GE Measurement & Control RotoArray TM The RotoArray is a por table, manually operated, phased array, ultrasonic inspection device which can be connected to any suitable phased array aw detection instrument to allow rapid scanning oa wide variety omaterials and components. Well suited or scanning composite and aluminum aerospace components, the RotoArray can provide A, B & C-scan images that are achieved with the simplicity oa handheld probe and with perormance rivaling that oa ull immersion C-scan system. The RotoArray can complement or replace immersion scanning systems in a manuacturing environment, while being equally unctional inspecting in the eld or laboratory . It is ideal or scanning aircrat on the ground or collision damage, post-repair and other inspections. The Power oan Immersion C-Scan System in the Palm oYour Hand

The compact and lightweight RotoArray can be conguredor let or right hand operators. The RotoArray consists o alinear, 64 element ultrasonic array contained within a tire, which is infated with a fuid to create a fexible couplingchamber between the array and the test piece. The tire istted within a scanning cart and the complete assembly isrolled along the surace to be inspected to scan or faws, delaminations, or other discontinuities. An innovativedirect-drive magnetic encoder, which operates without belts, pulleys or gears, provides positional data and is connected toa phased array faw detector, such as GE’s Phasor XS, whichdisplays and stores the results. A panel o three switches
with associated cables is available to remotely operateeatures such as “scan-start”, ”scan- stop”, “scan-clear”,and “scan-index” on suitably equipped instruments.

The rst standard versions o the RotoArray scanningplatorm are designed primarily or the inspection o aerospace materials such as composite and aluminum, although the platorm can be used or faw detection andthickness measurement in a wide range o materials.GE will continue to support and nurture urther potentialapplications as they are identied.
Composite and aluminum materials nd their majorapplication in the aerospace sector, where strength-weightratios are o great importance. The automotive sector isalso making increasing use o composite structures andassemblies.
The RotoArray can be used or inspection during
manuacturing as well as or the inspection o damage o aircrat in service.
In manuacturing, the RotoArray can be used as analternative to existing immersion inspection systems.Examples include inspection o smaller parts and specialparts, or to quickly re-scan areas o interest, which wouldnormally require extensive set-up in an immersion system. Also, it can be used on the fight-line to inspect aircratwhich have been damaged in slight collisions, or examplewith baggage carts. In either case, the inspector canobtain reliable and meaningul inspection data to allow the
correct decisions to be made regarding the disposition o the part or aircrat.

and Structures
Typical RotoArray Applications
• Inspection o composite plates, stieners and cylinders tocheck or delaminations, porosity, disbonds, etc.
• Providing complementary inspection or composite panels
that have holes through which bubbler or squirter watercan leak causing couplant problems
• Providing enhanced capabilities to scan rom the “rougherside” o composites
• Inspection o composite wind turbine blades
• Inspection o composite aerospace structures, both duringmanuacture and in service
• Inspection o some components which are conventionallyinspected by immersion/bubbler systems
• Inspection o aluminium aircrat skins and other metalstructures or corrosion
• Inspection or faws and corrosion in various metals• Utilizing the fexible rolling core o the RotoArray as the
scanning head in automatic and semi-automaticscanning systems.
