Background

GeezaBreakisavoluntaryorganisationprovidingRespiteandSupportServicestofamilieswhomeetthereferralcriteria.Theserviceisintendedtobeshort-term,flexiblesupporttofamiliesexperiencingstress,crisisorisolation.

GeezaBreakprovidesaRespiteandSupportServiceswithintheNorthEastCHPandcitywide.

TheserviceismanagedbyalocalBoardofDirectorswhohaveoverallresponsibilitytoensuretheserviceismeetingitstargets,providingaqualityserviceandsecuringfundingforcontinuityofservicestoourclients.

What We Do

GeezaBreakprovidesfamilysupportandflexiblerespiteservicestoparentswithchildrenaged0-16yearswhoareexperiencingaddiction,stress,crisisand/orisolation.

Alargepartofourworkisprovidingrespitecarethroughthefollowinginterventions.

Respite Care Service (Family Based)

ChildrenarecaredforatthehomesofcarefullyselectedandvettedRespiteCarers.Inthemain,childrenarecaredforovernightonaplannedbasisandinemergencysituations.RespiteCarersarevolunteers.In2013GeezaBreakrecruitedapaidRespiteCarertocomplimentexistingservices.

Respite Sitter Service (Home Based)

ChildrenarecaredforintheirownhomebyRespiteSitterswhoareemployedbytheorganisationonasessionalbasis.Inthemain,careisprovidedintheeveningsandatweekendswhenotherchildcareservicesareunavailable.

Centre Based Respite (T.O.F.F.E.E. Club)

ChildrenarecaredforwithinexistinglocalresourcesduringnormalofficehoursthroughtheT.O.F.F.E.E.Club.Primaryschoolchildrenaged5-12yearsarecaredforduringthe2weekEasterHolidayperiod,theSummerSchoolHolidayperiodand1weekduringtheOctoberHolidayperiod.TheserviceisdeliveredinpartnershipwithEastEndMobilePlayTeamtoprovideactivitiesthatmeettheindividualneedsofchildrenreferred.

Activity Based Respite - Geeza Chance

TheYoungPerson’sSupportWorkerwillbefriendyoungpeopleaged8-14yearsandprovideinformalonetoonesupportandgroupwork,theworkerwillalsoaccompanyyoungpeopletofree/lowcostclubsandactivitiesintheirlocalareasothattheymakenewfriendsandfeellessisolated.Thisserviceisforkinshipfamilies.

Second Generation (Kinship Care)

ThroughthedeliveryoftheKinshipCareProject,GeezaBreakoffersrespitetoGrandparentsandrelativescaringforchildrenasaresultofparentaladdiction.

Family Support Service

Thisisanintensespecialisedone-to-oneandgroupsupportwhichisofferedtofamiliesexperiencingpoverty,abuse,isolation,addiction,crisissituationsand/ormentalhealthissues.ParentsareenabledtoincreasetheirconfidenceandparentingskillsthroughindividualandgroupworksessionsprovidedbyateamoffullyvettedandtrainedFamilySupportWorkers.TheFamilySupportWorkersprovideasupportandmentoringserviceandencouragetheuptakeandaccesstolocalservicesthatmeetwiththefamily’sindividualneeds.OurFamilySupportWorkershaveagoodknowledgeofwhatisavailableineachcommunitytolinkvulnerablefamiliesinto.TheFamilySupportWorkersoffergroupworktoparents/carersincluding:TripleP(PromotingPositiveParenting),CookingSkillsonabudget(GetCooking–GetShopping),PositivePlayforFamilies,InfantBabyMassageandadropinfacilityforParents/CarersinTheChurchofNazerene,BurgherStreet,ParkheadonFridaymorningstoaccessservices,informationandLifeSkills.

Theorganisationduring2012wasinvolvedwithimprovingandstreamliningitsinternalstructureandreportingthroughthedesign,developmentandimplementationofabespokedatabase.Wearepleasedtoannouncethatthisdatabaseisnowliveonoursystemandtheorganisationcancurrentlyproduceaprofileoftheparentsandchildrenreceivingaserviceincludingthedemographicinformatione.g.dateofbirth,address,ethnicityandfamilystructureetc.offamilieswhoreceivealloranyofourservices.

