TDT | Manama

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yes-terday called on world

nations to provide a safe, pros-perous and sustainable life for humankind by establishing close cooperation.

The crises have proved that close international cooperation is the way forward,” His Majesty reminded the world leaders by saying, “It should have its basis on firm pillars of communica-tion, solidary and peace.”

“A collective response and ef-fective partnership with mod-ern visions and advanced ideas that suit the present and looking

forward to the future is the way for countries to achieve their common goals,” stressed HM the King during the opening of the Paris Peace Forum in a recorded speech.

The Peace Forum was in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and heads of state of several countries.

HM King described the fourth edition of the annual Paris Peace

Forum as an important platform for exchanging views and ideas for strengthening world peace.

“The forum presents a val-uable opportunity to search for solutions to overcome the

challenges facing countries to-day, foremost of which is the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis.”

The forum, HM the King said, also enhances international co-operation, especially in science and governance. Founded in 2018, the non-profit organiza-tion aims to boost cordial diplo-macy and prevent hostility in the global arena.

HM King further stressed that the global events and crises have proved that close interna-tional cooperation is the way to achieve our common goals.

Rob Malley, the US Special Envoy for Iran, is visiting

Bahrain as part of a trip to the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Saudi Arabia ahead of talks about reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

The US State Department said yesterday that the trip began yesterday and continue until the 20th of this month.

The exact date of his Bah-rain visit is not revealed.

Reports said Malley would begin his trip in the United Arab Emirates before proceed-ing to Israel, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

The trip will also be Mal-ley’s first to Israel as a member of the Biden administration, though he has met multiple times with Israeli officials in Washington.

“He will coordinate our ap-proaches on a broad range of concerns with Iran, including

its destabilizing activities in the region and the upcoming seventh round of talks on a mutual return to full com-pliance with the (deal),” the statement said, referring to the Nov. 29 resumption of indirect US-Iran talks.

The upcoming talks in Vien-na seek to get Washington and Tehran to resume compliance with the nuclear deal, under which Iran restrained its nu-clear programme in return for relief from US, EU and UN sanctions.

Then-US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in 2018 and restored broad US sanctions.

Bahrain expresses solidarity with India, Sri Lanka

TDT | Manama

Bahrain extended condo-lences to the governments

and peoples of India and Sri Lanka over the victims of the torrential rains, which killed dozens of people and injured others.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the sympathy of Bahrain with the two friendly countries, af-firming its full solidarity and support for all efforts made to limit further losses in lives and property.

Heavy rains on Sri Lanka’s coast and in the south Indi-an state of Tamil Nadu have killed at least 41 people, de-stroyed thousands of homes and snarled traffic.

According to a report, 25 people have died in recent

days, most from drowning, while five were hurt in land-slides in Sri Lanka.

In the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, at least 16 people died after heavy rains caused severe flooding over the weekend, the state’s disaster management department said Thursday. Officials previously said five people had died in the floods.

More heavy rain is expected in Tamil Nadu and the south-ern coast of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state, as a de-pression over the Bay of Ben-gal moves toward the region, according to India’s Meteoro-logical Department.

Tamil Nadu state officials evacuated hundreds of people from low-lying areas and dis-tributed rations and food to those already affected by the rains. (See page 10-11)

Bahrain turned challenges into opportunities: Education MinisterTDT | Paris

Education Minister, Dr Majidbin Ali Al-Nuaimi, affirmed

Bahrain’s full support to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organ-isation yesterday to achieve its humanitarian goals and noble values.

The minister said this as he spoke at the 41st session of the General Conference of UNESCO at the UNESCO headquarters.

He affirmed Kingdom’s sup-port to strengthen the pillars of peace, promote sustainable development and overcome the effects of the outbreak, especial-ly on education. He indicated that the Kingdom had taken all measures to ensure that educa-

tion continues a priority. “Bahrain has turned the chal-

lenges created by the pandemic into real success opportunities,

be it through the King Hamad Schools of the Future Project, which provides great opportu-nities for electronic and digital

learning, the centralised les-son and the educational por-tal (eduNET),” the minister said.

The minister told the meet-ing that the number of visits to eduNET had crossed 68 million during the previous academic year, or other means, such as televised lessons and 14 You-Tube channels. He also high-lighted the role played by the Bahrain-based UNESCO’s Re-gional Centre for Information and Communication Technolo-gy (RCICT) in providing the nec-essary supportive programmes.

He stressed that efforts to provide quality education are continuing during the current academic year.

Military Hospital holds mock evacuation exerciseTDT | Manama

The Military Hospital con-ducted a mock evacuation

exercise yesterday to tackle a fire outbreak.

The drill scenario consisted of evacuating all the employ-ees in one of the hospital’s de-partments after a fire broke out,

causing injuries to four people. The exercise aimed to ascer-

tain safety measures at the Royal Medical Services. More than 14 employees attended the ex-ercise. Military Hospital is the only hospital in Bahrain, which obtained Canadian accredita-tion as the first accredited cen-tre for treating injuries.

Polytechnic holds exams

TDT | Manama

Students of Bahrain Poly-technic sat for their mid-

term exams for the first semes-ter of the academic year 2021 to 2022 at Isa Town Campus.

Polytechnic had stopped conducting exams since the

second semester of the aca-demic year 2019/2020 after shifting to online learning fol-lowing the COVID-19 outbreak.

Acting CEO of the Polytech-nic, Dr Reem Al-Buainain, thanked students for commit-ting to the instructions and di-rectives issued by the college.

UAE, Bahrain, Israel and US forces in joint naval drillReuters | Dubai

Forces from the United ArabEmirates, Bahrain, Isra-

el and the United States Na-val Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) began a multilat-eral maritime security opera-tions exercise in the Red Sea on Wednesday, NAVCENT said yesterday.

This is the first publicly ac-knowledged naval exercise be-tween the United States, Israel and the two Gulf countries.

An Israeli naval officer, brief-

ing reporters in Israel on the drill, said the start of such mili-tary cooperation under US aus-pices could help counter Iran’s “power projection” in the re-gion.

The UAE and Bahrain last year normalised diplomatic relations with Israel under a US-brokered deal known as the Abraham Ac-cords.

Negations between Iran and major powers on reviving a 2015 nuclear deal resume in Vienna on Nov. 29, with failure carry-ing the risk of a sharp spike in

regional tensions.

Five-day drillThe five-day exercise in-

cludes training on the USS Port-land vessel and will “enhance interoperability between partic-ipating forces’ maritime inter-diction teams”, a US statement said.

“Maritime collaboration helps safeguard freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade, which are essential to regional security and stability,” said Vice Admi-ral Brad Cooper, commander

of NAVCENT, US 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces.

In Israel, the Israeli naval officer, whose rank and name could not be published under the terms of the briefing, cited an attack in July, which world powers and Israel blamed on Iran, that killed two people aboard a commercial ship off Oman. The drill, the officer said “will increase the cooperation and the safety of the Red Sea, but not just the Red Sea, because we are dealing with Iranian ter-ror” in the region as a whole.

Riding on the back of strong performance across all its business lines, GFH

Financial Group yesterday re-ported a third-quarter and nine-month profit that surged from a year-ago ago, despite the on-going market pressures glob-ally as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

Among the main contribu-tors to the third quarter were investment banking and treasury income.

Fees generated on deals of US$22.65 million were realised

from key investments in the logistics sector and multi-resi-dential portfolios.

Also supporting income growth and profits were contri-butions from the treasury busi-ness and commercial banking business of the Group.

