MISSIONS
VOLUME 9 ISSUE 1
Adopt-A-Family Thanks to the quick work of Youth Group Directors, Terry & Caitlynn VanDyke Jr. and Stewardship & Endowment Chair, Duane Christian, Geneseo UMC was able to sponsor Adopt-A-Family for Christmas. The gifts were wrapped and put under the tree by the Youth Group and delivered to Traer United Methodist Church Friday, December 13th, 2019 by Duane & Dixie Christian. Adopt-A-Family is sponsored by the Northeast Tama County Food Pantry. All items were purchased from funds that the Youth Group has collected throughout the year by generous Geneseo UMC members and friends. A cooler and basket of food was also brought by Deb & Ronn Mumm for a special Christmas meal for the family. Thank you!
Chick-fil-A Night fundraiser for Cedar Valley Community Foundation On Wednesday, December 11th, 2019, many members of Geneseo UMC supported Teen Trust by dining at Chick-fil-A in Waterloo! “Teen Trust” is a youth philanthropy group. Member Tristen Prouse is on the Grants Com-mittee and they are under the supervision of the Cedar Valley Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. They provide thousands of dollars of money to various organization and school scholarships throughout the Cedar Valley. A percentage of the sales that night went to Teen Trust, over $250 was raised just by eating yummy food! For more information about Teen Trust, please visit the following website: https://www.cfneia.org/communityleadership/teen-trust

Special Christmas Gift Baskets
Geneseo UMC was serving up smiles to our members who cannot join us due to special circumstances this Christmas Season. Pastor Harry delivered some cheer in December and Deb Mumm was able to help too by delivering customized gift baskets. We continue to pray for those who cannot join us during Worship Service, may the Lord bless you and keep you always. Amen. Customized gift baskets brought to
members who aren’t able to join us during Worship Services.
Children’s Christmas Performance December 8th, 2019
Christmas Dinner December 9th, 2019
Thank you to all the children who sang, spoke or played bells during Worship Service on December 8th, 2019. A special thank you to Deb Mumm and Diana Sash for putting the performance together so quickly. It’s always a treat to see the children in costumes.
Geneseo UMC’s Christmas Dinner was another night of relaxing fun and wonderful food catered by Donna Cooley Catering. Beautiful festive music was provided by Seth Butler on piano and Teagan & Tristen Prouse on flute duets. There was an impromptu musical performance by the musicians that was truly inspirational. A special birthday was celebrated and a bright blue poinsettia was given away as a door prize. Thank you to Dixie Christian, Galen Peckham, Beverly Baldwin, Peggy Crees, Deb Reding and Aniqa Prouse of the Outreach & Witness Committee for hosting the event. See you next year!
In December 2019 a survey of 2,000 people across the nation was taken asking if they had made resolutions for the coming year. 71% said they had made resolutions to diet or eat healthier, 65% said exercise more, and 54% said lose weight. It went on with resolution number ten at 13% to spend more time with family and friends.
Though this was a small sample size, the trend is pretty clear. We do not seem to think we are healthy or at least healthy enough. Diet and exercise seem to be the most important changes needed by the people surveyed.
It could be because our society, compared to most of the world, is wealthy, prosperous, and self-entertained. In this type of an environment fitness levels drop. Technology is a great blessing, but comes at a cost. Rather than running the bases on a ball diamond, we can virtually run them on a video game. It may be just as fun and stimulating to our senses, but we lose the basics of strength, balance and coordination. So we find ways to compensate; jogging, exercise, and choosing food that doesn’t add calories we cannot burn off.
So, what does this have to do with our spiritual life? We have been blessed by advancements in technology. We are able to obtain Scripture, teaching, and worship instantly. We are able to share with more people around the world than ever before.
However, if we are not careful in our relationship with God, we may come to expect ‘google-like’ responses and interaction with God. We may become more impressed with fast and easy answers than discerned truth. In that case, we may need a diet and
exercise plan for our spiritual life. In addition to jogging, we may need to walk with our God in prayer to sense God’s presence with us in our daily lives. In addition to fruits and vegetables, we may need to feast on God’s Word; savoring its meaning and letting it become part of us.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”
The New Year will bring plenty of challenges and changes. How are you preparing for the New Year? Have you made any resolutions? If so, are you including growth in your spiritual life; taking into account that we are mind, body and spirit?
Happy New Year! Pastor Harry

Vocalists Needed for GUMC Choir
Due to an unusual set of circumstances, a trumpet player with no formal vocal experience was recently named as the director of the GUMC choir. Now that he is firmly ensconced in the position, he has made some unpleasant remarks about legal action that will ensue if attempts are made to remove him. With this in mind, please accept this as a desperate plea to any and all vocalists in the congregation to join or re-join the choir, so that our “director” can be surrounded by singers who actually know what they are doing. Watch the bulletin for announcements as to rehearsal times. Submitted by: James H. Cook, Esq.
