Genre

There are many different types of genre (pronounced jon-ruh) in literature. "Genre" means "category" or "kind".

But what do different genres have in common?

They tell stories!

ADVENTURENarratives in which the protagonist or other major characters are consistently placed in dangerous situations.

FANTASYWorks that use magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, themes and/or setting.

Historical FictionPresents readers with a story that takes place during a notable period in history, and usually during a significant event in that period.

HORRORStories intended to scare, unsettle, or horrify the reader.

MysteryStory in which a detective, either an amateur or a professional, solves a crime or a series of crimes. The detective may be a private investigation, a policeman, an elderly widow, or a young girl, but he or she generally has nothing material t gain from solving the crime.

Realistic FictionStories about situations occurring in the real world. There can be no magic or fantasy involved in the plot.

Traditional LiteratureStories that are passed down from one group to another in history. This includes folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from different cultures.

Science FictionThe story has a theme related to science, technology, space and the future.
