NOTE: [1] Plenary indulgence for the faithful who publicly pray
the Act of Dedication of the Human Race to Christ the King (EI 2).
This prayer should be led by a priest or another suitable person
outside of the Mass, and not within the liturgy. [2] Where
customary, a procession may fittingly take place to honour Christ
the King. If the procession is Eucharistic in character, and held
after a Mass, the Host to be carried in the procession is
consecrated during that Mass. After Communion, the monstrance in
which the consecrated Host has been placed is set on the altar.
When the Prayer after Communion has been said, the Concluding Rites
are omitted and the procession forms. The priest wears a cope for a
procession: if the procession takes place immediately after Mass,
he may retain the chasuble.

8 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A
HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION on which the faithful are obliged to
participate in the celebration of the Eucharist, and should abstain
as far as possible from works hindering the worship to be rendered
to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day or the suitable relaxation
of body and mind (C.I.C. 1247).
Sundays or Fridays (where it has been decided) The Nativity of
the Lord…………………………………………. Dec 25 The Assumption of the B.V.
Mary………………………………... Aug 15
In order to fulfil the obligation, it is necessary only to
participate in the celebration of the Eucharist in a Catholic
church on the day of obligation. The rite, language or formulary of
the Eucharistic celebration does not matter.
N.B. C.I.C. 534 §1. After a pastor has taken possession of his
parish, he is obliged to apply a Mass for the people entrusted to
him on each Sunday and holy day of obligation in his diocese. If he
is legitimately impeded from this celebration, however, he is to
apply it on the same days through another or on other days
himself.

public triduum or septenary may be held before the other special
celebration days, observances in honor of the B.V. Mary, or any day
with the liturgical rank of Solemnity or Feast, according to the
judgement of the parish priest in response to the devotion of the
faithful.

Note (h) for this month. [2] The Constitution of Benedict XV
Incrumentum Altaris Sacrificium, allows all priests to celebrate 3
Masses on this day and IGMR 204 extends this permission to
concelebration. The first Mass may be for a personal intention, the
second must be for all the faithful departed, and the third must be
for the intention of the Pope. [3] It is not necessary that all 3
formularies of the missal be used consecutively – any of the
formuaries may be chosen for any Mass and/or a particular formulary
repeated for 2 or 3 Masses. [4] Pastors of souls may offer
instruction on avoiding practices involving divination,
reincarnation, dreams purportedly from the dead, and denial of the
immortality of the soul or hope of the resurrection (DPP 258).
Suitable suffrage for the dead encouraged by the Church should be
mentioned – such suffrage includes alms, works of mercy, fasting,
gaining indulgences for the dead, daily recitation of prayers or
invocations for the dead [at the Angelus, rosary and prayers before
meals] and other forms of piety especially in the month of November
(DPP 260). [5] Plenary indulgence for the souls in purgatory
obtained by the faithful visit a church and pray the Our Father and
Creed.
YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 9 Institutes or Societies of Consecrated
or Apostolic Life in each parish may also wish to celebrate their
Founders and significant saints or devotions with either a public
novena, septenary or triduum. All such public devotions are
indulgenced (EI 22.1.)

they are to be made in all the churches of the Vicariate.

