yet indie is more associated with men and people of a slightly older generation, such as mid to late twenties and above. Thus the content of indie magazines is often more based around the music being produced by the artists associated with the genre and the music industry in terms of live events and the process’ behind albums and singles etc. Yet as an indie pop magazine is a mix of both pop and indie the content is more unusual. As the pop artists that would be featured in an indie pop magazine are the most famous and successful, the fans of the artists and would be of a wider audience and several group within society such as different age groups and genders. Therefore in an indie pop magazine I would expect to find content, still aimed at a slightly older audience, but based around both the music and other aspects about the artists. For example, there may be information and reviews on the music industry and live events, then information about the fashion styles of artists, as the indie pop industry has a fairly unusual and vintage style of fashion which may be advertised and explained in the magazine.
