Hebrews 11 :4

By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By

faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he

is dead.

Genesis 34:7

Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they

heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury,

because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter.

“Walked with God.” This phrase puts Noah on a par with Enoch

(5:22, 24), the only other named individual to have walked with (ta ûlhth) God. Abraham, Isaac and godly kings “walked before” God

“Violence” denotes any antisocial, unneighborly activity. Very often it involves the use of brute force, but

it may just be the exploitation of the weak by the powerful or the poor by the rich (e.g., Amos 6:1–3), or the naive by the clever (Prov 16:29).

personal rights of others, motivated by greed and hate and often making

use of physical violence and brutality.

The transformation of oriental theology found in chaps. 1–5 continues in 6:1–4. Stories of superhuman demigods like

Gilgamesh were a commonplace, and intercourse with the divine was regularly sought in the fertility cults of Canaan and the sacred marriage

rites of Mesopotamia.

Through such procedures men sought to achieve enhanced earthly

life and even eternal life. But to Hebrew thinking such ideas were

utterly abhorrent.

… the pettiness of the gods’ motives in destroying mankind contrasts

starkly with the stern moral tone of the biblical account. Man is damned in the latter not for making noise but because of his incorrigible evil for ruining the earth and committing