Wecanalsoproducereportsperfunderofallserviceswhichhavebeenprovidedtochildrenandfamiliesfromspecificfundingstreams.Thisdatabasewillenhanceourabilitytodemonstrateoutcomesandincreaseouraccountabilitytofunders.Thedatabasewillcontinuetoevolvealongwithourservices.

TheBigLotteryproject‘MakingConnectionsforFamiliesinNeed’reachedtheendofitsfirstfullyearon30September2012.ThisprojecthasnotonlymetbutexceededitstargetsforthefirstyearandwewouldliketothanktheSeniorFamilySupportWorkerandtheLotteryCo-ordinatorfortheircommitmentandhardworkduringthisfirstyear.

TheMakingConnectionsforFamiliesinNeedprojectlaunchedanewapproachtothewaythatweworkwithourfamilies.GeezaBreakhaslearnedthattheholisticapproachtosupportingafamilywithmultidisciplinarystaffworkingwithchildrenandadultsin

parallel,andattimestogether,iseffectiveandvaluedbyfamilies.Theindicationssofarfromthisworkwithchildrentoenhancetheirhealthandwellbeingoutcomes,ismoreeffectiveifreinforcedbyworkingwithparentstoaddresstheirneedsandhelpthemrecognisehowtheycanmakeadifferencetotheirchildren’sfuture.

TheGreaterGlasgowandClydeNHS3yearcontractforintensivespecialisedFamilySupportalsoreachedtheendofitsfirstfullyearduring12/13financialyear.ThisprojectalsoexceededitstargetsforthefirstyearandwewouldliketothankthetwoparttimeandonefulltimeFamilySupportWorkersforalltheirhardworkandcommitmentwhichhasmadethisprojectsuchasuccess.

CattanachCharitableTrustfundingwasawardedinMarch2012.Theawardwasfor1yeartocoverthecostsofaparttimeFamilySupportWorkerpostplusoverheadcosts.IntensiveFamilySupportunderthisfundingstartedinApril2012.Thereisanopportunitytoapplyforafurtheryearscost.TheRSMacdonaldfundingwasawardedinJune2012fortwoyears.IntensiveFamilySupportunderthisfundingstartedinSeptember2012.

AlltheFamilySupportWorkershaveundertakenvarioustrainingcoursesduringthecourseof12/13suchasTripleP,TeensTriplePandBabyMassage.Thiswillmeanthatduring13/14theFamilySupportWorkerswillbeabletorungroupsinthese.

During12/13,twoRespiteSitterslefttheorganisationbutweweresuccessfulinrecruitingfiveadditionalRespiteSitterswhichattheendofMarch13gaveGeezaBreakabankoftwentyRespiteSitters.threeVolunteerRespiteCarershavesuccessfullycompletedtheSocialWorkServicesCompetencyBasedAssessmentprocessandwillbegoingtotheScreeningPanelinMay13.RespiteCare

TheorganisationhasbeenveryfortunateinsecuringforrentalfromParkheadHousingAssociationtheold‘GlasgowSavingsBank’buildingintheGallowgateatParkheadCross.Thishasbeenthemajorchallengeof2012.Wemovedintoournewpremiseson3rdAugust2012.

Oneofthepositivesaboutournewlocationistheaccessibilityoftheservicebasetothelocalcommunityandwehopetoprovideawelcomingandcomfortablespacewherewecanmeetandworkwithfamiliesingroupsettingsoronetoone.

AnOpenDay,whichwasagreatsuccess,washeldattheendofAugust.WewereprivilegedthatnotonlydidElaineCSmithagreetoofficiallyopenournewpremisesbutshealsoagreedtobecomeourPatron.Wewouldliketogiveheragreatbigthanksforthishonour.

AlthoughwehaveexperiencedmanydifficultiesinournewofficesthesehaveallbeenovercomethankstothetenacityofallthestaffandwearenowwellsettledinandenjoyingthelovelyRennieMacKintoshfeaturesandtheadditionalspaceofournewlocation.

GeezaBreak’sserviceswereinspectedduringOctober2012bytheCareInspectorateandwereawardedthefollowingratings:-threeExcellentsandthreeVeryGoods,whichgaveanoverallawardofVeryGood.

offersexcellentexperienceforpeoplewhoareinterestedingoingforwardtobeRespiteCarers.