Mission Sunday (whole weekend)
FAST, ABSTINENCE AND DAYS OF PENANCE FASTING Fasting is
obligatory for those who have completed their 18th year to the
beginning of their 60th year (C.I.C. 1241). One meal a day is
eaten. Some food may be taken at two other times in the day to
maintain strength (cf. Paenitemini III.2). Fasting is observed on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
ABSTINENCE Abstinence is binding on those who have completed
their 14th year (C.I.C. 1241). Those who abstain refrain from
eating meat but eggs, milk products and animal fat condiments are
allowed (cf. Paenitemini III.1). Abstinence is observed: • on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. • on all Wednesdays that are not
Solemnities. However, outside of Lent, the
faithful may substitute abstinence from meat with another act of
penance, such as prayer or a work of charity.
This Wednesday abstinence is observed instead of Fridays (as in
the Universal Church) due to the particular circumstances of the
Vicariate of Southern Arabia.
-
10 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A The sacred season of Lent is a time for
purification, enlightenment and renewal of faith. The virtue and
practice of penance form a necessary part of the preparation for
Easter. In a special way, on all the weekdays of Lent, the faithful
are encouraged to practice abstinence, fasting and other works of
prayer, penance, self-denial and charity according to ability. In
accordance with the desire of the Second Vatican Council, Paschalis
Sollemnitatis recommends that the Paschal fast and abstinence of
Good Friday be prolonged, where possible, on Holy Saturday until
the Easter Vigil. In the Vicariate of Southern Arabia, a special
Day of Prayer in memory of the modern martyrs of Yemen is observed
in June. The faithful are encouraged to remember the sacrifices of
Christians in the country (especially those who have given their
lives in service of the Gospel) and to perform works of prayer or
penance for the restoration of peace. In 2017, this day is observed
on June 26. EUCHARISTIC FAST The faithful who are to receive Holy
Communion must abstain for one hour before Holy Communion from any
food and drink, aside from water and medicine. However, the sick,
infirm and elderly (and their caregivers) may receive Holy
Communion even if they have eaten something within the preceding
hour. A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can
receive it a second time on the same day but only within a
Eucharistic celebration in which the person participates. Holy
Communion should not be received more than twice in a single day
unless one is in danger of death. Priests who (con)celebrate Mass
should always receive Holy Communion at that Mass, even if they
have received Holy Communion previously at other Masses.
EASTER OBLIGATION The faithful who have made their First Holy
Communion are to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during
the Easter Season. Within the Vicariate of Southern Arabia, this
precept may be fulfilled at any time between the First Sunday of
Lent and Trinity Sunday (Sunday after Pentecost). Each member of
the faithful who has reached the age of discretion is also obliged
to confess his or her grave sins at least once a year.
YEAR I/A NOVEMBER 2017 131
NOVEMBER 2017 The month of November is especially dedicated to
the veneration of the saints and prayer for the faithful departed.
Practices with these aims are encouraged during this month. These
may include: a) use of the daily Mass for the Dead or the Votive
Mass of All Saints, when
allowed by the rubrics. b) A Mass for the souls of all
parishioners and benefactors who passed away
within the preceding year (or another suitable period of time).
c) activities and devotions that highlight the lives of various
saints as examples
and models for the faithful., especially Patron Saints,
evangelizers to particular countries, or newly canonized
saints.
d) the substitution of the Litany of Saints (see Supplement) for
the Litany of the B.V. Mary after the rosary, if such would not
unduly disturb the faithful.
e) public recitation of the Psalm 129(130) Out of the depths
after the rosary or Angelus, with the invocation Eternal rest.
f) the veneration of relics and images of the saints, especially
on the Feast of All Saints.
g) encouragement of almsgiving, works of mercy and prayer for
the souls of the departed.
h) visits to a cemetery to pray for the departed, especially
between Nov 1 and Nov 8. When possible, a procession in the
cemetery with the Litany of Saints for the departed, and other
prayers with the blessing of graves may take place. The Order for
Visiting a Cemetery (BB 1739-1753) should be followed.
A plenary indulgence for the souls in purgatory is granted to
the faithful who visit a cemetery on any and each day between
November 1 and November 8 and pray for the departed; at other
times, the indulgence is partial. A partial indulgence for the
souls of the departed is also granted for invocations such as
Eternal Rest or the praying of Lauds (Morning Prayer) and Vespers
(Evening Prayer) from the Office of the Dead.

ABSOLUTION WITH GENERAL CONFESSION In churches of the Vicariate
that have a large numbers of parishioners, such that all are not
able to avail themselves of the opportunity for the sacrament of
Reconciliation in the weeks preceding the feast of the Nativity of
the Lord (Christmas) and the Resurrection of the Lord (Easter), the
Apostolic Vicar has determined that absolution without individual
confession may be offered to the faithful present on the following
2 occasions:
• at the Midnight Mass(es) of Christmas • on Good Friday,
especially before the principal liturgical action of the
day. The rite for imparting general absolution may be found in
the Supplement or in the Rite of Penance, Rite III. To validly
receive sacramental absolution when general absolution is given, a
person must be properly disposed and intend to confess within a
suitable period of time each grave (mortal) sin which at that
moment cannot be so confessed. He or she is to approach individual
confession as soon as possible, given the opportunity, before
receiving another general absolution, unless there is a just cause.
This is to be clearly announced to the assembled faithful before
the imparting of general absolution.

