GLEN ELLYN – Students attwo Glen Ellyn School District41 elementary schools start-ed the semester Monday withnew classrooms.
Ben Franklin and Lincolnelementary schools each hadfour new classrooms and in-creased storage space added tothe existing buildings.
The Board of Educationapproved spending $15 mil-lion on additional classroomsat all four district elementa-ry schools in January 2014.Construction began in Marchas part of the district’s planto eliminate portable class-rooms.
At Ben Franklin, the class-rooms are being used byfourth- and fifth-grade science, technology, engineering, artand math classes, as well asgeneral education students. The Lincoln classrooms alsoare being used for fourth- andfifth-grade STEAM.
The rooms take up 900square feet, and their designwas selected based on its abil-ity to increase flexibility inteaching.
“There’s just so many dif-ferent ways to use the class-room,” Superintendent PaulGordon said.
The furniture in the class-
rooms is on wheels, assistantsuperintendent Bob Ciserel-la said, allowing teachers tomove items as needed. Thenew rooms also have flexible,sound-proof walls, so theycan be opened to create morespace.
“Our goal is to provide flex-ibility and maximize collabo-
ration,” Ciserella said.Lincoln Principal Linda
Schweikhofer said the kidswere amazed with their newlearning space Monday.
“As the kids came out ofthe morning classes … theywere talking about how awe-some [the classrooms] are,”she said.
Teachers have told Sch-weikhofer the flexibility hasbeen a big hit so far and havealready used the adaptablewalls to make a larger class-room.
“It just feels like a positivespace for students to learn inand teachers to teach in,” Sch-weikhofer said.
Gordon said a majority ofthe teachers have seen thenew rooms and “each one wasso excited.” He even receivedan email from one teacherwho was “just overjoyed andcould not believe” everythingthe classroom had.
Ciserella said he was inLincoln one day and saw fourchildren and two adults peak-ing into the classroom, so hegave them a tour.
“The kids were speech-less – so excited about thenew changes that were takingplace,” he said.
Work is continuing atForest Glen and Churchill el-ementary schools. Construc-tion has stopped at ForestGlen because of cold weather, but Ciserella said the founda-tion is down, the walls are upand some roofing is done.
Foundation and plumb-ing work has begun at Chur-chill. New classrooms at bothschools are expected to beopen by the start of the 2015-16school year.
The board is currently dis-cussing whether to expand tofull-day kindergarten. If theydecided to do so, a new schoolor more classroom additionswould have to be built.
“If the board takes action, these are the types of class-rooms I’d like to see in our
Fifth-graders Elisha Alamgir (clockwise from left), Ella Kaslewicz, Anne Dillman, Carolyn Nelson and KylieMcGinley work together on a problem Tuesday in a Level 3 STEAM class in one of the new classrooms atBenjamin Franklin Elementary School.