Asinpastyearstheorganisationwillcontinuetoensurethatserviceefficiencyandeffectivenessiscontinuallymonitoredasfollowsinorderto:-

• Maintainbudgetsandreduceoverheadcostswherepossible

• Increaseaccountabilitytofundersthroughnewaccountingpractices

• Monitor,manageandplanservicedeliveryacrossallourfunderskeepingservicedeliverywithinourallocatedfundingbudget

• AccuratelyextractdatafromthenewbespokeDatabase• Improvewaysofassessingnewvolunteercarers• Evaluatestress/anxietyinparentsbeforeandafter

InFebruary2013GeezaBreakwasprivilegedtobeselectedasafinalistfortheTeamAwardattheEveningTimesCommunityChampionsEastAwards.ThisgavetheorganisationmuchwelcomedpublicitywiththeeventextensivelycoveredintheEveningTimespaperaswellastheEveningTimeswebsite.Unfortunately,wewerenotselectedastheoverallwinnerfortheTeamAwardbuttheteamfelthonouredatbeingselectedasfinalistsandalreadyfeltlikewinners.

During12/13theorganisationreneweditscertificatefortheISO9001qualitystandard.

OurtwoRespiteCo-ordinatorssuccessfullycompletedtheirSVQ4HealthandSocialCareChildrenandYoungPeople.Thiswasamajorachievementasthecoursewascompletedwhilecontinuingtoworkfulltime.

WehaverecentlyintroducednewevaluationpaperworkwhichwillbecompletedbytheRespiteCo-ordinators,RespiteProvidersandfamiliesattheinitialassessmentfortheservice,reviewsoftheserviceandagainonclosureoftheservice.Thisnewpaperworkwillallowtheorganisationtomeasuretheagreedaims/outcomesagainsttheachievedoutcomesofeachservicethatthefamilyreceived.

WehavedevelopedcompetencybasedassessmentsfortheRespiteProviders.ThisenhancedassessmentwillenableustofocusmorecloselyonareasofimprovementforRespiteCarers/Sitters,thusincreasingonoverallqualityofcareandsupport.

Wehavealsoenhancedourmultilingualwebsitebyincludinganeducationalportalforstafftopickuponinformationsuchasmentalhealthissues,challengingbehavioursandsoon.

InFebruary2013GeezaBreaklaunchedtheTheGeezaChanceProjectforKinshipfamiliesfundedbyYoungStartwhichwillaimtohelpyoungpeoplefeelbetteraboutthemselves.WeadvertisedandrecruitedoneparttimeSupportWorker(20hoursperweek)whowillbefriendyoungpeopleaged8-14yearstoprovideinformal,onetoonesupportandgroupworkprimarilyfocusingonangermanagement,self-harm,alcohol,drugs,friendships,buildingconfidenceandfeelinglessisolated.

TheGeezaChanceprojectwilloperateGlasgowwideandwilltakeplacebetween4and8pmonweekdaysandduringthedayatweekendsbutwillbemoreflexibleduringschoolholidaystomeettheneedsofindividualyoungpeople.

Financial Review

Thecharitymadeasurplusof£65,910duringtheyear,thiscompareswith£81,438forthepreviousyear.IncomehasincreasedasthefirstfullyearoftheBigLotteryProjecttookeffect.MostoftheStatutoryFunderscontinuedtosupportthecharitywithgrantsincreasinginsomecases.Finallyourfundraisingteamhavebeenworkingtobringinsignificantandvariedamountsoffunding,whichhasincreasedoverallfromlastyear.Thishasbeendoneatadifficulttimeforthethirdsectorwithfundinggettingmoredifficulttoachieve.

Withtheincreaseintheactivitiesofthecharitytheexpenditurehasincreasedto£642,086.Theincreasecanbeaccountedfor

duetoincreasedstaffandcarerscostsalongwithanincreaseintheassociatedsupportcosts.

Duringtheyearthecharitymovedtomoresuitablepremises,howeversomeworkstillneedstobedoneandthereremains£11,278inthepremisesreserveattheyearend.DuetotheincreaseintherunningcoststheTrusteeshaveincreasedthedesignatedreserves(tocoverthreemonthscoreactivityexpenses)to£135,000.Inaddition£8,000hasbeendesignatedbytheTrusteesfornewITequipment.Finally,theTrusteeshaveconsidereditprudenttodesignateafurther£20,000towardsredundancycostsgiventhecurrenteconomicclimateandon-goingfundingissueswithinthethirdsector.