14 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A
OCCURRENCE AND CONCURRENCE OF DAYS Occurrence: If several
celebrations fall on the same day, the one that holds the highest
rank according to the Table of Liturgical Days is observed.
However, a Solemnity impeded by a liturgical day that takes
precedence over it should be transferred to the closest day not
listed under nos. 1-8 in the Table of Precedence. Whenever the
Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord falls on any day of Holy
Week, it is transferred to the Monday after Sunday II of Easter. In
the Vicariate of Southern Arabia, in order to ensure the observance
of the Sunday liturgies integral to certain seasons, Solemnities
and Feasts that fall on a weekend of Advent, Lent or Easter are
transferred to the preceding Thursday or following Monday,
according to the indications given by the Apostolic Vicar and noted
in this Ordo. Other celebrations are omitted in that year.
Concurrence: Should Vespers (Evening Prayer) of the current day’s
Office and First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the following day be
assigned for celebration on the same day, then Vespers (Evening
Prayer) of the celebration with the higher rank in the Table of
Liturgical Days takes precedence; in cases of equal rank, Vespers
(Evening Prayer) of the current day takes precedence. The arranging
of Mass according to the calendar In general, the Mass formulary
used always follows that of the liturgical day. As a rule, morning
Masses follow the observance of which Lauds (Morning Prayer) was
prayed. Evening Masses follow the observance of which Vespers
(Evening Prayer) was prayed.

YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 15 The Mass to be celebrated in cases of
concurrence The Congregation of Divine Worship gave the following
indications1 to be observed in cases where two liturgical days
overlap, particularly when both are of obligation.
• The Mass to be celebrated should be the Mass of the observance
of which Vespers was prayed (according to the rules of concurrence
given previously).
• For solemnities for which a particular vigil Mass exists
(Nativity of the
Lord, Epiphany, Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Ascension,
Pentecost, Ss. Peter and Paul, Assumption), this should be
preferred, even to Sunday.
However, the Congregation also authorized local Ordinaries to
follow alternate practice for pastoral reason, and instructed that
a uniform determination should be made at the beginning of the year
in the proper liturgical Calendar. All such indications for the
Vicariate of Southern Arabia can be found in this Ordo.
THE CALENDAR TO BE FOLLOWED In celebrations with the people in
the churches of the Vicariate, the General Calendar of the
Vicariate is followed. Particular indications for different
churches (e.g. regarding the observance of Titular feasts) are
given under the name of the place where the church is located. The
particular observances of churches in the Vicariate are annotated
in full, to indicate the missal and lectionary texts for the
day.
1 Notitiae 10 (1974), 222-223
-
16 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A The proper calendar of an
institute/society of consecrated or apostolic life may be
followed2:
• In individual celebration by a priest member (with one
minister participating, or without ministers).
• in the oratories of the houses of institutes/societies. • in
celebrations where members of an institute/society form an
overwhelming majority of those present.
However, even in celebrations with the people in the churches of
the Vicariate, nothing prevents the celebration of saints or feasts
in a religious calendar as a Votive Mass on most days of the
liturgical year, either:
• selected ad libitum by the priest celebrant (on Ordinary Time
weekdays) • selected by a priest celebrant/rector who judges it to
be a case of
pastoral advantage (on memorials, or during the weekdays of
Advent until Dec 16, Christmas weekdays from Jan 2, and Easter
weekdays).
• selected with the permission of the Apostolic Vicar (for days
numbered 5-9 in the Table of Liturgical Days)3.
The Glory to God (and Creed, if desired) may be added in
celebrations of a solemn nature. An additional reading may be
selected from the Common for more importanf observances. The
liturgical observances of the institutes/societies or apostolic or
consecrated life that are present in the Vicariate in a sizeable
number are also noted in this Ordo. However, due to constraints of
space, no indications regarding the Mas or lectionary texts are
printed under these observances. The user is instead directed to
the general rules for arranging the Mass on the different days of
the liturgical year, and the particular texts and rubrics of the
proper books of each institute/society. These should be applied
according to the liturgical rank of the observance that is
indicated, and using the appropriate Common. Consult pp. 20-24 for
more information. 2However, any Solemnities occurring in the
calendar of the church of celebration must be celebrated (IGMR
353). 3 For greater detail, consult IGMR 374-376 and the note under

celebrated on Friday, Saturday or Sunday that fulfil the weekly
obligation to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. It
is provided to assist preachers and choir directors and others
concerned. This table does not note any divergences occurring due
to an observance on the calendar of an institute/society of
consecrated/apostolic life.

the 3 sets of readings at any of the Masses. By special permission
of the Apostolic Vicar, this is also extended to the Vigil Mass–
the readings may be taken from another Christmas Mass.