Quarterly results The third-quarter net profit

attributable to shareholders was US$23.30 million, up 187.30% from US$8.11 m in the same quar-ter a year ago.

Earnings per share were US cents 0.69 compared to US cents 0.24 for the comparative quarter of 2020.

Total income was US$89.60 m compared to US$67.58 m in the prior-year quarter, a rise of 32.58%.

Consolidated net profit was US$24.13 m compared with US$9.92 m in the year-earlier quarter, an increase of 143.25%.

Total expenses were up 13.56% to US$65.47 m from US$57.65 m in the prior-year quarter.

Nine-month profit Net profit attributable to

shareholders was US$60.34 mil-lion compared with US$23.17 m in the corresponding period of 2020, an increase of 160.42%.

Supporting the growth was increased deal placement, con-tinued expansion of the Group’s treasury activities and stronger performance by its commercial banking subsidiary, Khaleeji Commercial Bank (KHCB,) and real estate business.

Earnings per share were US

cents 1.78 compared to US cents 0.69 in the year-ago period.

Total income was US$270.61 m, versus US$214.10 m for the 2020 period, an increase of 26.39%. Income growth contin-ued to be supported by strength-ening performance and contri-butions from across the Group’s core investment platforms and activities.

Consolidated net profit in-creased 125.27% to US$68.28 m, compared with US$30.31 m in the prior-year period.

To t a l E x p e n s e s w e r e US$202.33 m, up 10.08% from US$183.79 m in the year-earlier period.

Total equity attributable to shareholders was US$0.97 bil-lion at 30 September 2021, up 6.59% from US$0.91 bn at year-

end 2020. Total assets of the Group continued to grow reach-ing US$7.43 bn at 30 September 2021 compared with US$6.59 bn at 31 December 2020, an in-crease of 12.75%.

Beating pandemicCommenting, Jassim Alsed-

diqi, Chairman of GFH, said, “The first nine months of 2021 have been marked by substantial growth in income and profits achieved by the Group. We’re pleased with these results and GFH’s continued ability to deliv-er across its diversified lines of business and geographies where we invest.”

“While globally, we are still feeling the effects of the pan-demic, our performance for the period underscores the robust nature of our strategy and the important positions we have built-in resilient and defensive sectors and businesses around the world. During the period, we continued to expand our pres-ence in the global logistics real estate sector, bringing new and exciting deals to our investors and generating strong placement income.”

“We also reported enhanced contributions from our restruc-tured commercial banking busi-ness alongside further growth in our treasury business and improvements in real estate activities and income. GFH has entered the fourth quarter with strong momentum and a pipe-

line of opportunities to enable us to achieve further growth and profitability for the remainder of the year and beyond,” said Alseddiqi.

Hisham Alrayes, CEO of GFH, added, “Solid increases in income and profits reflect a well-diversified business model, effective management of our investments and steady income generation capabilities, which has been a key objective for the Group. During the quarter, we benefited from strong investor demand for deals we have closed in the US real estate market in well-performing segments such as logistics and residential. We have also made gains from im-proving performance in our commercial banking activities, where we have increased our stake in KHCB.”

Growth central themeLooking ahead, he said growth

remains a central theme for GFH, in all areas of our business. “We have entered the final months of the year with a sharp focus on investments and relationships that will allow us to accelerate growth in our portfolios in key sectors including logistics, tech-nology and education, among others.”

He added: “We look forward to announcing further strategic transactions and new partner-ships with a view towards cre-ating even greater value for our investors and shareholders.”

This was due partially to the lower provisioning levels allocated dur-ing the period, owing to the gradually improving macro-economic conditions in most of the countries of the Group’s operations.

Net allowances for expected credit losses reduced 65% to US$ 32 m from US$ 91 m during the same period last year.

Total operating income decreased by 20% to reach US$ 230 m compared to US$ 287 m during the same period last year, due to the impact of the devaluation of local currencies against the US dollar in some countries of the Group’s operations in addition to the higher cost of funding, resulting from significant increases in base rates in some markets.

Nine-month results

Net Income attributable to equity holders of the parent company was US$ 89 million, up from US$ 67 m for the same period in 2020, a growth of 34%.

Earnings per share was US Cents 6.09 compared to US cents 4.15 for the same period of 2020.

Total net income was US$ 146 m, up from US$ 132 m in the same period of 2020, registering a growth of 11%.

The increase in net income was pre-dominantly a result of a strong expense discipline and lower provisions, sup-ported by improvements in economic conditions.

Total operating income of the group was US$ 724 m during the first nine months of 2021, compared to US$ 839 m in the same period of 2020, a 14% decrease. The decline in total operat-ing income resulted mainly from the

devaluation of local currencies against the US dollar in some countries of our operations in addition to the higher costs of funding.

Customer Accounts (which include Equity of Investment Account Holders, Customer Current and other Accounts and Due to Banks) increased by 2% from US$ 24.4 billion in December 2020 to US$ 24.9 bn at the end of September 2021.

Mazin Manna, member of the Board of Directors and Group Chief Executive Officer of the Group said, “Our operat-ing and financial results continued to show improvement at both the Group and the Unit levels. We have greatly en-hanced our operating efficiency through stringent discipline towards control of expenses. Our profitability has also im-proved due to better performance of some units and lower provisioning, ow-ing to the gradually improving, albeit unstable, outlook and environment”.

Egypt to host COP27 international climate conference in 2022 -ministryReuters | Cairo

Egypt will host the COP27United Nations Climate

Change Conference in 2022, the country’s environment ministry said yesterday.

The North African coun-try will hold the conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, it added.

The decision was taken during this year’s confer-ence, COP26, which is host-ed by the United Kingdom in Glasgow.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi declared in September his country’s in-terest in hosting the COP27 on behalf of the African continent.

The country would work to make the conference “a radical turning point in in-ternational climate efforts in coordination with all par-ties, for the benefit of Africa and the entire world,” he said at the time.

The United Arab Emir-ates (UAE) was selected on Thursday to host the COP28 international climate con-ference in 2023.

SpaceX crew launch marks 600 space travellers in 60 yearsAP | Cape Canaveral

A S p a c e X ro c ke t c a r r i e d four astronauts into orbit

Wednesday night, including the 600th person to reach space in 60 years.

The repeatedly delayed flight occurred just two days after SpaceX brought four other as-tronauts home from the Interna-tional Space Station. They should have been up there to welcome the newcomers, but NASA and SpaceX decided to switch the order based on Monday’s ideal recovery weather in the Gulf of Mexico and pulled it off.

“It was a great ride, better than we imagined,” mission command-er Raja Chari said shortly after the spacecraft reached orbit.

The launch was just as riveting for spectators at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, as well as along the East Coast, as the Falcon rocket thundered through clouds on its way to space, turning night into day.

Germany’s Matthias Maurer claimed the No. 600 position, according to NASA, based on his mission assignment. He and his three NASA crewmates should ar-

rive at the space station in under 24 hours, well over a week late.

One of the astronauts — NASA isn’t saying which one — was side-lined last week by an undisclosed medical issue. The crew member is fully recovered, according to NASA. Officials won’t say wheth-er it was an illness or injury, but noted it wasn’t COVID-19.

Bad weather also contributed to their flight delays. Chari said trying to launch on Halloween left them with “a trick instead

of a treat.” It was also drizzling Wednesday night when the four astronauts said goodbye to their families for six months — with everyone huddling under umbrel-las — but it cleared up by launch time.

“Enjoy your holidays among the stars. We’ll be waving as you fly by,” SpaceX launch director Mark Soltys radioed to the crew.