Future Plans

AsstatedearlierinthereportthreeRespiteCarerssuccessfullycompletedtheSocialWorkServicesCompetencyBasedAssessmentprocessandwentforwardtotheScreeningPanelinMayofthisyear.Allthreeweresuccessfulandhavenowstartedtheinductionprocess.OneoftheseRespiteCarerswillbeafulltimeworkerratherthanavolunteerandwillwork5daysoutof7eachweekprovidingintenseplannedovernightpackagesofsupporttoourvulnerableclients.

Theorganisationwillfocusonthetrainingandre-trainingofstaff(tokeepthemupdatedwithchangesinthecaresector)byattendingcoursestoimprove/develop/enhanceserviceswithintheorganisation,thusleadingtomaximumclientsatisfaction.Wewillfacilitatepersonalgrowthbyeducatingcarersonrelatedtopicssuchasattachmenttheoryinbabiesandyoungchildren;firstaid;TriplePparentingstrategies;andeffectivecommunication.

Duringthelastyear,aswellasconsideringbudgets,communication,client’ssatisfactionsurveys,andincreasingefficiency;theBoardofDirectorshavedevotedtimetoexaminewhatwearedoingsuccessfullyandwhatareasweneedtofocusoninthecomingyear.Thearea’sthatwewillfocusonfor2012/2013are:

Ourflexibilityplaysabigpartinourservicedeliveryaswefocusonclient’sneeds.Beingavailable24/7throughourintensivesupporttoourclientshighlightsouruniqueness,allowingour

TwoadditionalmembersofstaffwillbeworkingtowardsanSVQ4inHealthandSocialCare.

During2010aSocialReturnonInvestmentReportwasproducedwhichshowedthatourservicesgavegoodvalueformoney.Theprojectcanberegardedasverysuccessfulandmeetingtheneedsofitstargetaudienceinacosteffectivemannergeneratinganaverageof£277per£1spentoverthetwoyearsunderstudy.During2013/14theorganisationplanstoproduceanupdatedSocialReturnonInvestmentReport.

Theorganisationwillalsobeduring13/14updatingitsSageAccountingSystemtoSage50Accounts2013andredesigningandupdatingtheGeezaBreakwebsite.

ItisourintentiontorunapilotparentsdropinadvicecentrestartinginAugust2013andrunningfor16weekstoDecember2013.WewillinvitevariousspeakerstocomealongandtalkabouttheWelfareReformBenefits,employability,housing,heatingandsafetyinthehome.GroupssuchasBabyMassage,TripleP,ConfidenceBuildingandLivingSkillswillbedeliveredatthisadvicecentre.

AsweareheadingintoourlastyearoffundingfromTheBigLotteryFundwehopeduringthisyeartosubmitanewapplicationtoTheBigLotteryFundforafurther3yearsfundingfor‘MakingConnectionsforFamiliesinNeed’.

Asinpastyearstheorganisationwillcontinuethegoodworkundertaken,consolidatingthefinancialpositionandseekingtoincreasetheservicewherefundspermit.

In Conclusion

Thisyearwehavefacedchallengessuchas:-

• Sustainabilityduetothefinancialuncertaintieswhichareaffectingallcharities

• Managingthedemandsforserviceswithinallocatedbudgets• Movingpremiseswhilekeepingallservicesoperational

Wewillcontinuetoachieveouraimsandoutcomesforourclientsbyensuringappropriatestandardsoftraining(basicandon-going),supportandsupervision,generaloperationalpractice,communication,administrationandmanagementaremaintained.Wewillcontinuetoimproveourreportingthroughtheon-goingdevelopmentofourbespokedatabasewhichwillenhanceourabilitytodemonstrateoutcomesandincreaseaccountabilitytofunders.

Inthisverychallengingyearwehavelearnedalotandachievedmuchunderdifficultcircumstances.WehopeinthecomingyeartogofromstrengthtostrengthandtobeaserviceofchoiceforclientsintheNorthEastofGlasgow.

clientstofeelempowered,havingpositivevaluesandsupporttoallowourclientstomakehealthylifechoices.Clientsareencouragedandbenefitfromskillstointeracteffectivelywithotherseitherthroughagroupsettingorasindividualswithinthelocalcommunity.

Wefindwithintensivesupportthisencouragesclientstocopebetterwithnewsituations,buildontheirconfidence,enhancetheircopingskillsandbelieveintheirownself-worth.