Q: Does anyone every say theywant to hear better as their NewYear’s Resolution?
A: Sadly,no. he waymost peoplecommunicatethat resolutionis they wish thatothers wouldstop mumbling, stop telling
them to get their hearing checked, not get irritated when asking othersto repeat what they said, turndown those background noises inrestaurants and stores, and etc.
Our very sense of cognition, meaning one’s awareness andconnection to life around them, comes more through the auditory(hearing) sense than all the otherfour senses combined. It’s not justwhat words are spoken but also howthose words are spoken that impactsour perception and understanding ofour environment and others.
When the sense of hearing isafected, it keenly afects the person. It is known that the potentialpsychological problems that arisefrom not hearing well are: Stress,
If a person is not hearing well andthey lack conidence to engagesocially, what is the solution? Correctthe hearing. “Hiding” the hearingproblem doesn’t fool anybody.Interpersonal relationships aresigniicantly afected when hearingdecreases. Here are some of the mostcommon statements patients makewhen their hearing is evaluated andasked what concerns them abouttheir hearing:
- I only have trouble hearing wherethere is noise.
- Certain people mumble so I can’tunderstand them.
- I hear ine when people face mewhen they are talking. It’s when theyturn away I can’t hear.
- My (signiicant other) has a sotvoice.
Everyone wants to hear well. Butsometimes hearing well requireshelp. It starts with a hearingevaluation by a Doctor of Audiology.
GLEN ELLYN – GlenbardTownship High School Dis-trict 87 administrators andteachers are pleased with theprogress students have madesince the district’s iPad roll-out began last semester.
In August, the 2,100 Glen-bard freshmen received dis-trict-issued iPads, which holdtheir textbooks, novels, work-books and assignment mate-rials.
Glenbard West High SchoolPrincipal Peter Monaghansaid the program’s successshouldn’t be a surprise.
Students and teachers allunderwent training beforethe school year so they wouldknow how to use the iPadsand relevant applications.
Monaghan said he was a lit-tle nervous about the rollout, but thanks to “a great deal ofpreparation,” there haven’tbeen any major issues so far.Teachers and students alikehave gone beyond his expec-tations in terms of adapting tothe devices, he said.
Monaghan said he recent-ly got the chance to watchthe iPads being used in a U.S.history class. Students wereable to read articles and com-plete and submit their home-work on the device. They alsoused a map application thatshowed where each of theevents being studied had hap-pened.
“It was one of the best les-sons I’ve seen using it,” hesaid.
Teachers across the dis-trict are incorporating theiPads in new and innovativeways.
Gary Heilers, departmentchair for physical education, health and driver’s educa-tion at Glenbard North HighSchool, said iPads are even be-ing used in his classes.
The biggest way they areincluded in physical educa-tion is by tracking studentfitness. Students wear heartmonitors, which are connect-ed to Heilers’ iPad. He canwatch the progress of the en-tire class and use the data tohelp students analyze theirworkouts.
Prior to iPads, studentscould wear a heart monitorduring class, but tracking thedata was much more difficult.
“Now we have some con-crete stuff,” Heilers said.
The iPads also are beingused in the weight room, where Heilers has the stu-dents video model themselvesdoing a squat. After that, theywatch the recording to see ifthey are doing the exercisecorrectly and where to im-prove their form.
“To video model is greatbecause they actually get asense of what they’re doingwrong and right,” he said.
In health classes, studentseach get remote controls toanswer questions. The iPadtabulates the responses andHeilers can use the data to de-termine whether students un-derstand the subject matter.
Driver’s education classesdon’t include iPads yet sinceonly freshmen have them, butHeilers said next year’s stu-dents will likely do peer as-sessments of other students’driving with the iPads.
“It’s kind of taken over asthe norm for us,” he said.
At Glenbard East HighSchool, English teacher Jen-nifer O’Connor has her stu-dents use the iPad camera torecord themselves giving aspeech and provide a self as-sessment of the performance, according to district Commu-nications Coordinator PegMannion. Students will lookback on previous videos to seehow they progress.
Monaghan said the twobiggest outcomes of the iPadrollout are the increased or-ganization and heightened en-gagement of students.
He also said he doesn’tsee any major changes thatneed to be made. If he coulddo it again, Monaghan saidhe would make minor tweaks, but nothing substantial.
“I would say that so far, itseems to be going better thanexpected for this early,” hesaid.
He credited the studentsand teachers with all the suc-cess.

District 41’s Learner Characteristics are coming alive in everybuilding and classroom through our Problem-Based Learningapproach. In District 41, we believe our students must grapplewith authentic, rigorous problems that engage our students andallow them to learn and grow. Our Problem-Based Learningmodel is grounded in thestate and national standards.Problem-Based Learning is notan event or a random specialoccurrence; it is rooted in ourplanned units and only thriveswhen it is connected to authen-tic learning and the standards.
The real-world problem becomes the driving force of whystudents are learning math, science, literacy, social studies, music, art, physical education, etc. The problem brings rele-vance to the learning. Students have been learning about linearequations for years. But how many students know why they arelearning it, besides to pass a test? Or an even better questionis, how many students transfer this knowledge about linearequations to new or unique situations to solve a problem? Ourstudents have always learned about war and conflict, but havethey learned why the conflict started and how it relates to to-day’s problems? And can they help solve the problems of tomor-row because they know more than dates and people’s names?
As a part of Problem-Based Learning, we also have our stu-dents present their solutions to panels of “experts.” This allowsstudents to communicate directly with those in the field whothen give our students critical feedback and encouragement tocontinue learning and exploring their ideas. This past month,Ben Franklin Elementary School students who studied mon-arch butterflies through Problem-Based Learning attended aGlen Ellyn Environmental Commission meeting. The studentspresented and provided expert testimony as the commissiondiscussed the monarch butterfly population issue.
The driving factor in education should be the learning, nottests. I am not naive enough to believe tests are not a part of ed-ucation. They are, but I don’t believe tests are why schools exist.Students should want to come to school because they love learn-ing and they are engaged with the problems they are presented.
If there are businesses or individuals in the area who are in-terested in participating in Problem-Based Learning with ourstudents, call the district office and let us know at 630-790-6498.
Thank you to all of the community members who have engagedwith us through Problem-Based Learning this [school] year. It takesan entire community to support student learning and success.