The list of 600 travelers rang-es from those who have bare-ly scratched space — like actor

William Shatner last month — to U.S. and Russian astronauts who have spent a year or more in orbit. This year’s surge in space tourists helped push the tally over the 600 mark.

That averages out to 10 people per year since Yuri Gagarin’s pi-oneering flight in 1961, Maurer noted.

“But I think in a very few years, we will see an exponential rise of that one because now we’re entering the era of commercial spaceflight,” he said after arriv-ing at Kennedy Space Center two weeks ago.

The crew launch marked SpaceX’s fourth for NASA and the company’s fifth passenger flight overall — including a Septem-ber charter flight for four that skipped the space station. The Dragon capsule’s toilet leaked during their three days in orbit, necessitating a quick redesign of the flushing system in the newest capsule, named Endurance by its crew.

A balky parachute during Monday’s descent had SpaceX engineers poring over the data, before giving the go-ahead for

Wednesday’s launch. One of the four chutes opened more than a minute late, a problem seen in testing and well within safety limits, but still being examined, officials said.

As of Wednesday, Elon Musk’s company has launched 18 people in 18 months.

Philippines president’s daughter joins new party as election deadline nearsReuters | Tokyo

The popular daughter of Philippine leader Rodrigo

Duterte yesterday joined a new political party and could run for a national position, its top official said, just days out from a deadline to firm up candidates for 2022 presidential elections.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, 43, has led opinion polls throughout this year as the most preferred candidate for the presidency, a post she has repeatedly said she had no interest in pursuing.

But this week she withdrew from next year’s contest for mayor of Davao city, setting off speculation about a bigger role.

Duterte-Carpio is a promis-ing leader and a tremendous asset, said congressman Martin Romualdez, president of Lakas-CMD, the party controlled by former president Gloria Maca-pagal-Arroyo that she joined.

“She joined Lakas-CMD for a possible national run,” Romual-dez told DZMM radio.

The party has nominated can-didates for president and vice president, but those are widely seen as placeholders who can switch at the last minute. The

deadline for changes is Nov. 15.A s p o k e s p e r s o n f o r

Duterte-Carpio did not imme-diately respond to a request for comment on her plans.

Her father’s PDP-Laban po-litical party said on Wednesday it was watching “with keen in-terest” Duterte-Carpio’s moves, adding that a decision to seek a national post “will most cer-tainly affect the political land-scape”.

Duterte once said the presi-dency was no job for a woman but later suggested his daughter

could team up with one of his loyalists for a run.

The 76-year old leader, who cannot seek re-election, was also an 11th-hour replacement in 2015 ahead of an election he won convincingly.

Political observers have an-ticipated his daughter might do the same.

Political analyst Temario Rivera said it was “very clear” Duterte-Carpio would seek a national post, but the possibility of her teaming up with another presidential aspirant, Ferdinand

Marcos Jr., remains. The son and namesake of the

late Philippines dictator, who has registered to run for presi-dent under a different party, has not yet named a vice president.

“If they run together, whether it is Marcos-Sara or Sara-Mar-cos, it will be a formidable team,” Rivera told Reuters.

China’s Xi warns of ‘Cold War-era’ tensions in Asia-PacificChinese President Xi Jinping’s comments come ahead of an upcoming virtual meeting with US counterpart Joe Biden

• Xi Jinping said the Asia Pacific region “should not relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era”

AFP | Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned against a return to Cold War-era divisions in

the Asia-Pacific yesterday as ten-sions mounted over the security of Taiwan.

In the run-up to an anticipated virtual summit with US President Joe Biden as early as next week, Xi said countries in the region must work together on common challenges, from the Covid-19 pandemic to trade.

“Attempts to draw ideological lines or form small circles on ge-opolitical grounds are bound to fail,” he told a virtual business conference on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Coop-eration summit hosted by New Zealand.

“The Asia-Pacific region cannot and should not relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era.”

Xi’s call came hours after China and the United States announced a surprise pact to accelerate cli-mate action at a summit in Glas-gow where countries are trying to agree on measures to curb the warming of the Earth.

The Chinese leader did not mention the US deal directly but said “all of us can embark on a path of green, low-carbon sustain-

able development”.“Together, we can usher in a

future of green development,” he said.

The Chinese and US leaders will hold virtual talks “soon”, ac-cording to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Some reports say the meeting will take place as soon as next week.

‘Critical historical juncture’ But while the Biden adminis-

tration has identified climate as a key area for potential cooper-ation with China, tensions have soared over their rival visions for the Asia-Pacific region, notably Taiwan, a self-ruling democracy claimed by China.

Beijing has ramped up military activities near Taiwan, with a re-cord number of planes crossing into the island’s air defence iden-tification zone in early October.

Secretary of State Blinken on Wednesday underscored US mili-tary support for Taiwan.

“We will make sure that Taiwan

has the means to defend itself be-cause the purpose here is never to get to that point where anyone is actually trying to disrupt the sta-tus quo by force,” he told an event hosted by The New York Times.

Biden’s national security advi-sor Jake Sullivan said the United States and China had the choice not to return to Cold War-era di-visions.

“China has a different value system. It has different interests. And that’s part of what the ongo-ing competition will be about,” Sullivan said in an online address to Australia’s Lowy Institute yes-terday.

“But there’s no reason that that competition has to turn into con-flict or confrontation. And that is what responsibly and collectively we need to manage as we work in the years to come.”

‘Translate consensus into actions’

Besides its position on Taiwan, China also claims almost all of the

resource-rich South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in shipping trade pass annually, rejecting competing claims from Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Against that backdrop, the Unit-ed States, Britain and Australia announced in September that they had formed a new alliance -- AUKUS -- under which Austral-ia will acquire nuclear-powered submarines using US technology.

Although delivery is years away and China was not specif-ically named, the announcement angered Beijing and separately sparked a furious row with France which saw its deal to sell Australia conventional submarines torn up.

Sullivan said the AUKUS alliance showed that the United States trusted Australia with its most sensitive technology.

“And we believe even more im-portantly, in our collective, com-bined capacity to produce greater stability, security and deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

Heavy rains in India, Sri Lanka kill 41, authorities say

Reuters | Chennai

Heavy rains across south-ern India and Sri Lanka

have killed at least 41 people, authorities said yesterday, with weather forecasters ex-pecting the downpours to ease in the next few days as stricken communities pumped out the deluge.

The Indian Meteorological Department forecast light to moderate rain in most affected areas, with occasional flooding of some roads and low-lying areas.

Counterparts in neighbour-ing Sri Lanka said rain there was expected to ease from yesterday as the low pressure that brought the bad weather moved away.

“The worst is over and oc-casional rains will happen,” said Pradeep John, an amateur forecaster who is widely fol-lowed in Tamil Nadu, India’s worst-affected state.

“Today rains will be on and off, with large breaks and nothing alarming.”

The rains have killed 25 people in the island nation of Sri Lanka, most of whom drowned, while landslides in-jured five, officials said.

Sixteen people were killed in Tamil Nadu, state disaster

management minister KKSSR Ramachandran told a news conference.

Many parts of the state cap-ital Chennai, which is India’s auto manufacturing centre, were water-logged and gov-ernment officials used pumps to drain some communities that had been stranded waist deep.

Thousands of people in low lying areas were moved to safety, officials said.

Many schools and colleg-es in Tamil Nadu remained closed while some train servic-es were still suspended.

India’s northeast mon-soon usually runs from Oc-tober to December, bringing heavy rain, particularly to the south.

