LOOKING FORWARDThe Future: Expansion and Development for Sotheby’s in Geneva• Expansion of the sales calendar to add mid-season sales, to be held in our new auction room

• Introduction of exhibitions and selling exhibitions thanks to a dedicated space in the new building at 2, rue François Diday

• Diversification of Sotheby’s activities in Geneva: public lectures, courses, evening events, knowledge sharing

• Added space and provision to provide even better, tailor-made service to our clients

A History: 2, rue François Diday• Located at the very heart of Geneva, Sotheby’s new building officially forms part of the city’s protected historic old town; it is just

minutes from the lakefront and it makes up part of the ‘banking quarter’ which developed in the latter part of the 19th century.

• It was built in the late neo-classical style in 1920-1 for the Banque Populaire Genevoise, by architect Marc Camoletti (1857-1940), who came from a dynasty of Geneva architects. His most famous projects include the city art museum (Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, 1903) and the imposing Post office building located very close to our premises.

• Over the years, it has been occupied by a number of banks, including the Caisse d’Epargne and most recently by the French bank, Société Générale.

• In the 1980s the heritage association Société d’Art Public challenged plans to demolish the building.

• The building is four storeys and 884 square metres.

DAVID BENNETT, Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland; Worldwide Chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery Division:

“The market has undergone a complete transformation since Sotheby’s first opened an office in Geneva four decades ago. As Sotheby’s Jewellery sales go from strength to strength, now is the perfect time for us to expand our plans for the region and to enhance the experiences we can offer to the world’s top collectors. The new space will unlock a world of possibilities for us with the introduction of new sales, public events, exhibitions and lectures. There’s no doubt that 2017 is set to be our busiest yet.”

CAROLINE LANG, Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland; Chairman, Impressionist, Contemporary and Modern Art, Switzerland:

“Switzerland has always punched well above its weight in the art market, given its comparatively small size. When big sales grab the global headlines, Switzerland is often there, discreetly, either as the place from which great paintings emanate, or as they find a new collector’s home. Our new space in Geneva is testament to that

- allowing us the opportunity to do more for the many great collectors who live here and to diversify what we do in the region. Rue François Diday is not just our beautiful new home, it’s a celebration of Switzerland’s critical place in the global market. And it’s now officially open: for exhibitions, for talks – and for business.”