Glen Ellyn Park Districtshould reduce taxesI am disappointed that after
news releases about how [the]Glen Ellyn Park District hasstockpiled money, that we don’treap the reward in [the] form of atax reduction. If the board mem-bers bothered to look up on theirmaster plans and surveys, CODand the village of Glen Ellyn haveimplemented no tax increaserecently. The community hassupported GEPD’s expansions fora decade. It’s time for a breather.
Students shouldn’tprovide election inputI [wanted to Sound Off]
regarding the Hadley projectregarding low election turnouts.I was just thinking the students, who are still children, shouldstick to reading, writing andarithmetic, and leave that otherkind of thing to the adults.
To save money, try goingto community collegeAlthough private four-year
colleges are noting their veryminimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregard-ing the inflation rate in manyyears by large percents. Yet,students are burdened withloans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find ithard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spendingthe first two years at a highquality community college likethe College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, whichbecomes quite easy for mostfour-year colleges. You’ll end upwith as good an education, lessstudent loans and probably saveat least $50,000 to $200,000 inthe process.
No more fireworks atmidnight New Year’s DayThis is in regards to New Year’s
[Eve and Day] celebrations. Iwould like to address all thesepeople who feel the need tobring their neighbors into theircelebrations by letting off fire-works at midnight. It’s very dis-turbing. It’s very unnecessary. And if you want to celebrate, celebrate on your own. But don’tinvolve all your neighbors.
Downers Grove shouldconsider village complexThere has been a lot of talk
about spending $52 milliondollars on a new village complexto include the village hall, policedepartment and fleet mainte-nance. If residents do not feelit is appropriate to spend thisamount of money, why doesn’tDowners Grove consider usingan existing building that wouldonly need interior work? Usingan existing building should cutdown dramatically on the finalcost. There is an unoccupiedDominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample spaceto meet the needs of DownersGrove. There is also ample park-ing. If that amount of parkingis not needed, then perhaps afleet building could be built inthe parking lot area. DownersGrove could sell the existingvillage hall and use the proceedstoward the new facility. Some-times thinking outside the box isthe best option.
Property taxes down, water and rubbish rates upIt is great that Elmhurst is low-
ering our property taxes a littlethis year, but they are raisingour water and rubbish rates.Talk about giving with one handand taking away with the other!

No financial long runfor Illinois with RaunerTo the editor:Regarding the Illinois financial
crisis facing Gov.-elect BruceRauner, former governor andRauner transition adviser JimEdgar made this truly disingenu-ous statement:“I’m amazed he was able to
say as little and promise as littleand get elected.”Nobody should be amazed
that Rauner won by running afraudulent campaign based ontax cuts for every individualand corporation, including thewealthy ones, while criticaldepartments like Correctionsand Human Services are alreadyrunning out of money. When pressed, Rauner offered
no specifics, just the need totrust a billionaire who made hisfortune, in part, by gaming thetax laws to his advantage atthe expense of the public. Now,Rauner is the public, but he hasnot changed his spots one iota. He’s suddenly shocked, shockedthat the state’s financial condi-tion is worse than he realizedduring the campaign. But Edgar did get one thing
right when he said “Doomsday’scoming, we do not have a print-ing press.”Outgoing Gov. Quinn ran a
principled campaign based onspending cuts, tax increases, paying down the pension deficit, paying state vendors morequickly and maintaining essen-tial services.
We know how Bruce Raunermade his billion. We have noidea how he’s going to salvageIllinois based on tax cuts foreveryone, which will doubleour debt while critical agenciesrun out of money. His final takeis simply “I ain’t perfect. I failsometimes. But you know what?In the long run, I don’t fail.”That may work for Bruce Raun-
er’s long run but not for Illinois. The state doesn’t have one.

