Enrollment eligibility for retired service members• Most retirees are eligible for dental coverage.
• Premiums are paid post-tax.
• Initial enrollment allowed within 31 days prior to and up to 60 days after military retirement.
• If you miss the initial enrollment window, you will have to wait until Federal Open Season to enroll; coverage would then begin January 1.
• No dual FEDVIP enrollment allowed. Cannot be enrolled in FEDVIP as a federal employee and retired service member.
Check eligibility and enroll at benefeds.com or call BENEFEDS at 877.888.3337
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Enrollment eligibility is slightly different for retired service members and dependents than they are for federal civilian employees. You can enroll within 31 days of retirement or up to 60 days after retirement. If you miss the initial enrollment window, you’ll have to wait until November to enroll during the Federal Open Enrollment period and your coverage would then start on January 1. You are NOT allowed to have double FEDVIP coverage. Meaning you cannot be enrolled as both a federal civilian employee or retiree, while also being enrolled as a retired service member. You can check your eligibility and enroll at benefeds.com or call Benefeds at 877.888.3337
Eligibility for retired service members’ spouses and eligible dependents• Spouses and eligible dependents may enroll
without the sponsor having to enroll if one of three criteria apply:
• The sponsor is receiving Veterans Affairs (VA) dental services
• The sponsor has dental insurance through their employer that doesn't cover family members
• The sponsor is unable to receive dental services due to a medical or dental condition
Dependents of retired service members are eligible until age 21; full-time students are eligible until age 23.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Enrollment eligibility is slightly different for retired service members and dependents than they are for federal civilian employees. Spouses and eligible dependents can enroll without the sponsor having to enroll if one of the three criteria listed here apply. If the sponsor receives VA dental services or if the sponsor has dental insurance through work but it doesn’t cover family members, or the sponsor is unable to receive dental benefits due to medical or dental condition. Other important difference from civilian federal eligibility is that dependents are eligible until age 21, and full-time students are eligible until age 23.
Orthodontic treatment for adults and children• Orthodontic services for dependents previously
started under the Tricare Dental Program (TDP) will be covered for ongoing Orthodontic care under GEHA’s High Dental plan only
• High dental has no waiting period for orthodontic treatment
• Standard dental has a 12-month waiting period
• GEHA High and Standard both offer adult & child orthodontia
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Normally, GEHA would not cover orthodontic services previously started with another carrier. However, dependents of retiring Tricare Dental Program enrollees who are enrolled in GEHA High Option are covered for continuing their orthodontic treatment that was started under Tricare. Something that is a little different than Tricare Dental is that many of the FEDVIP dental plans provide coverage for adult orthodontic treatment, including GEHA’s High and Standard Option.