Neighbours of Belarus say migrant crisis risks military clashReuters | Warsaw

Countries bordering Bela-rus yesterday warned the

migrant crisis on the European Union’s eastern borders could escalate into a military con-frontation while Ukraine said it would deploy thousands more troops to reinforce its frontier.

Lithuania, Estonia and Lat-via said Belarus posed serious threats to European security by deliberately escalating its “hybrid attack” using migrants to retaliate for EU sanctions.

“This increases the possibil-ity of provocations and seri-ous incidents that could also spill over into the military do-main,” a joint statement by the countries’ defence ministers said.

While not an EU member, Ukraine is wary of becoming another flashpoint in the es-calating migrant crisis. Kyiv announced drills and the de-ployment of 8,500 additional troops and police officers to the country’s long northern border with Belarus.

Migrants stranded inside Be-larus threw rocks and branch-es at Polish border guards and used logs to try to break down a razor wire fence overnight in new attempts to force their way into the EU, the authorities in Warsaw said.

The EU says Minsk is encour-aging thousands of migrants fleeing war-torn parts of the world to try to cross its borders and may impose new sanctions on Belarus and airlines ferrying the migrants as soon as Mon-day.

Belarusian President Alexan-der Lukashenko threatened to retaliate, including by shutting down the transit of Russian nat-ural gas via Belarus, although there was no immediate re-sponse from Russia, its close ally and financial backer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow will try to help Europe weather an energy crunch and is hoping that German authorities will soon certify the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that will carry more Russian gas to Germany.

Moscow reacted angrily in the past when Ukraine, anoth-er transit country, disrupted supplies of gas to the West and Lukashenko has proved a dif-

ficult partner, pushing back against its wishes at times while accepting loans and subsidised energy.

Russia dispatched two stra-tegic bombers to patrol Bela-rusian airspace on Wednesday in a show of support for its ally. Belarus said Russian planes car-ried out drills for a second day yesterday.

“Yes, these are bombers ca-pable of carrying nuclear weap-ons,” Lukashenko said. “But we have no other option. We must see what they are doing there beyond the borders.”

He also said there were at-tempts to transfer weapons to the migrants, in what he de-scribed as a provocation in comments carried by Belarus state media. He did not pro-vide any evidence and it was not clear who he was accusing of doing this.

The Kremlin said Russia had nothing to do with tensions on the border and suggested the presence of heavily armed people on both sides was a source of concern. It also re-jected as “crazy” a suggestion in a media report that Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot could be targeted with retaliatory sanctions.

the Asia-Pacific yesterday as ten-sions mounted over the security of Taiwan.

Abu Dhabi’s new secular family law steps up Gulf talent competition

• Abu Dhabi’s new law says female witnesses are equal to male

• Other UAE emirates could follow suit, enhancing appeal to expats

• UAE vies with Saudi Arabia for foreign talent

Reuters | Dubai

Legal reforms in Abu Dhabi designed to enhance the emirate’s appeal to for-

eigners will allow for non-Mus-lim judges, birth certificates for children of unmarried parents, equality of men and women as witnesses, and new alimony and inheritance laws.

The new secular law, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, in-tends to make the political cap-ital of the United Arab Emirates more attractive for outsiders to live and work.

It has been welcomed as a step forward for gender equality.

“It gives a lot of rights to women which did not exist be-fore,” said Hassan Elhais, a legal consultant from UAE-based Al Rowaad Advocates. “It is revo-lutionary,”

The UAE’s tourism and busi-ness hub Dubai - usually more avant garde than Abu Dhabi - could follow suit and craft its own family laws too. That would help the UAE keep a competi-

tive edge in luring investment as conservative Gulf neighbour Saudi Arabia opens itself up to bring in foreign money and tal-ent.

Foreigners, mostly from South Asia, Egypt and the Phil-ippines, account for about 88% of the UAE’s nearly 10 million population, fuelling all as-pects of the economy from ex-ecutive positions to low-paid construction and domestic workers.

The Family Law for Non-Mus-lim Expatriates in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, announced on Sun-

day and expected to come into force in December, allows for “personal status” procedures - such as divorce, inheritance and marriage - to take place for the first time in the country outside of religious codes.

It also allows non-Muslim judges to preside over family is-sues for the first time anywhere in the Gulf.

It introduces the concepts of civil marriage, no-fault divorce and joint child custody. And, also for the first time in the UAE, it allows babies born to unmarried foreign parents to obtain birth

certificates if the father recog-nises paternity.

EQUALITY FOR FEMALE WITNESSES

The new law could also give more credibility to Abu Dhabi court judgements when parties apply for them to be recognised in, for example, Europe, Elhais said.

Many aspects of sharia fam-ily law give more standing and rights to men, such as where two female witnesses are con-sidered the equal of one male witness in family court proce-

dures. Abu Dhabi’s new law says female witnesses are equal to male.

Rothna Begum, of Human Rights Watch, said the law is an important step towards pro-viding equality, but wider legal reform was required to include all citizens and residents in the UAE, which is made up of seven emirates.

“The UAE should instead pass an optional civil code as well as reform its Personal Sta-tus Law to ensure equality be-tween men and women in all matters relating to marriage,

divorce, inheritance and deci-sions concerning children,” said Begum.

In one potentially problem-atic area, expatriate couples in Abu Dhabi, which has a popu-lation of about 2.9 million, need to opt into the secular system. That opens the possibility for a husband, for example, to insist on entering the sharia system instead.

Abu Dhabi’s reform comes a year after the UAE at a federal level started to reform its legal system to make it more attrac-tive for investment. Changes in-cluded decriminalising premar-ital sexual relations and alcohol consumption, and cancelling provisions for leniency when dealing with so-called “honour killings”.

The Gulf state also introduced longer-term visas as a way to attract and retain talent and en-courage more businesses to set up shop.

Britain presses Iranian deputy foreign minister over detained dual nationalsReuters | London

Britain yesterday said that officials had pressed Ira-

nian deputy foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani to release de-tained dual nationals including British-Iranian aid worker Naz-anin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

British foreign office offi-cials also told Bagheri Kani at a meeting in London that Iran should conclude the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) nuclear deal under the terms on the table now, the for-eign ministry said.

“The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister was also pressed on the need for Iran to urgently release all British nationals un-fairly detained in Iran, includ-ing Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, Anoosheh Ashoori and Morad Tahbaz,” the Foreign, Common-wealth and Development Office said in a statement.

Iran’s foreign ministry was not immediately available to comment.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was ar-rested at a Tehran airport in April 2016 and later convicted of plotting to overthrow the clerical establishment.

In April, an Iranian court sentenced Zaghari-Ratcliffe to a new term in jail on charges

of propaganda against Iran’s ruling system, just a month af-ter she finished a prior five-year sentence. That sentence has not yet started, though it has been upheld by an appeals court.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s family and the foundation have denied the charges. The foundation is a charity that operates inde-pendently of media company Thomson Reuters and its news subsidiary Reuters.

Her husband, Richard Rat-cliffe, is on a hunger strike to highlight her case. He met Brit-ish minister for the Middle East James Cleverly on Thursday.

“If I’m honest, quite a de-

pressing meeting,” Ratcliffe told reporters after he left the Foreign Office, adding that Cleverly told him the meeting with Bagheri Kani had been cordial.

“(Cleverly) couldn’t give a timeline on when things were going to move forward.”

The FCDO said Cleverly had reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reuniting Zaghari-Ratcliffe with her fam-ily in the UK.

“The Foreign Secretary (Liz Truss), Minister Cleverly and the FCDO continue to work hard to secure the release of all those British nationals unfairly de-tained in Iran,” it said.

