to a natural and enchanting destination The City of Geneva – alive with history yet thoroughly contemporary in outlook. Against the backdrop of spectacular Seneca Lake, Geneva offers architectural elegance, world-class cultural and recreational attractions and inviting accommodations, all interwoven with Geneva’s genuine hospitality. No wonder it has been ranked as one of the best small cities in America. Geneva is also the quintessential college town, immeasurably enriched by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Cornell University’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station and Finger Lakes Community College. Another major asset is the vigorous growth of Finger Lakes wineries, which positions this pastoral region as the next Napa Valley. But Geneva, historically considered the jewel of the Finger Lakes, will always retain a unique upstate New York identity, rooted in its distinguished history and independent citizenry. Whatever your agenda in the Finger Lakes, stay in Geneva and discover an area that is sensational by nature – and by design.

A little shopping today, and a wine trail road trip tomorrow.

A walk along the paved path in the Seneca Lake State Park is just what we need to stretch our legs. We aren’t alone – we pass joggers, bicyclers and roller bladers, and people enjoying the view from one of the benches along the lakefront. Out on the water we see

boats of all kinds, and wave at a couple of kayakers. They call out, “Come on in – the water’s fine! Why not rent one yourselves?” Good idea!

DAY O N E Driving into Geneva, we can see for miles the postcard views of Seneca Lake and lush, vineyard-dotted hillsides. Turning into downtown is another welcoming scene! There are colorful row houses and stately old mansions in the historic district, and lots of shops lining the sidewalks. Nestled in the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes and only halfway between Rochester and Syracuse, we feel lucky that Geneva is just a short drive from our home!

We pull into town just in time for a much-needed coffee refill at the local café. Concert tickets for a show later that night downtown brought us to Geneva, and we are making it a Finger Lakes weekend. We grab a bagel and head lakeside to the Visitor Center.

Helpful people with maps and brochures tell us all about close by wineries, breweries, and farms throughout the Finger Lakes!

Not far along the shore a wedding party is taking advantage of the beautiful backdrop!

By then, we’ve worked up an appetite for lunch before an afternoon of shopping.

We park in one of the many municipal lots and walk into downtown to find a lunch spot. We both love fresh and local with the foodie’s imaginative twist on burgers and sandwiches, and we find a lively place that fits the bill. With local craft-brewed beer on tap, this is soon to be our new favorite hangout.

We walk-off our lunch by strolling through the city, passing by our evening

concert venue and checking out the local history. Geneva is looking good at 200+ years! Obviously, it’s a community that’s thrived for generations.

We don’t have to look far for shopping. Right in downtown Geneva are plenty of options for finding local artisan crafts and fun indulgences. We hear about more shops back along Routes 5 & 20, and decide to make a circuit of it on our way to the outlet stores.

Later, we check into the hotel to freshen up and get

changed for dinner and the concert. What a view from our room! Shopping bags stowed away, we head out for our night on the town.

hether you're planning a family excursion, an athletic adventure, a locavore foodie tour, a

girls' wine trail weekend, or a romantic escape, use this guide to help create your perfect visit to the heart of the Finger Lakes. Here, in Geneva, is your next memorable afternoon, weekend, or extended getaway!

2

Page 5: Geneva NY Visitors Guide 2014

Sensational by nature

Indian, Italian, Japanese Hibachi, brew pubs… – so many choices! Now it’s just a matter of settling on what part of the world we want to visit for dinner, right here in Geneva. Then, it’s just a quick walk to the theater for the concert!

Heading back to our hotel after the show, we think about the wedding party we saw earlier, now likely dancing the night away by the lake. Tomorrow, we hit the road to explore the Finger Lakes!

DAY T WO We plan a drive along one side of Seneca Lake following the trail on the map in this guide, stopping off at wineries, farms and craft breweries along the way. The scenery is breathtaking – on one side of the road are acres of forest, farmland, vineyards and orchards. On the other side is the sparkling, deep, blue lake.

We pass a sign for a farm stand selling fresh produce, baked goods and jams. I shake the farmer’s hand, and tuck our food pantry treasures into the back seat just as a crowd of bicyclists turn off.

Men and women of all ages are participating in a bicycle tour around the lake! One young man said this was his second time cycling through the area this year, having recently competed in the

local half-iron race. Another revelation: Geneva annually hosts an internationally-attended, USA Triathlon-sanctioned, Olympic-qualifying athletic competition!

We make it to our first winery of the day in time to join a vineyard tour. The sun is climbing high in the sky, and the

rows of vines stretch into the distance! The Finger Lakes have a great terroir for cool climate wines, we learn – the soil, the sun and the sloping hills mean ideal conditions for growing Riesling grapes. After a tasting, we’re famished and glad to find the vineyard restaurant ready to welcome us for lunch!

The menu is full of fantastic food and wine pairings, and we notice that many of the ingredients are locally sourced. Our friendly server helps us to find the local dairies and farms on our map – some of them offer tours and have shops!

By the end of the day, we pull into the hotel parking lot with a trunk full of souvenirs, cases of wine, beer growlers, produce, breads and cheeses. Enough to get us through to our next visit to the Finger lakes!

DAY TH RE EWe spend a leisurely morning taking a ride on our rented bicycles, stopping to treat ourselves to ice cream. Sitting on a bench overlooking the lake, we bask in relaxation. A family strolling by say they stay at a campground nearby to where the grandparents rent a lakeside home for a few weeks every summer. From ages 5 to 105 – we’re all refreshed!

The kids had hiked a few trails and played in the water all week. Dad

rented a boat for some quiet fishing, and Mom said she was looking forward to a pedicure at the spa in the morning.

As we return our bicycles and get ready to pack up, we are already thinking about what to do on our next visit to Seneca Lake. Our conversation as we take in our last glimpses of downtown turns from where should we stay next time, to why not stay for all time? Right on the water or here in town, we could definitely make our home in Geneva!