TheNorthEastofGlasgowwillbefacedwithsomechallengingtimesinthenextfewyearswiththeWelfareReformChangesanditisevenmoreimportantthatlocalorganisations,charities,andgroupsworktogethertosupportthemostvulnerableclientsthroughthesedifficulttimes.

Abigthankyoutothededicationandprofessionalismofourvolunteers,andthestaff,whoallmakeavaluablecontributiontoservicesandsupportsthatweoffertoourclients

AswellastheofficerelocatingfromShettlestontoParkheadCross,wehavehadanotherbusyyearassessingfamilies,co-ordinatingrespitesittingandrespitecaresessions,promotingourserviceswithinthelocalcommunityandarangeofotherjobrelatedtasksaswellasprovidingintensivesupport toourevergrowingpoolofexperiencedrespitesittersandcarers.Weinterviewedontwoseparateoccasionsthisyearandcarriedoutinductionsforsevennewrespitesittersatthestartof

Withinourrolesandresponsibilities,ourteamalsoworktowards:• MentoringandsupportingSocialWorkstudents• Fundraisingandorganisingevents• Establishingandmaintaininggoodcommunitylinks• Partnershipworkingwithamulti-agencyapproach• WorkingwithintheOneGlasgowFramework

InAugust2012wemovedintoournewpremisesgivingusamorecentrallocation.

InMay2013theorganisationwassuccessfulinachievingTheHealthyWorkingLivesBronzeawardandarenowworkingtowardstheSilveraward.

Thefutureislookingbrightfortheforthcomingyearandwearealllookingforwardtocontinuingprovidingsupporttoourfamiliesandseeingwhatthisyearbrings.

Ihaveputtogetheraself-containedinformationpackforserviceuserscontaininginformationonourservicesandpoliciesandhaveimprovedourpaperworksuchasreferralforms.IhaveproposedtheuseofMusicTherapyandJumpingClaybyRespiteProviderswithchildrenastheyareknowntohaveagreatpositiveimpactonchildren.

IimprovedthewebsitetoamoreuserfriendlyportalwherestaffcanlogintoaccessanE-LibraryofvariousMedicalConditions.

Thechallengesinthejobcoupledupwiththeexperiencedandprofessionalismofcolleagues,whomakemylearningprocessmuchmorelively;makesitallworthwhileworkingfortheorganisation.

Activity Based RespiteJayne Doherty (YoungPersonsSupportWorker)

IamJayneDohertyandIstartedwithGeezaBreakinFebruary2013asYoungPerson’sSupportWorkerforthenewGeezaChanceproject.Withabackgroundinchildcareforover10years,IamqualifiedtoSVQlevel3inChildrensCareLearningandDevelopment.ThisismyfirstjobinsocialcareandIhavefoundittobeattimesdifficultandfrustratingbutmostlyveryrewarding.Theprojectsupportsyoungpeopleaged8-14yearswhoareinkinshipcare,byprovidingthemwithactivitiesawayfromhome,whichalsoprovidesmuchneededrespiteforpermanentcarers.Theyoungpeoplegetthechancetosampledifferentactivitiesandchoosewhattheywanttotakepartin,theyshouldbytheendofthe12sessionshaveanewhobbyoractivitytocontinuewith.Theyalsogetachancetotakepartingroupworkshopsbasedonissuesthataffectthem.

IntheinitialweeksIhadtocreatepaperwork,docommunityresearchandfactfindinginordertoplantherespitesessions.InthefirstfourmonthsIhavesupportedsevenfamiliesandelevenchildren,thechildrenhavetakenpartinvariousactivitiesandaccessedlocalyouthgroupsswimmingpools,parksandvisitorattractions,includingthesciencecentre,riversidemuseum,bowling,iceskatingandcinema.Someofthemhavetakenpartinartsandcraftsessioninthelocallibraryandasciencefair.Thechildrentookpartingroupworkshopsoverthreesessions.Thesewere,confidenceandselfesteem,angermanagementandhappinessrestoration,andbuildingpositiverelationshipsandtrust.

TheT.O.F.F.E.E.Clubprovidesrespiteforyoungdisadvantagedchildrenexperiencingcrisisfamilysituations,suchaschaoticlifestyles.Thisisoftenduetotheirparent’saddictionsorwhocareforaparent/guardianwhomayhavementalhealthissues,adisabilityormisusedrugsand/oralcohol.