Sudan’s army chief appoints new ruling council, led by himself

Reuters | Cairo

Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fat-tah al-Burhan was sworn in

yesterday as head of a new tran-sitional council he appointed to lead the country following the military takeover late last month, shrugging off domestic and international pressure to reverse the coup.

The new 14-member Sover-eign Council, for which one member is yet to be confirmed, includes civilians represent-ing Sudan’s regions but none from the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) political coalition that had been sharing power with the military in a democrat-ic transition since 2019.

Burhan’s deputy will remain

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with both men keeping roles they held before the coup. The move is likely to harden opposition among ci-vilian groups who have pledged to resist the takeover through a campaign of civil disobedi-ence, strikes and mass rallies, the next of which is planned for Saturday.

Late on Thursday, protesters closed roads and burned tires in Burri, a neighbourhood in the east of the capital Khartoum, witnesses said. Unverified pic-tures posted on social media ap-peared to show similar protests in other parts of the capital.

Sudan’s ousted Information

Minister Hamza Balloul said the announcement was an ex-tension of the coup and that he was confident the Sudanese people could defeat it.

The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), a leading protest movement, said: “Bur-han and his council’s decisions apply only to themselves, they have no legitimacy and will be met only with contempt and resistance.” The new council also includes representatives of rebel groups that reached a peace deal with the govern-ment last year but had reject-ed the takeover in a statement this week. Some senior civilians have been detained and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been under house arrest.

Bahrain a model for one-team spirit: Finance Minister• Shaikh Salman opens Middle East Guidance Forum

TDT | Manama

The Minister of Finance and National Economy, Shaikh Salman bin Khal-

ifa Al Khalifa, has stressed that Bahrain sets a model for one-team spirit work that leads to achievement and excellence, thanks to the His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Sal-man bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Min-ister.

In his inaugural speech at the 2nd edition of the Middle East Guidance Forum, held under the theme “Giving Priority to Guid-ance in a New World”, the min-ister affirmed Bahrain’s keen-ness to increase investment in the field supporting the human capital.

The forum combines in-per-son and virtual attendance to

discuss changes in the labour market resulting from the coro-navirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The minister stressed that continuous guidance and train-ing is the guarantor for the tran-sition of knowledge between generations.

He pointed out the directives

of HRH Crown Prince and Prime Minister in February 2020 to form the National Medical Task-force for Combating the Coro-navirus (COVID-19) and set up a joint operation room working round the clock even before Bah-rain recorded a case of infection. “This was part of the proactive

approach and the wise vision of HRH to manage the coronavirus crisis,” he said.

Shaikh Salman affirmed that the world had drawn lessons from the pandemic, including mainly how societies should put the public interest above the private one. He noted that

countries that prioritized the public interest showed better performance in overcoming the challenge imposed by the pan-demic.

The minister asserted that countries that have proven their name in development and pro-gress had accorded human and

financial resources equal im-portance. He pointed out that all government priorities and programmes in Bahrain follow this principle, including the re-cently-launched economic re-covery plan.

Europe’s Aleastur announces GCC’s first aluminium grain refiners plant in Bahrain• The new $15 million facility will supply speciality alloys to global markets

• Aleastur is one of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (Mumtalakat) portfolio companies

• The launch of this facility is an example of Bahrain’s economic recovery plan in action

TDT | Manama

Aleastur, a leading Euro-pean metal producer, announced launching

the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC’s) first state-of-the-art aluminium grain refiners and master alloys production hub at its new Middle East base in Bah-rain. The hub will be the Spanish firm’s first overseas facility and will produce high-quality alu-minium alloys for different pur-poses across various industries.

The new $15 million facility will supply speciality alloys to global markets, including Asia, North America and the GCC. The Bahrain facility will be exporting approximately 85% of its annual production to regional players in the industry, including alumin-ium smelters and cast-houses.

Aleastur is one of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (Mumtalakat) portfolio com-panies and is considered one of the top aluminium grain refin-er players. It is expected to hit revenues in the new facility of nearly $53 million by 2025 as it ramps up foreign exports.

The facility in Bahrain, de-

signed to be “an ideal” alumin-ium downstream hub, will re-duce lead times and strengthen supply chains for the alumini-um industry in the region and neighbouring markets as global economies begin to reboot and construction projects resume.

The launch of this facility is an example of Bahrain’s economic

recovery plan in action. This supports the mandate to contin-ue attracting investment to the Kingdom, ultimately creating jobs for Bahrainis.

“We hope to establish a solid regional base and establish an access point from Spain not only to cater the GCC but other sev-eral regions. The geographical

location of Bahrain and easy ac-cess to some of the fastest-grow-ing markets here will provide the platform we need to achieve our international growth ambi-tions,” said Sergio Martinez, the CEO of Aleastur Group.

“We’re thrilled to be joining our industry peers in Bahrain, and we look forward to tapping into a growing aluminium hub right next door to Alba. With our Spanish facilities, the new site will be particularly well-po-sitioned to export to the South East Asian and Indian markets. In addition to Bahrain’s well-placed geographical location, we will benefit from the highly skilled local workforce, strong logistics infrastructure and best-value operating costs,” said Sergio Martinez.

Aleastur’s new hub is part of a broader plan, in partnership with Mumtalakat, who acquired a significant stake in the compa-

ny in 2016, to develop the King-dom’s downstream aluminium sector and strengthen synergies between local manufacturers, and key international players.

Commenting on the an-nouncement, Khalid Al Rumai-hi, the CEO of Mumtalakat, said, “As one of our key investments, Aleastur’s presence in Bahrain will add significant value to the growing downstream alumin-ium cluster which will enable them to cater to the growing demand in the region and be-yond. We look forward to see-ing their operations expand and are excited by the prospects this next phase for Aleastur brings.

Bahrain is already known in the Gulf region for its boom-ing aluminium trade. The King-dom’s national aluminium man-ufacturer, Alba, is the largest single-site smelter in the world outside of China, producing at full capacity more than 2% of global output. Mid and down-stream clusters are fast develop-ing around Alba, feeding off the metal it produces. Aluminium exports made up about 34.2% of Bahrain’s non-oil exports in 2020, and the sector already contributes 11.1% to GDP.

Khalid Humaidan, the Chief Executive of Bahrain’s Econom-ic Development Board, said, “The decision by Aleastur to build its first international base in Bahrain, is a prime example of the Kingdom’s attractiveness in the manufacturing and logistics sectors which we believe can be summarized by three main attributes. Firstly, our competi-tive operating costs are likely to be more profitable, secondly, our free trade agreements support businesses. Last but not least, a key decisive element is a high-ly-skilled workforce we have to man those business and keep them successful.”

Other aluminium companies operating

in Bahrain include BAMCO, GARMCO, Bal-

exco, and Midal Cables. The firms distribute

Matthew McConaughey says he wants to ‘find out more information’ before mandating vaccines for his childrenFox | Los Angeles

Matthew McConaughey is speaking out on mandating vaccines

for his children. The issue has become a

hot-button topic since a vacci-nation against coronavirus was made widely available early this year for adults.

In recent weeks, develop-ers have been working toward making the vaccine available to children, prompting ques-tions about whether such a vac-cine should be mandated for kids.

Speaking at The New York Times’s DealBook summit, the 52-year-old actor expressed hes-itancy to require his children to get the vaccine.

“I couldn’t mandate having

to vaccinate the younger kids,” he said. “I still want to find out more information. … There will come a time where you’re going to have to roll the dice one way or the other and go: ‘Where are the numbers in my favor?’”

He also shared that as of “right now,” he’s not vaccinating his own children.

