NEWSLETTER / Issue - 19 / March 2014 PUTHIYA THALAIMURAI FOUNDATION (A People-based NGO working for Youth Development and Rural Education) Puthiya Thalaimurai Foundation with the help of Vasan Eye Care organised an Eye Camp on 24th January 2014, at Surya Polytechnic College in Vikravandi, Villupuram district. S.Venkatesh, the College Principal inaugurated the programme. In this camp more than 600 students got their eyes checked and those students who were found short sighted were given prescription. Similarly, another eye camp was organized in association with Vasan Eye care on 27.1.2014 & 28.1.2014 at Blue Star Higher Secondary School in Puducherry. J. Ravikumar, Correspondent of the School was the Chief Guest. More than 100 students were benefitted from this programme. GENERAL MEDICAL CAMP - THOOTHUKUDI In association with Gandhi Study Centre, Foundation observed Gandhiji’s Memorial day on January 30, 2014 at Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary School, T.Nagar in Chennai. K.Mohan, Chairman of Gandhi Study Centre was the chief guest for the event and gave a speech on the topic, “Will a disciplined life and a heart to serve give happiness and success in life?” In his speech he said that “Gandhiji was inspired to fight against slavery since he experienced the racial discrimination when he was thrown out of a train in South Africa”. He also explained Gandhis principles on Non violence, Simplicity, Empathy, Sacrifice, Punctuality and he also insisted that every person should stand up against injustice and fight for truth and justice. A team of ten members comprising Doctors and Para Medical Staff from SRM Hospital screened the patients for Blood pressure, Diabetes, Ear problem, Eye ailment etc. Many People consulted for arthritis and dental ailments. More than 100 people were benefitted by this camp. EYE CAMP - VILLUPURAM & PUDUCHERRY Villagers undergoing screening in Thoothukudi Puthiya Thalaimurai Foundation organized “Prevention of Tobacco use & Cancer Awareness” event on 20th January, 2014 at Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College in Kamudhi, Ramanathapuram. About 150 students participated in this event. Dr. Selvaraj, Principal was the Chief Guest. In his speech, he explained in detail to the people about the ill effects of Tobacco and how it causes cancer. He also stressed that students and youngsters should fight against the use of drugs and tobacco instead of falling prey to them. Dr. Victor pointed out that around 30 % of the Indian population is addicted to Drugs and Tobacco and such habits are bound to damage the liver and other vital organs of the body, causing cancer and other serious life threatening ailments. Dr. Balasubramanian, Srikriba- Project Executive, Reliance Foundation also participated in the event. In association with Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Plan, Puthiya Thalaimurai Foundation organized a Medical Camp at D.T.D.A Abhishekanadhar Higher Secondary School, Thoothukudi on 25.1.2014. The medical camp was inaugurated by Gunasekar, Kulayankarisal Panchayat President. Ganesan, Zonal Manager-South, M. Murugesan, District Honorary Organiser, Madhiazhagan, Executive Committee member were also present on this Camp. A team lead by Sappani Muthu, Doctor Agarwal Eye Hospital conducted the eye tests. More than hundred peoples were tested for Short Sight, Long Sight, Cataract and 6 people were prescribed for eye operation and were also advised the use of CM's health plan card to avail discounts on operations / free operation. Twenty plus women had come for uterus and pregnancy related consultation. A team lead by Dr.Suganthi, comprising nurses from Sundaram Arulraj Thoothukudi Hospital, conducted the General Medical Checkup. 52 people were screened for General Health, Blood pressure, Breathing problems and Diabetes. Based on the diagnosis, medicines were prescribed / provided by the doctors. Suresh Kannan, visited Anaikaraipatti Centre, Madurai District and Sundaranadappu & Seikalathur th th Centres, Sivagangai District on 14 & 15 February 2014 along with Sivagangai- Madurai District Programme Coordinator S. Prasad Yadav. In Anaikaraipatti Centre, around 70 Students studying. Pradeep Kumar and Rekha, the two dedicated volunteer-teachers are managing the Centre with a great deal of dedication and passion. In Sivagangai District's Sundaranadappu Centre 25 students are studying and is managed by Keerthi, the volunteer- teacher. The Seikalathur Centre with 30 students is managed by the volunteer- teacher Karthikeswari.