Theorganisationrecognisestheeffectthatthesekindsofsituationshaveonyoungchildrenfrombeingisolatedfromtheirfriendstonothavingmuchtimeforleisureactivities.TosupporttheseyoungchildrenGeezaBreakofferstheT.O.F.F.E.E.Clubwhichisacentrebasedresourcepredominantlyofferingplayactivitiesasanescapeduringtheschoolholidayperiod,allowingthechildrentobechildrenandenablinginteractionwithotherchildren.

ThroughtheT.O.F.F.E.E.Club,primaryschoolchildrenbetweentheagesof5and12yearsarecaredforduringschoolholidaysforan9weekperiod(twoweeksinEaster,sixweeksinSummerand1weekinOctober).TheT.O.F.F.E.E.Clubprovidesasafeandsupportedenvironmentforthechildrentoplay.

Whenchildrenplaytheyaredevelopingtheirphysicalfitness,co-ordination,abilitiestoreason,solveproblems,makenewfriendsanddevelopsocialskills.Theyarealsoformingrelationships,

GeezaBreakisconfidentthatourplayprovisionfosterschildren’sindependenceandself-esteemaswellasdevelopingchildren’srespectforothers.Ourplayprovisionsupportsthechildren’swell-being,healthygrowthandhelpsdevelopmentandincreaseknowledgeandunderstandingthatpromotescreativityandthecapacitytolearn.

Thechildrenplayandlearnthroughactivitiessuchasgym,football,dancing,dressingup,artsandcrafts,playingpool,boardgamesandWiigamessuchastennisandbowling.TheyalsohavevisitsfromtheCommunityPolice,FireBrigadeandtheZooLabwithsmallcreatures.Thechildrenalsohavequietareaswheretheyreadbooks,learnpuzzles,wordsearchesandvariouseducationalactivities.

WhenchildrenfirstattendtheT.O.F.F.E.E.Clubtheyareoftenshyandholdbackbutafterattendingafewsessionsandbeinginvolvedwithinteractingteamgamestheirconfidencegrowsandthisismeasuredbyvisuallywatchingtheirinvolvementintheactivities.Thechildrenmakefriendsandlearntoplayandshareandberespectfulofeachother.

Activities

Throughoutthesummerprogrammewehadplannedvariousthemeswhichwouldberunningthroughthesixweeks,fromaPiratethemetoWorldRecordbasedthemes.WealsotrytoincorporatemoreofaneducationalbasedthemeinourprogrammewhichincludedSci-Fi&PlanetsaswellasatripthroughtheCenturies.Wewerefortunateenoughtoaccess

moneywhichenabledustotakethechildrenonmuchneededtrips.SomeoftheplaceswemanagedtovisitweretiedinwiththespecificthemeswehadbeendoingfromweektoweeksuchasatriptoSummerleeHeritageParkwhichlinkedinperfectlywithourCenturiesbasedthemeandswimmingwhichtiedinwithourOlympictheme.TherewasalsoanoutingtoBlairDrummondSafariPark,cinemaoutingsandtripstoparks.

GeezaBreakdevelopedapartnershipwithKids&Co.whichenabledtheMobilePlayTeamtodeliverhealthysnacksoffruitandmilktothechildrenatSt.Anne’sandAultmoreParkeachdayoftheT.O.F.F.E.E.Club.KidsandCo.suppliedthefruitandmilkonaweeklybasisandGeezaBreakwillcontinuetoworkinpartnershipwiththemduringfuturesessions.

CentresintheEasterhouseareawereassessedandaftercarefulconsiderationitwasagreedthatAultmoreParkwasideallysuitedtotheneedsoftheT.O.F.F.E.E.Club.TherewerevariousreasonsthatAultmoreParkwaschosen.Firstly,thelocationwasidealasitwassituatedinthepreferredlocation(Easterhouse).AultmoreParkisalsoeasilyaccessibleasitisnotfarfromEdinburghRoadandthereareseveralbusroutesthatpassbyorneartowheretheschoolislocated.Goodaccesstoequipmentandstoragewasafactoraswasthesecuritysystemattheschool.

