January 2012
Let me start out by wishing everyone a very
Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
Each year brings new challenges and
excitement with it. Let’s hope its all good this
year.
I use the new year as a “birthday /
anniversary” date for the GAZZETTE. As I
have said before, what started out as some
emails sharing show info years ago, has grown
into what you now receive each month. One of
the Mid-South’s (and other area’s of the
country too) leading and fastest growing on-
line publications for hot rodders, motorheads,
gearheads and folks who just plain love cool
cars, trucks, kustoms and
all that goes with them.
I want to personally thank
each of you, for being
part of the GEARHEAD
GAZZETTE each month.
The GAZZETTE has
grown because of you and
most of the changes come
from your feedback.
For me, any publication should serve a
purpose. Some are for entertainment, some for
covering history, some for info purposes and
others for a whole host of reasons. For me and
the direction of the GAZZETTE, the core
purpose is to let you know where all the Car
Shows, Events, Cruise Nights and any and all
things related to this thing we love and devote
much of our lives to….HOT RODDING. This is
where our foundation is at and it will continue
to be our purpose. I throw in some other “fun”
stuff these days and event coverage too, just
to make the GAZZETTE more interesting for
you.
We have some other things on the drawing
board, but we’ll move slowly, adding content
only when it makes sense.
I do strive to make this entertaining and fun to
read. Your feedback tell me I am doing a good
job these days. I know you’ll let me know if I
take a wrong turn.
Lately I have thought about why I like doing this
deal called the GAZZETTE. I believe it comes
from my love of reading and learning.
When I was a little guy (LONG LONG time
ago!!) my mom started me reading at an early
age. She taught me the importance of being
able to read and understand what I was
reading. She took us to the
library to get books every
2 weeks. She built the
foundation for me, without
me ever knowing she was
doing it. This foundation
was important for me in
school obviously.
Books graduated to “car”
magazines in the pre-teen
years, as happened for many of us car crazy
types. Its still reading and learning and its all
good.
My mom lost her battle with lung cancer on
December 23rd. While she’s not here asking me
about the GAZZETTE anymore, I know she’s
right here checking it out to make sure I am
doing it right.
Thanks mom for building my foundation so
strong. All the readers of the GAZZETTE
appreciate your hard work many years ago with
a little guy.
A New Chapter Starts….
GET READY!!! One of the Mid-South’s favorite events will be back next month. The NASHVILLE AUTOFEST returns to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds on Jan 21st & 22nd. Make plans now to attend. All the info you need on this show is listed in the EVENTS Section of this issue. The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE will be there covering the whole event for a feature in a future issue. We’ll see ya there!!
And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!
OK all you BIG Horsepower freaks!!!
Here’s where you can put it to the test
and have the numbers to back up the
talk!! DBR Performance in Spring Hill TN
now has a DYNO in their shop. Having a
car show or gearhead event and want to
see who has the biggest H.P.?? DBR’s
DYNO is portable and they can bring it
to your event. Talk about some big
fun…Hey Cruise Nites are you
listening?? Give David a call and get all
the info you need or go to
www.dbrhighperformance.com
NEW FEATURE COMING!! The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE is excited
about a new feature / section that will be
coming in upcoming issues.
Sam Compton, one half of the “WORLD
FAMOUS” MOTHERS BROTHERS is going
to be a contributor to the GAZZETTE. He
will be sharing his vast knowledge and
experience on car care with all of us.
You’ve seen Sam and his brother at many
of the car shows and events across the
U.S. with their trailer full of “MOTHERS”
car care products. It’s not just the
products, it’s the know-how on what to do
with it, that makes the MOTHER’s
BROTHERS a great vendor.
Think you know it all about caring for your
prized ride?? Do you know what “plowing
the wax” is? Do you know why a
microfiber cloth is so much better than
what you are using today to polish / wax
your ride?
We’ll learn all about those 2 items and a
whole lot more in upcoming issue of the
GAZZETTE.
As an added bonus, Sam is going to work
with HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service
Hot Rod Shop, and set up a CAR CARE
Seminar session in the spring. Watch the
GAZZETTE for more on this event and how to be part of it.

And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!
The DEUCE turns 80!!!! To help celebrate the 80th birthday of the ’32 Ford and all 1932 model year vehicles, the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has announced that they will hold a special "Deuce Doins" at all 17 national events this 2012 season. What's a Deuce Doins’ you ask? It's a giant parking area exclusive to Fords and other makes built in 1932. Goodguys will supply a commemorative dash plaque as well as a exclusive decal to all participants in the 80th Anniversary Deuce Doins’. In addition Goodguys will hand out a special award that will be selected from the Deuce Doins’ area for the Sunday awards ceremony at each event. The Deuce Doins’ will be held on Saturday’s at all 17 from 7am to noon. Above all other cars, the ’32 Ford holds a special place in the heart of most rodders. “The ’32 Ford is the quintessential hot rod,” said Goodguys President Marc Meadors. “I grew up in the back seat of my dad’s ’32 sedan crisscrossing the country going to events,” he said. The Beach Boys immortalized the ’32 Ford with their hit single ‘Lil’ Deuce Coupe.’ The Majority of our industry’s founding fathers were connected to a ’32 Ford or Chevy somehow. Its only fitting we honor this historic model year at our 2012 events.” All you 32’ owners get em’ ready to show at Goodguys in 2012.