“Do I think that there’s any kind of scam or conspiracy the-ory?” he asked. “Hell no, I don’t.”

He suggested the public “get off” such a “narrative,” insisting that “there’s not a conspiracy theory on the vaccines.”

Health officials have begun to express confidence in the vaccine’s safety for children, and just last week, the CDC authorized Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine for emergency use in

children ages 5-11.Mc-Conaughey noted that “we just said we can vaccinate kids.”

McConaughey, who has floated the idea of running for the office of governor of Texas, said that he’s not against vaccines, just wants “more informa-tion” about them.

“I’m vaccinated. My wife’s vacci-nated,” he stated.

He said that his 90-year-old m o t h e r, w h o is staying with t h e m , i s i m -munocompro-mised, prompt-ing him to re-

ceive the vaccine. He in-sisted he “chose” to do it rather than because he was “told” to.

McConaughey and his wife, model Camila Alves,

share three children: Levi, 13, Vida, 11,

and Livingston 8.

Howeve r, the actor ’s hesitancy to vaccinate his children has n o t h i n g t o do with how seriously he’s taken the pan-demic, as he claimed he’d

“quarantined harder” than his

friends since last year. He also said that his family has utilized a “heavy amount” of coronavirus testing.

“I’m in a position though where I can do that, and I un-derstand that not everyone can do that,” he explained.

Furthermore, McConaughey addressed Texas’ controversial six-week abortion ban, calling it “overly aggressive.”

“It doesn’t doesn’t seem to open up the room for a sensible choice to be made at the right time,” the “Dallas Buyers Club” star said. “I believe in this: more responsibility, more personal responsibility to make the right choices. And we got to pick con-text with each situation, and each person’s situation, each woman’s situation.”

Will Smith details unconventional marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith in bookFox | Los Angeles

Will Smith is opening up about his unconventional

marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith. The actor detailed his trau-

matic childhood and rise to stardom in a new memoir titled “Will,” which hit bookshelves on Tuesday. In a new interview with “Good Morning Ameri-ca,” the Oscar-nominated star described how his relationship with the actress simply works for them.

The couple tied the knot in 1997 and share two children.

“We are pursuing uncondi-tional love,” the 53-year-old told the outlet. “We are pursuing the kind of love that everybody dreams about. We just don’t

know that the road [doesn’t] look like everybody think[s] it’s supposed to look.”

In a recent episode of “The Oprah Conversa-tion,” Smith divulged the early days of his re-lationship with Oprah Winfrey.

“We drank every day, and had sex multiple t imes every day, for four straight months,” the 67-year-old read from an ex-cerpt of Smith’s book, as quoted by E! News. “I started to wonder if this was a competition. Either way,

as far as I was concerned, there were only two possibilities:

(1) I was going to satis-fy this woman sexually, or (2) I was going to die trying.”

“Since you’re not dead, we a ssum e you won the com-p e t i t i o n ,” t h e h o s t told Smith,

w h o

Dwayne Johnson won’t be playing Santa in ‘Red One’IANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson will not be play-

ing Santa in his festive film ‘Red One’, his Seven Bucks Productions colleague Hiram Garcia has revealed.

The Rock is starring in the Christmas film for Amazon Studios but his Seven Bucks Productions colleague Hiram Garcia has confirmed that the ‘Jumanji’ star will not be don-ning a red suit, reports fema-lefirst.co.uk.

Garcia told Slash Film: “It’s funny, he’s not playing San-ta. For some reason, everyone thinks he’s playing Santa, but he’s playing something really awesome.

“We’re really excited about it. It’s the movie we’re look-ing to film next year. We’re thrilled to have Jake Kasdan to direct it, because he is such a master in that space and the tone we’re wanting to do.”

Garcia added that the new movie will turn the fes-tive genre “on its head” and will be something completely different for viewers.

He said: “It is very much ‘Hobbs and S h a w ’ m e e t s ‘Guardians of t h e G a l a x y ’ meets ‘Mir-acle on 34th Street ’. It ’s going to take holiday my-thology and turn it on its head. Really, it’s hard to find anoth-er Christmas movie to even compare to it.

“I don’t think

there’s ever been anything done like this in that space, which is always very appealing to us.”

Garcia continued: “We’re re-ally excited about it, Amazon’s been great with it, and we’re in the process -- the script’s about to be written, and we’ll be shooting that next year. Our goal is, knock on wood, we’re hoping to have that ready for December 2023.”

In a statement when the film was announced, Johnson said: “Hold my Mana, because this is exciting. Our Seven Bucks is very bullish on our partner-

Paul Rudd named People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive 2021’ANI | Washington

American actor Paul Rudd has

been revealed as People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ of the year 2021’ on Tuesday night’s episode of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’.

The ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ 2021 title has passed from ‘Black Pan-ther’ actor Michael B. Jordan to ‘Wanderlust’ star Paul Rudd.

As per E! News, the announce-ment was made by Stephen Col-bert on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show. In the episode, Colbert tested the 52-year-old actor to determine whether he

is sexy and that included having Paul dump copious amounts of water on himself and attempt to deliver the perfect stoop.

In the end, Colbert told Paul that he “tested negative for sexy.”

A humble Paul replied that the verdict “makes sense. I appre-ciate you just giving me a shot, honestly.”

Impressed by his humility, Colbert changed his tune and revealed that, not just a ‘sexy’ but Paul Rudd is the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’.

“Don’t you see, Paul? There’s nothing sexier than humility. That was the last test, and you passed, Paul!” Colbert said.

The ‘Clueless’ actor even

showed his humility in the Peo-ple cover story by saying he does “have an awareness, enough to know that when people hear that I’d be picked for this, they would say, ‘What?’”

He shared that his wife- actor Julie Yaeger was the only person he told about winning the title, and she was “stupefied.”

Gerrard returns to Premier League as Aston Villa bossAFP | London

Steven Gerrard will get his first taste of management in

the Premier League after the Liverpool legend was appointed Aston Villa boss yesterday.

Gerrard has left his role as Rangers manager to take charge at Villa, who sacked Dean Smith on Sunday after five successive league defeats.

Considered one of the great-est players in Premier League history, former England mid-fielder Gerrard made a prom-ising start to his managerial ca-reer by reviving the fortunes of the Glasgow giants.

The 41-year-old guided Rang-ers to a first Scottish Premier-ship title in 10 years last season, with the club finishing the cam-paign undefeated in the league for the first time in 122 years.

Gerrard, who took the reins at Ibrox in May 2018, also made progress in Europe, reaching the knockout stages of the Eu-ropa League for the past two seasons.

“The board of Aston Villa are delighted to appoint Steven as our new head coach,” said Villa CEO Christian Purslow, who was managing director of Liverpool when Gerrard was at the club.

“Since moving into coaching after his illustrious playing ca-reer, Steven began by managing and developing top young play-ers in the Liverpool FC Acad-emy, which is experience we value highly at Aston Villa.

“He then took the brave de-

cision to test himself in the in-tense and high-pressured en-vironment of the Scottish Old Firm.

“His subsequent achievement in winning the Premiership title with Glasgow Rangers really caught our eye as did his expe-rience in Europe.”

Villa finished 11th in the Pre-mier League last season, but have ambitions of challenging for Europe after spending near-ly £300 million ($402 million) on players over the past three seasons.

However, Smith paid the price for losing Jack Grealish to Manchester City in August in a British record £100 million deal, with new signings Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia struggling for form and fitness.

Villa are languishing in 16th place in the Premier League,

two points above the relegation zone, after 11 games.