TheEasterHolidayswerethefirsteverholidayT.O.F.F.E.E.ClubperiodatAultmoreParkPrimarySchoolandweusedtheschoolagainfortheSummerHolidayClubwhichenabledGeezaBreaktoprovideafurther24placesperdayfortheSummerT.O.F.F.E.E.Club.TherewerenoconcernsoverAultmoreParkandtheMobilePlayTeamwasveryhappywiththestaffandassistancereceivedatAultmoreParkduringtheSummersession.

Out of School Services – City Wide

GeezaBreakalsoprovideplaceswithin24otherOutofSchoolServiceProvidersforchildrenwhoareunabletoattendeitherStAnne’sorAultmoreParkduetodistance.Aspartofourreviewofqualitystandards,announcedvisitswerecarriedout.Thesevisitsareanessentialpartofensuringthatthechildrenaregettingaqualityserviceinanenjoyable,relaxingatmosphereandasafe,secureandstimulatingenvironmentandarehappyandhavingfun.TheKinshipfamiliesreallybenefitfromthissupportduringtheschoolholidays.

Kinship Group VisitswerealsomadetoKinshipGroups.Grandparentsandextendedfamilymemberswhohavesolecareofchildrenthroughparentaladdiction,meetfortnightlytodiscussissuesandoffersupporttoeachother.ThepurposeofthevisitsweretointroduceourselvesandtoexplaintheservicesinmoredetailwhichGeezaBreakoffer.

Workingwithinbudgetsandconstantcommunicationwithfamiliesandprovidersisessentialtoensuringthatplacesarefilledandchildrenenjoytheexperience.

AttendanceofthechildrenhasbeenverygoodthisyearandasshownontheEvaluationForms,allhadagreattime.

KinshipCarersaredefinedasfamilymembersorclosefriendswhotakeonthesolecareofachild/childrenbecausethebirthparentsareunabletodoso.

TheaimoftheserviceistogiveKinshipCarersabreakfromtheirchildcareresponsibilitieswhileatthesametimeofferingapositiveandenjoyableexperienceforchildrenandyoungpeople.GeezaBreak&FASShavebeenprovidingrespiteandsupportservicestofamiliesforovertwentyoneyearsandarefullyawareoftheneedsofchildrenandfamilieswhohavebeenaffectedbyaddictionissues.FamiliesoutwiththeNorthEastofGlasgowcanchooseoneofthefollowingpreferredservices:

Centre Based Respite:ProvidedduringEaster,SummerandOctoberholidaysfromavarietyoflocalhalls/schoolsthroughoutthecity.Thisserviceisdeliveredinpartnershipwithotherregisteredchildcareproviderswhoareknowledgeableabouttheirareas–twotothreesessionsperweek.

Activity Based Respite: TheYoungPerson’sSupportWorkerprovidesahighqualityBefriendingservicetochildrenagedbetween8-14yearswhoarelookedafterbyKinshipCarers.Onetoonesupportandgroupworkareofferedbetween4–8pmonweekdaysandduringthedayatweekendsandschoolholidays.Theyoungpeopleareaccompaniedtolowcostlocalcommunityclubsandactivitiesovera12weekperiod.Theaimistoachievepositiveoutcomesfortheyoungpeopletomakebetterlifechoices,andimprovehealthandwell-being.

DevelopinganddeliveringtheservicehasalsoprovidedopportunitiestolearnaboutthemosteffectivewaystoworkwithvulnerablefamiliesexperiencingcrisisintheNorthEastofGlasgowandimprovetheirconfidence,parentingskillsandaspirations.TheprojecthasprovidedarangeofrespiteprovisionandsupportforeachofthefamilieswehaveworkedwithincludingRespiteSitting,RespiteCare,FamilySupportandT.O.F.F.E.E.Club.

Theprojecthaspiloted,aswellasadapted,currentGeezaBreakmethodsandapproachesofworkingwithvulnerablefamilieswhichhavesucceededinengaginganumberoffamiliesinawaywhichhasledtoprogresstowardspositiveoutcomes.

Althoughthelastyearhasbeenhardwork,withmanychallenges,weareveryproudoftheservicewehaveestablishedandthehelpandsupportthatthe‘MakingConnectionsforFamiliesinNeed’teamhaveofferedthefamilieswhousetheservice.

Weareconstantlylookingatwaystoimproveeveryaspectofthe‘MakingConnectionsforFamiliesInNeed’serviceandlookforwardtocontinueworkingwiththefamilieswhoneedit.

