Basic Principles of Genetics

•How are traits controlled by dominant and recessive alleles?- Dominant alleles over power recessive alleles. Recessive

alleles control traits if there is two are two recessive alleles for that trait.

• How are traits controlled by co-dominant alleles?- When both alleles are equally strong and both alleles are found

in the hybrid genotype.

• Explain how the alleles of two parents combine to express traits in offspring?- The dominant allele will be present. If there are two dominant

alleles or if there is 1 dominant allele and 1 recessive allele, in both situations the that trait will be present.

Human Genome Project• •When did the project start and how did scientists hope to use this information (what were the

goals in the beginning)?

- The Human Genome Project started in 1990 and ended in 2003. Scientist wanted to use this information for human biology. One goal for the Human Genome Project was to develop genomic-scale technologies

• What are the implication of the Human Genome Project in regards of Ethical, Legal, and Social implications?

- The Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health Genome Programs set aside 3% to 5% of the Human Genome Project’s budget for the study of Ethical, Legal, Social Issues.

• How did the human genome project change current laws such as GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008)

- On May 21 President Bush signed a law that didn’t allow U.S. insurance companies and employers to discriminate against genetic tests.

Genetic Disorder•Compare and contrast the three different types of genetic disorders:    single gene disorder, chromosome abnormalities, multifactorial disorder

- Single gene disorder is an abnormality with one gene. Chromosome abnormalities are when the person as the wrong number of chromosome structures. Multifactorial disorder is when a person has multiple genes.

• How can genetic counseling help perspective parents who have a genetic disorder regarding future children?

- Counseling can give the parents a valuable information so they know what kind of help the child needs.

•How are karyotypes used to predict genetic disorders?- Scientists can predict genetic disorders by looking at the

extra or missing chromosome in a karyotype.

Argument 1Con- Human Cloning

Scientists from the University of Delaware said that this technology is not safe enough to use on humans. They say that it can physically harm the human embryo.

First cloned animal was Dolly the Sheep.

Argument 2Con- Human Cloning

According to scientist in the University of Delaware, if you clone a human, the clone will age quicker. The reason is because the cell used in the cloning process already exists in real life.

Argument 3Con- Human Cloning

Another reason why the government shouldn’t put money towards human cloning is that the child may have some psychological issues. They could feel less individual. Also the child may think he or she’s future is worth less because it lies in the hands of a cloned individual.

Argument 4 Con- Human Cloning

If you clone a human the parents may look at their child as an object. When they see their child as objects they think the child doesn’t have feelings like a normal human being. This will make the child feel like he or she is worth nothing.

Page 9: Genetics research

ConclusionI do believe that the government should not

put money towards human cloning. I think that the only thing that matters is how good of a life the child is going to have. The child shouldn’t have complications if we can prevent it.