Obamacare is misnamedTo the editor:Initially, I just wanted to
shop my health care insurancebecause it was too expensive. While I was shopping for more
affordable health care insurance,I found out the pain I had in myhip was arthritis. It was thenthat I was denied health carecoverage because of a preex-isting condition. So I called mycongressman to grouse andhe got me [the] phone numberof a provider who, after manymonths and three appeal letters, agreed to sell me health careinsurance. Today, I am pain freeafter two successful surgeries.Since then I resolved to
visit my doctor once a year fora check up, something very fewmen actually do. However, myhealth care plan was canceledby the government and mydoctor does not take the planI’m able to afford.I’m trying to stick to my reso-
lution to make an annual doctorvisit, but the doctors in my newnetwork are almost nonexistentor more than 10 miles away. Also, my premiums have sky-rocketed and my deductible is500 percent higher than it wasfive years ago.It is for these reasons the new
health care law is completelymisnamed. Obamacare was notcreated by Obama alone, justask the guy from MIT. And it isneither easily accessible nor is itaffordable. That’s why the new health
care law should be called bythe more descriptive acronym,L.A.M.E., which stands for LessAccessible More Expensive.

Buying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it isone of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself
and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account.Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now andin the years ahead.
1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is areflection of your personality and can be an extension of your life-style. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curbappeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider archi-tectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping.Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding colorfor a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementarycolor combinations developed by the color professionals at JamesHardie: www.jameshardie.com/pdf/colorplus-color-combinations.pdf.
2. Is your home protected from environmental elements?Withtoday’s ever-changing climate, extreme weather is a reality in allcorners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind andwildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect yourhome. Consider your options carefully. Vinyl siding can melt andwood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engi-neered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding thatwill stand up to weather conditions in your area.
3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Greenbuilding is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficienthome can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills.By choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficientmaterial, you’re consuming less energy and reducing your environ-mental footprint.
4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting orbuying a home made with low-maintenance building materials canlower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent themaltogether. Wood siding and trim requires frequent repainting orreplacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durableand longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need forrepairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty isa great way to maximize and protect your investment.

FREDDIE MAC
Another Strong Year for Freddie Mac Multifamily SecuritiesMCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Jan 6, 2015) - Freddie
Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) Multifamily further reduced
taxpayer risk in 2014 by selling the overwhelming ma-
jority of credit risk on the mortgages it purchased to
private capital investors through its Multifamily K-Deal
securitization program. There were 21 Multifamily
securities offerings in 2014 for a total transactions
volume of $22.4 billion which, in addition to K-Deals,
included a small volume of other securities, including
the company’s Q- and M-Deals.
2014 Highlights:
Continued to support affordable rental housing
through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of
the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are afford-
able to households earning up to the area median
income, and most of those loans are securitized.
Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securi-
tized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the
program started in 2009, backing approximately $79
billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in
unguaranteed certificates.
Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates
that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans
not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of orig-
ination but that meet the company’s current under-
writing standards. Q Certificates were introduced this
fall.
Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by
$747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are
fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities
supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and
taxable multifamily housing collateral.
Grew the private investor base to more than 140
domestic and international investors. Typical investors
are life insurance companies, banks, pension funds,
money managers and hedge funds, some of whom
assume first loss positions, reducing taxpayer risk.
Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate
and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.
Quotes from Mitchell Resnick, vice president of
Freddie Mac Multifamily Capital Markets:
“The K-Deal program has become the benchmark
for Agency CMBS. 2014 was our second largest year
for securities issuance and we now have just short of
$100 billion in K Certificates outstanding. This year
we also issued Q and M Certificates, adding variety to
the investment opportunities for our customers. Part
of the reason for our success is the exceptional credit
performance of our collateral. At the end of the year,
total K-Deal delinquencies amounted to 1 basis point.”
“The multifamily market is healthy and we expect
to issue approximately $25 billion in multifamily secu-
rities across 17 to 20 K-Deals next year. Also, in 2015
we expect to introduce a few new types of collateral
to our securitizations, including 10-year floaters and
small balance loans.”