GeezaBreak’sgoalistoimprovethequalityoflifeforlocalvulnerablechildrenandfamiliesbyreducingstress,crisisandisolationthroughprovidingarangeofrespiteandsupportservices.Inrecentyears,communityandfamilylifehaschangedwithmanyparentshavinglittleornocontactwithotherfamilymembers,leavingbothparentsandchildrenextremelyisolatedandvulnerable,particularlyintimesofcrisis.ThisstressiscompoundeduponintheNorthandEastofGlasgow,whereGeezaBreakoperates.ThisarearemainsoneofthepoorestareasinScotlandwith7outof20ofthemostdeprivedareasinScotlandlocatedwithinit’sboundaries.

In2012,GlasgowhadthehighestpercentageofchildrenlivinginpovertyamongtheeightlocalauthoritiesofGlasgowandClydeValley.TheGlasgowrateof33%wasmorethanthreetimeshigherthaninEastDunbartonshireandEastRenfrewshire.ThisfigureisthehighestamongScotland’smajorcities;forexample,itismorethantwicetherateinAberdeenandalmostdoublethatofEdinburgh.

ThereareavarietyofproblemsconsistentwithmultipledeprivationincludinghighlevelsofunemploymentwithmanyparentsrelyingonJobSeeker’sAllowance,Incapacity/SevereDisabilityPay,ChildTax/PensionTaxCredits,and/oroutofworkbenefitstosurvive.TheestimatedpercentageofchildreninworklesshouseholdsinGlasgowin2012was22%.

InNovember2010moreboysthangirlsweresupportedbySocialWorkServicesacrossthewholecityofGlasgow.52%ofchildrensupported

Characteristics of Families and Services

wereboys,numbering5,401,and45%weregirls(4,711).ThisgendergapisapparentacrossthethreeSocialWorkAreaswithinGlasgow,ineachofwhichmoreboysthangirlsreceivedsupport.Glasgowconsistentlyhasarateofchildrenreferredthatismorethan50%higherthanthecomparableScottishrate.In2010/11Glasgow’srateof75childrenper1,000ofthepopulationis74%higherthantheScottishrateof43%.Glasgowhadmorethan3,500lookedafterchildrenat31stJuly2010-anumberfarhigherthananyotherlocalauthorityinthecountry.Thisequatesto3%ofthechildpopulation,thehighestrateofanyauthoritywithinScotlandandmorethandoubletheScottishaverageof1.4%.

MorechildreninGlasgow(43%)andacrossScotland(44%)areontheChildProtectionRegisterbecauseofphysicalneglectthanforanyotherreason.Relativelyfewareregisteredbecauseofsexualabuse(8%inbothGlasgowandScotland)andhardlyanybecauseoffailuretothriveorreasonsnotknown(1%forGlasgowonly).

Theproportionofchildrenlivinginhouseholdswithworkingageadults,whereatleastoneadulthasadisability,wasoneandahalftimeshigherinGlasgow(12%)thantheScottishaverage(8%)in2007/08.TheGlasgowfigurewasalsomorethandoublethatofAberdeen(4%)andEdinburgh(5%)andmarginallyhigherthanDundee(11%).Allfiguresquotedweretakenfromwww.understandingglasgow.com/indicators/children.

Experiencehasshownthatfamiliesarenotaffectedbyjustonesingleissue;theyhavemanyverycomplexdifficultiestodealwith.Thisincludes

Themainreasonsforreferralwereparentaladdictionsandmentalhealthproblemsandaneedforinputtohelpwithhouseholdmanagement,routinesandcaringskills.Alargenumberofthosereferredhadlowself-confidence,problematicfamilyrelationshipsandwerelackinginsocialsupports.

Formanyparentsdailylifewascharacterisedbydifficultiesassociatedwithpoverty,inadequateandinsecurehousingandastruggletoprovideemotional,socialandeducationalsupportfortheirchildren.Thiswasparticularlysoforparentswhoseownneedshadnotbeenmet,forwhomtherewaslittlesupportfromfamilyandfriendsandwhocouldseenoglimmerofhopeforawayoutoftheirdifficultiesforthemselvesortheirchildren.

Theextentofsomeparents’difficultieswassuchthatintensiveinputwasrequiredfromFamilySupportWorkersandstafffrompartnershipagenciesoveranextendedperiodoftimeinordertoaddresssomeoftheimpactoftheseproblems.