Villa history Gerrard, who never won the

Premier League title as a player with Liverpool, is widely ex-pected to return to Anfield as manager at some stage but now has the task of proving himself in one of the toughest leagues in the world.

“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am im-mensely proud to become its new head coach,” said Gerrard.

“It was apparent how am-bitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.”

Rangers thanked Gerrard for his contribution to ending bit-ter rivals Celtic’s domination of

Scottish football. The Hoops won the league

in Gerrard’s first two seasons in Glasgow to match a record nine consecutive titles, but were blown away as Rangers romped to a 55th title by 25 points last season.

“I would firstly like to put on record my thanks to Steven for his outstanding efforts over the last three-and-a-half years at Rangers,” said Blues chairman Douglas Park.

“He has provided us all with some unforgettable moments, not least his delivery of the Scottish Premiership title back to Ibrox last season having not lost a match in the entire league campaign.

“In European competition, he has restored the good name and credibility of our club on the continent and leaves us in a very healthy position on the pitch.”

Saudis spoil Australia’s homecoming with stalemateSaudi Arabia hold Australia goalless in soggy World Cup qualifying stalemate

• Saudi Arabia remain three points clear at top of Group B

AFP | London

Saudi Arabia spoiled Aus-tralia’s homecoming party by holding the Socceroos

to a 0-0 draw yesterday and re-taining their three-point advan-tage over their hosts at the top of Asian World Cup qualifying Group B.

Australia, playing their first match on home soil in more than two years, dominated pos-session but were unable to make the most of the opportunities they created in front of a crowd of 23,214 at a rain-soaked West-ern Sydney Stadium.

The Saudis rode their luck at times in the first 75 minutes but had a flurry of chances towards the end of the contest to snatch a victory and extend their win-ning streak to 10 matches.

“Obviously we wanted the three points to give to the fans, it’s been so long,” said Australia captain Mathew Leckie.

“But we had a great perfor-mance tonight and we were just centimetres away from scoring a couple of goals. Just one of those games when the ball didn’t want to go in.”

Restrictions put in place to contain COVID-19 had kept Aus-tralia on the road since late 2019

and they had hoped the crowd would help them bounce back from their loss to Japan in their last match, a defeat that ended an 11-game winning streak.

Australia had much the better of a frantic and entertaining first half but their best moves tended to fizzle out with the final pass and they were unable to get a single shot on target.

The Socceroos again came out firing after the break and Leckie wrestled his way past his mark-er as the hour mark approached only to be denied from close range by Mohammed Al-Yami.

Five minutes later, the third-choice Saudi goalkeeper pro-duced a superb double save to keep out an Awer Mabil free

kick and a Martin Boyle strike off the rebound.

The visitors pressed forward in the last 15 minutes, however, and Australia keeper Mat Ryan was forced into action to keep out a Salman Al-Faraj shot and two Salem Al-Dawsari efforts.

“It was a very tough game for the two teams,” said Saudi coach Herve Renard.

“We had three chances, we didn’t score but it’s a very good result for us.”

With the top two from the group earning tickets to Qatar next year, Australia remain on course for a fifth successive appearance at the World Cup finals at the halfway mark of the final round of Asian qualifying.

Mount, Shaw could miss England qualifiers: Southgate

AFP | London

Gareth Southgate says Ma-son Mount and Luke Shaw

could miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Alba-nia and San Marino, but Jack Grealish is fit for the crucial fixtures on the road to Qatar.

Southgate’s side host Alba-nia at Wembley on Friday and travel to San Marino on Mon-day as they look to earn the four points required to qualify for next year’s World Cup.

Chelsea midfielder Mount is recovering after a tooth infec-tion kept him out of his club’s starting line-up for their last three games and is unlikely to feature against the Albanians.

Manchester United left-back Shaw sustained a head inju-ry in the derby defeat against Manchester City last weekend and is following concussion protocols.

The 26-year-old failed the head injury markers on the first day of his concussion ab-sence, which has further de-layed his potential return.

“I’ve got to check in with our medical staff for today’s update. Obviously, the longer that goes, the less likely it is (that Mount and Shaw could be involved against San Mari-no),” Southgate told reporters.

Hamilton has Neymar onside ahead of big F1 battle in BrazilAFP | London

Lewis Hamilton stayed on-side with his Brazilian fans

on Wednesday by calling up soc-cer star Neymar ahead of a big weekend for the Briton’s bid for a record eighth Formula One championship.

The Mercedes driver told re-porters he hoped to watch his friend in a World Cup qualifi-er between five times champi-ons Brazil and Colombia at the home of Sao Paulo’s Corinthians yesterday night.

“I’m very much in contact with Neymar, quite often, we were just talking actually earli-er today,” explained the Briton at a news conference for team sponsor Petronas.

“I know he’s playing tomor-row, I really want to go and watch the game.”

Paris St Germain forward Neymar and Hamilton have hung out on several occasions in the past, with the Brazilian once referring to the Formu-la One champion as a ‘brother from another mother’.

Formula One has only media duties yesterday with the action getting under way on Friday, with practice and a qualifying

session for Saturday’s sprint race.

Hamilton is 19 points adrift of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the championship with four races remaining, including In-terlagos.

Mercedes are only a point ahead of Red Bull in the con-structors’ championship.

This season has been one of the closest and hard-fought of recent years, with the lead swinging between the two con-tenders, and Hamilton hoped next year could be even more competitive with new rules and cars.

He said that should make a difference when it came to get-ting more grip from the tyres and also reducing the turbu-lence of following another car.

“They have developed this new car so you can use less downforce while following an-other car, so we are really hop-ing that the racing is going be the best that Formula One has ever seen,” he said.

The new cars will feature larger 18 inch wheels with cov-ers and simpler front and rear wings designed to make it easier for drivers to overtake.

Pliskova, Kontaveit open WTA Finals with winsKarolina Pliskova edges Garbiñe Muguruza in three-set thriller

• Anett Kontaveit defeats Barbora Krejcikova for her 11th straight win

AP | Mexico City

Karolina Pliskova over-came a slow start before beating Garbiñe Mugu-

ruza 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) on Wednes-day in her opening match at the WTA Finals.

In a contest between two for-mer No. 1-ranked players, the third-seeded Pliskova struggled early adjusting to the nearly 5,000-feet altitude of Guada-lajara, Mexico’s second largest city.

“The first set was not the best from me. The serve was amaz-ing in the second set, many free points on the first serve,” Plisk-ova said. “Then it was a fighting third set. I thought I just had too many chances, didn’t make it really, but happy it went my way in the end.”

Pliskova is playing the WTA Finals for the fifth time, having reached the semifinals in 2018 and ’19. The 2020 tournament was canceled.

She didn’t win any titles in 2021 but kept a high ranking by reaching the finals at Wim-bledon and Montreal, and the semifinals at Cincinnati.

Pliskova now has a 9-2 record against former Wimbledon and French Open champion Mu-guruza, who won the Chicago and Dubai titles this year and is making her fourth appearance at the season-ending event.

“That was a very tough match for both of us. It was a one-point

difference — I saved many match points and is a tough loss I fought as hard as I could,” Mu-guruza said. “I´m happy with my fighting spirit even though I lost.”

Muguruza dropped serve before winning four straight games to take a 4-2 lead and eventually clinched the first set in 38 minutes.

Pliskova settled down in the second and got service breaks in the second and eighth games to level the match.

The third set lasted more than an hour, with Muguruza saving three match points to force a tiebreaker, and another in the tiebreaker before Pliskova sealed the win.

Earlier, Anett Kontaveit ex-tended her hot streak to 11 con-secutive victories with a 6-3, 6-4 win over second-seeded Barbo-ra Krejcikova.