Local duo providing laughs, lessons with improv studio
WHEATON – Next timeyou’re in downtown Wheatonlate on a Friday or Saturdaynight, don’t be surprised if youhear the sounds of laughter onFront Street.
Those chuckles are thework of the Westside ImprovStudio.
Created by longtime im-provisers Jeff Ash of Glen El-lyn and Brendon Culhane ofWheaton, the new studio ina small, underground roomat 123 W. Front St. is offeringtwice-weekly improv shows, aswell as classes.
Both have proven to be a hitsince starting in December.
“It happened so organical-ly and so quickly, I can’t eventell you how amazed I’ve been,”Ash said.
When Ash moved to DuPageCounty in late 2013 after sev-eral years in Los Angeles, hethought his dream of startingan improv theater was all butdead.
Then, six months ago hewas introduced to Culhane, who facilitates an improvgroup at Wheaton College.
The two became fast friends, and one day last fall, Ash said,he found the Front Street spaceand fell in love.
Several coats of black paintlater, the duo’s about 70-seatstudio was born.
Their mission is two-fold,Ash said.
“We both love to teach, andwe knew that was going to bekey in anything we did,” hesaid. “But we also want thisplace to be performance-drivenand give opportunities for peo-
ple to get stage time.”The two offer a free session
for beginners Tuesday nightsand two different advancedclasses throughout the week.
“What we can teach you ishow to be a good improviser ...and take you where you’re atand sharpen your skills,” hesaid. “There are a lot of folkswho have been taught at a lotof the bigger theaters who arehere now working with us andreally enjoying it.”
One beginner student whostarted at one of the free class-es has already been slotted tobe in a player’s workshop showJan. 17, Ash said.
To supplement their houseplayers, Westside has focusedon incorporating area improvgroups.
Ash said great content forlow prices will help them build
a brand the community cantrust.
“I want them to get their$5 worth,” he said. “I want thequality to be such that ... people[will] never be afraid to investin our product.”
So far, this approach hasbeen successful – classes arefull and expanding fast, andboth of last weekend’s showswere at capacity. Ash also saidhe appreciates being in an envi-ronment like Wheaton, wherefamily-friendly entertainmentis encouraged.
“I looked at it as sort of anopportunity for us to promotea smart brand of comedy thatdoes not need to be dirty,” hesaid.

Sitting 12 rows up from thefield, Glenbard West footballcoach Chad Hetlet got a first-hand look at former HilltopperTommy Schutt and his currentOhio State teammates Jan. 1 atthe Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
After the Buckeyes emergedwith a 42-35 victory against Al-abama, Schutt is set to becomethe second Glenbard Westgraduate in three years to bea part of the national champi-onship game. That contest isscheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mon-day in Arlington, Texas, withOregon as the opponent.
Chris Watt also accom-plished the feat as a Notre Dameoffensive lineman when theIrish played Alabama in 2013.
“I’m just super proudof those guys,” Hetlet said.“We’ve been lucky to coachguys of that caliber and it’scool to see how they’ve han-dled it. Both are humble dudes.
“Talking to Tommy afterthe game, he said it was kindof surreal, that it didn’t seemreal. To reach that level in col-lege football is so hard.”
Schutt, a junior defensivelineman, has appeared in 11games this season and hastotaled nine tackles and onetackle for a loss.
“It was great to see himaround other Ohio Stateguys,” Hetlet said. “It was justlike high school, everybodyloves Tommy, all the playerslove him. He’s always beenthat lovable character. And hehas worked extremely hard.”
Jeremy Cordell, the headfootball coach at Glenbard Southfor five years before recentlyaccepting a job at Lincoln-WayCentral, was the defensive co-ordinator at West when Schuttplayed in the 2009 state champi-onship game as a sophomore.
Along with Schutt, Cord-ell will get to watch anotherformer player in a prominentgame when Illinois State playsin the Football ChampionshipSubdivision championshipgame Saturday against three-time defending champ NorthDakota State.
Kyle Avaloy, a 2012 Glen-bard South grad, is the startingleft guard for the Redbirds inhis redshirt sophomore season.
“It’s exciting to see theseguys have that opportunity,”Cordell said. “It’s exciting towatch as a coach.”
Avaloy saw action in fourgames in 2013 after redshirtinghis first year on campus.
“Talking to their coaches, they are big on him,” Cordellsaid. “He is a cornerstone ofwhat they do upfront. He’s thenicest kid you will ever meet.He will do anything for any-body. And he’s an extremelyhard worker. For us, he reallyset the tone for what we want-
ed to do at South.“In the semifinal against
New Hampshire, they had afourth and 1 with a couple ofminutes left. They went for it toseal the game and ran right be-hind Kyle. I thought it was pret-ty cool that they dialed up hisnumber on that crucial play.”
The game will be played at12:05 p.m. in Frisco, Texas. TheRedbirds went 10-1 during theregular season before knock-ing off Northern Iowa, EasternWashington and New Hamp-shire in the playoffs.
Former Glenbard Weststandout Kane Keirnan, a 2008grad, also is an assistant coachon offense for ISU.