18 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A
ARRANGEMENT OF THE MASS The arrangement of the Mass for
different days is found in the General Instruction of the Roman
Missal (IGMR), nn. 46-90 and 353 -367, as well as individual
rubrics of the Roman Missal. SUNDAYS All Sundays of the year are
provided with a proper formulary for the Mass. The Creed is prayed
on all Sundays, and the Glory to God is used on Sundays outside of
Advent and Lent. During the Sundays of Lent, the proper Prayer over
the People is mandatory. 3 readings are used on Sundays and can be
found in the Proper of Time under the title of that Sunday
according to the given lectionary year.
Example entry for Sundays: (1) prop Mass; Gl; Cr; Pf of [Season
or Sunday]; op. Sol. Bl. of [season][number]. Explanation: The Mass
formulary is proper and taken from that Sunday in the Proper of
Time section of the missal. The Glory to God and Creed are used. In
Ordinary Time, the preface is selected from the Sunday prefaces. At
other times, it may be a seasonal preface, or even a proper
preface. A suitable Solemn Blessing appropriate to the season or
time of year may be used at the option of the celebrant. The number
indicates where it can be found in the Solemn Blessing section at
the end of the Order of the Mass. (2) prop Mass; no Gl; Cr; [prop]
Pf of [Season/Sunday]; [prop] Pryr over Ppl Explanation: The Mass
formulary is proper and taken from that Sunday in the Proper of
Time section of the missal. The Creed is used but the Glory to God
is omitted. The preface may be a seasonal preface (from the Preface
section in the middle of the missal) or even a proper preface
(found under the Sunday). The Prayer over the People concludes the
Mass – if proper, it is found under the texts of the Sunday. If a
number is printed, it indicates where it can be found in the list
of Prayers over the People at the end of the Order of the Mass.

OCTOBER 2017
The month of October is popularly marked by pious exercises in
honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary centered around the holy Rosary.
The recommendation given in this Ordo for the month of May may be
followed where applicable; among the additional practices for
October, the following may be considered: • As encouraged by the
Book of Blessings (n. 1464) and the Directory of Popular
Piety (n. 198), a more solemn celebration for the blessing of
rosaries may take place during this month, especially on the
memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) or at the end of the
month.
• The rosary may be solemnized in different ways, through the
addition of hymns, Scripture passages or prayers related to the
mysteries, inserted in between each decade. (cf. DPP 199).
• In churches where there is a strong Capuchin presence, the
occasional praying of the Franciscan Corona rosary in honor of the
Seven Joys of the B.V. Mary may be encouraged, especially on more
solemn occasions.
• in the blessing of homes, every encouragement should be given
to the practice of regular family prayer, especially when centered
around the holy rosary.
• a plenary indulgence is obtained by the faithful who pray the
rosary (5 decades, with meditation on the mysteries) in the family,
church or other gathering of the faithful. (E.I. 17.1). In other
circumstances, the indulgence is partial.

YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 19
SEASONAL WEEKDAYS Each weekday in the seasons of Advent,
Christmas, Lent and Easter is provided with a proper formulary for
the Mass. There are 2 readings on seasonal weekdays; during the
Easter Season, the first reading is traditionally from the Acts of
the Apostles.
Example entry for weekdays in season: prop Mass of wkdy; Pf of
[Season]; [opt. Pryr Over Ppl]
Explanation: The Mass formulary is proper. It can be found in
the Proper of Time, under the weekday mentioned in the title of the
day. A seasonal preface is used. Weekdays of Lent may also have a
Prayer over the People proper to the day, found under the same
weekday, after the Prayer after Communion.
WEEKDAYS IN ORDINARY TIME In general, the Mass of the preceding
Sunday is used. In the case of the First Week of Ordinary Time
(following the Sunday of the Baptism of the Lord), and the 34th
Week (following the Sunday of Christ of King), the formulary
provided in the missal for the respective week is used. However, on
any weekday in Ordinary Time, the antiphons and prayers may also be
taken from another suitable Sunday in Ordinary Time4. The priest
celebrant may also choose to use the (antiphons and) Prayers for
Various Needs provided in the Missal. He may even use the Collect
alone from one of the formularies for Various Needs, with the other
prayers and antiphons taken from the preceding or another suitable
Sunday in Ordinary Time. Two readings are generally used on the
weekdays of Ordinary Time, according to the lectionary cycle (in
2017, Year I)
4 This option may be useful in order to expose the faithful to
prayers from Sundays omitted in a given year due to the seasons of
Lent and Easter.
-
20 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A
Example entry for weekdays in Ordinary Time: [OT Sun X]; Com.Pf.
I-VI or any Ms (p.30) Sugg: For Peace [VN 30];
Explanation: The Mass is taken from the Xth Sunday of Ordinary
Time, but without the Glory to God or Creed, and using one of the 6
Common Prefaces. The suggested Mass (possibly based on the time of
year, or a theme of the readings) is the Votive Mass for Peace and
Justice. This is Mass no. 30 in the Various Needs (VN) section of
the missal. The celebrant may consult p. 30 for all other options
possible on weekdays in Ordinary Time.
SOLEMNITIES & FEASTS The Glory to God is used on Solemnities
and Feasts. The Creed is added on Solemnities. The antiphons and
prayers are usually proper, otherwise, they are taken from the
appropriate Common. The preface is also often proper, especially
for Solemnities – if not, the one appropriate to the category of
the saint or observance is selected. 3 readings are assigned for
Solemnities, and 2 for feasts, unless they are feasts of the Lord
occurring on Sunday. They can usually be found in the Proper of
Saints – if additional readings are required, then they are taken
from the appropriate Common.5 In the Vicariate of Southern Arabia,
3 readings are also used for feasts of the saints when their Masses
are used as obligation Masses. A Solemn Blessing is often
recommended in the missal for certain saints. In this Ordo, a
suitable Solemn Blessing or Prayer over the People (from the
collections found after the Order of the Mass in the Roman Missal)
is always suggested.
Example entries for Solemnities and Feasts: prop Mass; Gl; [Cr];
prop. Pf. opt. Sol. Bl. of (Saint) [number] or prop Mass; Gl; [Cr];
prop. Pf. opt. Pryr over Ppl [number]
5When the cycle of weekday readings is interrupted by a
Solemnity or Feast, the Priest is permitted to combine the omitted
parts with other readings, or choose between readings, keeping in
mind the scheme of readings for the entire week.

YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 21
Explanation: The Mass formulary is proper, and texts can usually
be found in the Proper of Saints, under the name of the saint/date.
The Glory to God (and Creed) are used. A suitable Solemn Blessing
for the category of the Saint may be used at the option of the
presiding celebrant – its number in the section of Solemn Blessings
in the Roman Missal is indicated. Alternatively, a suitable Prayer
over the People, from the 28 prayers given after the Order of the
Mass, may be used.
VIGILS There are 8 solemnities which possess special Mass
formularies for use in Mass celebrated on the evening before the
feast day. These are the solemnities of the Nativity of the Lord
(Christmas), his Epiphany, his Resurrection (Easter), his
Ascension, Pentecost, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Ss.
Peter and Paul, and the Assumption of the B.V. Mary. The Vigils of
the Resurrection and Pentecost are extended vigils, with several
readings and other modifications in the Mass, according to the
proper rubrics given for both observances. The Easter Vigil is
mandatory while that of Pentecost (in its extended form) is
optional. All other Vigils do not alter the regular structure of
the Mass, but consist simply of distinctive Mass texts. Friday: If
1 of the 8 solemnities occurs on a Sunday, the Vigil formulary is
used for the obligation Masses both of Friday and Saturday.
However, the solemnities of Christmas and Easter are not
anticipated on the preceding Friday, and so the Vigil Mass is used
only on the Saturday. Replacement of the Vigil Mass with the Mass
‘During the Day’ Readings: The Vigils of Epiphany and Ascension use
the same Lectionary readings as assigned to the Mass “During the
Day”. All the other Vigils possess unique readings. Where it is
possible, it is encouraged that the Vigil Mass and its readings
both be used on the eve of these Solemnities. However, aside from
the Easter Vigil, in cases of pastoral necessity (particularly
where priests must preach at multiple Masses) the Apostolic Vicar
specially permits the readings assigned to the Mass “During the
Day” to be used at the Vigil Mass on Friday-Saturday instead of its
proper readings.
-
22 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A Formularies: As a rule, the formulary
of the Vigil Mass should still be used, even if the readings are
changed. However, aside from the Vigils of Easter and Christmas,
for pastoral reasons (e.g. titular saint, confusion of the
faithful, etc.) the formulary for the Vigil Mass on Friday-Saturday
may be replaced by that of the Mass “During the Day” by special
permission of the Apostolic Vicar. MEMORIALS The Glory to God is
not usually used on memorials, unless a special festive and solemn
reason suggests its use (cf. IGMR 53). Memorials of the General
Calendar are usually provided with a proper Collect. If one is
lacking, it is taken from the appropriate Common. If the other
prayers and antiphons are proper, they should be used. Otherwise,
they are selected either from the Common or the weekday of the
current time of year. If no proper preface is provided, the preface
may be either of the category of the saint, or of the season. In
general, the weekday cycle of readings is followed, unless for
pastoral reasons readings given in the Proper of Saints or from a
suitable Common are selected. Readings for memorials are printed in
the Proper of Saints A few memorials have Proper readings (either
the First Reading or Gospel, or both), often containing mention of
the saint(s) of the day. When only one of the readings is Proper,
this Ordo lists 2 choices – the Proper reading (from the Proper of
Saints) in combination with the other weekday reading (from the
Proper of Time), or – for convenience of lectors - the Proper
reading together with the other companion reading given for that
day in the Proper of Saints .
Example entries for Memorials: (1) prop Mass; Pf. of
[category]/[season] Explanation: All texts of the Mass are proper
to the observance and can be found under the name of the saint and
the corresponding date in the Proper of Saints. The Preface may be
chosen from the category of Saint or taken from the season. (2)

YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 23
Explanation: The Collect is proper to the observance and can be
found under the name of the saint and corresponding date in the
Proper of Saints. The rest of the texts (prayers and antiphons) are
taken either from the Common (found in the Common of Saints) or
from the weekday texts (of the current weekday in the Proper of
Time; weekdays of Ordinary Time use the preceding Sunday). The
Preface chosen may correspond to that category of Saint or taken
from the season.
(3) prop Col/PO/PC; ant. from Com/wkdy; Pf. of
[category]/[season]. Explanation: The Prayers of the Mass (Collect,
Prayer over the Offerings, Prayer after Communion) are proper to
the observance and can be found under the name of the saint and
corresponding date in the Proper of Saints. The entrance and
communion antiphons are taken either from the Common (found in the
Common of Saints) or from the weekday texts (of the current weekday
in the Proper of Time; weekdays of Ordinary Time use the preceding
Sunday). The Preface may be suitable to that category of Saint or
taken from the season.
COMMEMORATIONS Any memorials which occur during Dec 17-24, the
Christmas Octave, or Lenten weekdays are celebrated as
commemorations. The Mass is taken entirely from the weekday with
the appropriate seasonal colour – however, the Collect of the Mass
is replaced by the Collect of the Saint.
Example entries for Commemorations: prop Col of St.; rest as on
weekday (above) Explanation: The Collect is proper and taken from
the Proper of Saints. The rest of the Mass follows what is noted in
the Ordo for the weekday celebration (always printed, since
commemorations are always optional).

24 INTRODUCTION YEAR I/A
Brief Note in the use of the Common of Saints • On
Memorials:
o A page reference in the Roman Missal to the Commons only
indicates
a suitable text. Another text from the same Common may always be
chosen.
o If 2 Commons are suggested, then either one may be used.
However, texts from 2 different Commons should not be mixed.
o It is always permitted, even if a reference is given to a
particular
category (e.g. Virgins, Martyrs, etc.), to use texts from the
Common of Holy Men and Women, which refers to Sainthood in
general.
• The Priest may always exchange antiphons and prayers within
the same
Common, choosing those texts which seem more suitable for
pastoral reasons. However, Masses designated for specific times or
circumstances (e.g. for use in Eastertide) can only be used in
those times or circumstances.
• In the individual Commons, texts in the singular (for one
saint) may changed to the plural (for several saints) and vice
versa.
• In the Common of Martyrs and the Common of Holy Men and Women,
all
the prayers that are given for men may also be used for women,
with the necessary change of gender.

YEAR I/A INTRODUCTION 25
MASSES ‘EXTRA ORDINEM OFFICII’ MASSES FOR THE DEAD Masses for
the Dead are found in the last section at the end of the Roman
Missal. When using the different formularies:
• all the texts may be exchanged for one another, especially the
prayers. The missal prints complete Masses with their own antiphons
and prayers only for convenience.
• if the prayers for funerals and anniversaries are used in
other circumstances (e.g. a Mass offered on a weekday in Ordinary
Time for the dead), less suited phrasing (e.g. “today”, “whose
funeral day”, etc.) is omitted.
• Appropriate changes may be made for gender and number. The
Funeral Mass may be