Kontaveit has won 27 of her last 29 matches, which include her title run at Ostrava where she beat Paula Badosa and Ma-ria Sakkari, both of whom are competing here.

“I’ve been in sort of top 30 for a lot of years,” Kontaveit said. “During the summer I was on a bit of a losing streak, then I started working with Dmitry (Tursunov) and was really hop-ing to get a few wins. I man-aged to win Cleveland, then it just sort of started rolling from there”.

Tursunov a former world No. 20, started working with Kon-taveit at the Cincinnati Masters, where the 25-year-old Estoni-an lost in the first round. Since then, Kontaveit has soared from No. 30 into the top 10. After top-

ranked Ash Barty of Australia opted not to defend the title because of travel restrictions in her country, Kontaveit edged out Ons Jabeur for the last spot in the season-ending champion-ship by beating Simona Halep in the final of the Transylvania Open.

“I’ve been believing in myself a little bit more, and the game definitely has clicked from just getting more wins and playing a lot of tennis and really feeling comfortable,” Kontaveit said.

Krejcikova, the French Open champion, started the year ranked 65th but captured three titles to qualify for the WTA Fi-nals.

“It’s just difficult because a couple days ago I was actual-ly playing in Europe, now I’m here,” Krejcikova said. “It’s re-ally, really, really difficult.”

The tournament, which was canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is played in a round-robin format.

The WTA Finals are being played in Guadalajara for this year only, with the event sched-uled to return to Shenzhen, Chi-na in 2022.

Win against Sinner convinces Murray he can compete at the top

AFP | Stockholm

Former world number one Andy Murray is convinced

that he can once again com-pete at the top level after tak-ing down Italian Jannik Sin-ner at the Stockholm Open on Wednesday for only his sec-ond win over a top 10 player in 2021.

The 34-year-old Murray had hip surgery in 2018 and 2019. Since his breaks for injury, the British player has not been able to revive the old form and consistency that saw him win three major singles titles.

Murray, ranked 143rd, se-cured his first win over a top 10 player in 14 months when he beat Poland’s Hu-bert Hurkacz in the opening round of the Vienna Open last month.

“I’m convinced I can play ... well, I can. I’m playing at the top level and I’m winning matches against the best play-ers in the world,” Murray told reporters after taking down top-seeded Sinner, ranked 10th, 7-6(4) 6-3.

“The ones that I’m losing, I’m pushing the best players in the world. That argument is finished. I can compete at the top level.”

The 20-year-old Sinner is one of the most promising young talents in men’s ten-nis and he made Murray work hard for the victory in the sec-ond round.

“It was a very tough match. He hits the ball huge from the

back of the court so there were a lot of long rallies and a lot of running. But it’s probably my best win this season. I want to keep it going now,” Murray said.

“If I want to move back up the rankings and have good runs in tournaments again, I need to win these matches.”

American Tommy Paul, ranked 52nd, will be Murray’s next opponent and a victory will see the Briton reach his first tour-level semi-final in two years.

“I said in the last few weeks, it’s coming,” he said.

“I don’t know if it will be this week or the beginning of next year, but I’m going to be pushing and getting deep in tournaments again.”

‘Devastated’ Morgan says Neesham made difference in semi-final thrillerAFP | London

England skipper Eoin Mor-gan on Wednesday said his

team were “devastated” after Jimmy Neesham’s clean strik-ing took them by surprise in their tense Twenty20 World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand.

Neesham blasted 27 off 11 balls and Daryl Mitchell hit an unbeaten 72 as New Zealand chased down their target of 167 with one over to spare in Abu Dhabi and make their first ever T20 World Cup final.

England looked in control after pushing the Kiwis to 107-4 in the 16th over but the left-handed Neesham took the bowling head on as he smashed Chris Jordan for two sixes and a four to get 23 runs from the over.

“We’re devastated. To be on the wrong side of a close game is not easy to take,” said Morgan.

“I thought we fought unbe-lievably well today on a wicket that didn’t necessarily suit our batting, but we managed to post in and around a par score.

“We were brilliant with the

ball. We were right in the game probably until Jimmy Neesh-am came to the wicket, if not ahead of the game.”

He added: “I think bowling to the short side is never easy. We’ve played against Jimmy a lot. He’s not struck the ball like that against us ever. It’s really good batting.”

Chasing 177 for victory, Aus-tralia were in trouble at 96-5 when Stoinis (40) and Wade, who hit the winning six in his 41, put on 81 runs to finish off the match with one over to spare in Dubai.

The left-handed Wade, who was dropped by Hasan Ali on 21, smashed three straight sixes off Shaheen Shah Afridi in the 19th over to set up a title clash with New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday.

David Warner made 49 be-fore being caught behind off leg-spinner Shadab Khan who took four wickets.

Australia suffered an early blow when Shaheen trapped skipper Aaron Finch lbw for nought as the Pakistan-domi-nated crowd erupted.

The in-form Warner kept up the attack from one end with support from Mitchell Marsh.

But Shadab turned up the heat in the seventh over to get Marsh out for 28.

The leg-spinner struck in each of his four overs to claim the big wickets of Steve Smith, for five, Warner, and Glenn Maxwell, for seven as Australia lost half their side for 96.

Warner walked when he was caught behind after hitting three fours and three sixes in

his 30-ball stay but replays later showed there was no contact off the batsman’s bat.

Stoinis and Wade steered the team to their second T20 World Cup semi-final and dream of a maiden title.

Blow to helmet Mohammad Rizwan, who

top-scored with 67, and Fakhar Zaman, who hit an unbeaten 55 off 32 deliveries, put on 72 for the second wicket to help Pakistan to a 176-4 after being put into bat.

Rizwan’s opening stand of 71 with skipper Babar Azam, who made 39, unsettled the Australi-an bowling in the first six overs of powerplay.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa broke the opening stand after sending back Babar, who has amassed 303 runs to lead the tournament’s batting chart, caught at long-on following his 34-ball knock laced with five fours.

Rizwan kept up the attack and smashed Zampa for a six to become the first player to aggregate 1,000 runs in T20 in-ternationals in a calendar year.

He survived a hit on the hel-met grill by a quick bouncer from Pat Cummins as the phys-io came in to conduct a con-cussion test with the batsman smiling.

A six and a single off pace b ow l e r Jo s h Ha z l e wo o d brought up his fifty in 41 balls with Zaman at the other end before he exploded as well.

Rizwan finally fell to Mitchell Starc while trying to force the pace and was caught at mid-off, ending an attacking partnership that came in 46 balls.

England captain Joe Root demands change after cricket race rowTDT | Manama

England captain Joe Root demanded change yester-

day after a racism row engulfed Yorkshire County Cricket Club, saying the events had “frac-tured our game and torn lives apart”.

Root, who is currently in Australia leading Ashes prepa-rations, issued his statement following weeks of escalating pressure at the club he has rep-resented since childhood.

Former player Azeem Rafiq filed a legal claim against York-shire last year, which has now

been settled, for failing to deal adequately with racist abuse he suffered while representing the county, saying he had been driven to thoughts of suicide.

Subsequent allegations have emerged from others, setting in motion additional investi-

gations.Yorkshire chairman Rog-

er Hutton resigned last week after sponsors withdrew and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stripped Heading-ley of the right to host interna-tional matches.

Root said he felt he had to speak out.

“In my capacity as England captain and as a senior player at Yorkshire, I feel compelled to address the current situation that has consumed the sport and YCCC,” Root said in a state-ment from England’s base on Australia’s Gold Coast.