Santaromita: Do you think itwas a good tournament for youguys overall?
Jordan: Yeah, it’s hardto lose a one-point game toDePaul Prep in overtime, but
going 3-1 in this tough tourna-ment is good for us. We werehoping to go as far as we can,but 3-1 in this type of tourna-ment is really good.
Santaromita: What’s it likeplaying four games in five days?
Jordan: It brings me back tomy middle schools days andAAU type stuff. It’s hard onthe body, but it’s fun to play alot of basketball and just playgames.
Santaromita: Does that bringanything out of the team beingaround each other more often?
Jordan: Yeah, it definitelyhelps morale. We all have tostick together through all this.Four games, who knows whatcan happen?
Santaromita: Heading intothe new year, what are you guyshoping to do the rest of the way?
Jordan: We have the restof our conference [schedule]left. We’re hoping to keepgoing with that and just keepimproving as a team and keepplaying our basketball.

ELMHURST – Closing outgames has been an issue thisseason for the relatively young, inexperienced Glenbard Southboys basketball team.
But on Tuesday night inElmhurst, the Raiders putforth a complete performance, jumping out to a big lead andmaintaining it in a 76-45 MetroSuburban conference win overIC Catholic.
“That was probably ourmost complete performancejust because we were ableto finish,” Glenbard Southcoach Wade Hardtke said.“We’ve played some goodgames against Downers GroveNorth and Oak Forest, we justweren’t able to finish.
“I was impressed. Up to thispoint, we’ve been kind of hav-ing those lulls where we playnot to lose instead of playingto win and we pushed throughthat.”
Utilizing a full-court press, the visitors forced 28 turn-overs for the contest. Thatpressure defense helped openup a 25-8 advantage after onequarter and that margin wasextended to 48-27 by halftime.
“That [the press] certainlyhelped us start things off andget momentum going,” Hardt-ke said.
Glenbard South was ex-tremely balanced in its scor-ing output as nine differentplayers registered points inthe first half alone. Tyler Scotttopped the Raiders with 13points, seven rebounds and
three steals, Billy Bair posted10 points and Charlie Bair con-tributed nine points, five re-bounds and two blocked shots.
Povilas Riauba, Kyle Car-li and Jonny Gutierrez hadeight points apiece and TylerSchutte finished with seven.
“We got into a little bit offoul trouble there,” the coachsaid. “And we had to go deepinto the bench and the guyswere able to respond.”
Glenbard South was com-
ing off a 47-44 loss to Marmionon Jan. 3 in which the Raidersled virtually the entire way be-fore being outscored 13-4 in thefourth quarter. Scott had 11points and Charlie Bair scored10.
Before that, the team went1-3 at the Romeoville Christ-mas tournament, notching a74-58 win over Chicago Chris-tian. They will be back in ac-tion tonight when they hostRiverside-Brookfield.

GlenbardWest nearly knocks off highly touted St. Charles EastBy JAY SCHWAB
GLEN ELLYN – The Hill-toppers’ upset bid came upjust short Tuesday night in St.Charles.
Returning to game actionafter a nine day layoff, theGlenbard West boys basketballteam nearly ended St. CharlesEast’s long winning streakbefore falling 61-58 in the non-conference affair.
The Saints, who extend-ed their unbeaten run to 11games, took the lead for good
on a driving basket by ColeGentry with 51 seconds leftthat made the score 57-56.
The Hilltoppers’ tandemof guard Alex Passi and for-ward Justin Pierce proved to
be a handful.Passi’s layup after Glen-
bard West beat East’s pressgave the Hilltoppers theirfinal lead, 56-55, with 1:29 togo.
Coach Tim Hoder was frus-trated with his team’s missedchance at the upset.
“When you have a team inposition where you can wina game, you’ve got to makesome plays down the stretchand win the game,” Hodersaid.
“I think we’re getting out-muscled a little bit. It’s going
to come down to a play or two, grabbing a loose ball, squeez-ing a rebound, taking a charge. It seems like those are theplays we’re not making at theend of games.”
Passi finished with 20points and four rebounds andPierce totaled 17 points andseven rebounds. Aidan Gouldadded eight points and sevenrebounds.