There’s certain events that all of us just like more than
others. The GOODGUYS West Coast Nationals is like
that. Beautiful fairgrounds, great weather and tons of
cool cars, trucks, kustoms and more!! From the first time
I ever attended to more recent trips, this is one of the
personal favorites. Numerous mini-shows within the
show make it just that much better. Throw in a great
swap meet, lots of vendors and a California “Tri-Tip”
sandwich and you know its gonna be a good time. Check
out some of the “too cool” rides that were in attendance
and you’ll know why the “Silver Anniversary” edition of
this event will lead to a “Gold Anniversary” Edition too!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH High School, NASCAR in Memphis Area & Submarine Races….
Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard
Editors Note: Here is another chapter in the hot rod history of the Mid-South as told by our very own historian Ed Woodard. Ed heads to Nashville, than the West Coast, then back to the Mid-South. Ed re-joins the TAPPETS car club and the fun begins…..
It wasn’t long before we returned to Nashville
where I became very active again with the
Tappets while holding a few jobs in
advertising and the jewelry business.
In the early days in Nashville produced a lot
of backyard true shade tree situations like the
time Johnny Boatman was constructing a ’27
T roadster with a small block Chevrolet
engine with a rather unusual kick up rear
cross member made from cast iron water
pipe with the screw in joints. To quickly take it
around the block to see if everything works a
person would hold the army jerry can on the
rear cross member. Not very safe I thought
but Johnny needed someone to hold the can.
Since I was the only one in attendance at the
time, I was elected. I didn’t know what a
historical ride that would turn out to be. That
car has since been rebuilt about 6 times and
I think those water pipe screw in joints have
remained until recently. We won’t name the
car because the latest rebuild is by far the
best yet…..
As for round tracks Old Hickory and
American Legion Bowl down by the Jefferson
Street bridge were the ¼ mile round tracks
along with the Fairgrounds. I recently found
out that Faron Young and some other
investors had a round track configuration in
the old Sulfur Dell baseball stadium for short
time.
Nashville….a new beginning….I am
going to hate this…..….# 3
But now here I am in Nashville TN, It’s 1955. &
I live about a mile from the yuppy school that I
was enrolled in….Making new friends wasn’t
really that hard. Hot Rodders always seem to
find one another. Nashville’s Nick Varallo’s &
Charlie Nickens drive in restaurants always
drew the fastest street cars. A few ‘40’s and
late model Chevy’s always seem to show up.
That is about the time I attended a hotrod
show at a local strip mall near the high school
and met a Tappets Hotrod club member. Didn’t
take me long to join up and get into the thick of
things. Lots of activities, safety checks, charity
events around Christmas. Things were going
fair but really missed Memphis. At the end of
my senior year I was able to transfer my
credits to Memphis Tech High & at least
graduate with my old high school, just not the
senior clout during that year! After a short stay
at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville TN, I figured I
had learned enough….That was a ….BIG
MISTAKE!!!....I gathered my marbles & my
wife & we moved to southern California &
worked for my uncle, Dr Calvin who was a
veterinarian and probably missed a good
chance to really bettering myself. It wasn’t long
before we were ready to return to Nashville,
which didn’t seem too bad after living 2000
miles from Tennessee. We really missed
seeing real trees as we know them in the
Eastern U.S., Also listening to John R on
WLAC radio could be heard late at night in
California. That radio show was a constant
reminder of the Nashville scene.
The operating ¼ mile drag strips were Halls TN,
Sturgis KY, Cumberland Airport Drag Strip that
ran on Friday night and Union Hill that ran
Saturday night & Sunday were 1/8 mile strips
with ¼ mile tracks at Lakeland, near Memphis
and later in the 60’s Riverside Dragstrip in West
Nashville.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.
Union Hill drag strip in the beginning…Check out the 2
strips of concrete…& the crowd control
Unfortunately all that remains of either are
some painted wall signs & a falling down
timing tower……
As a Tappets fund raiser we came up with an
idea to put on a car show however we figured
it might be a little too big for our club to pull off
so we joined forces with the Coasters car club.
That was in 1959 & was held in the coliseum at
the fairgrounds. Everything went pretty well
with the promotion, handing out handbills plus
a little radio advertising. We had a great
turnout however the night before the setup for
the 2nd show TSU wanted to use the building
for a Ray Charles concert.
Everything went well until Ray started to sing”
Hit the Road Jack” then the pennants we had
put up the night before came down. We got the
pennants back up but had to work all day. See
the second show with the pennants up. The
things we remember! After the 1959 show was
over it was decided that the Tappets would put
on the second show because the lack of help
from the Coasters, with the exception of a few
members. The Tappets put on 2 more shows in
the Coliseum then moved to the then new
Municipal Auditorium. About the same time I
was working for Rayco selling auto
accessories & seat covers, slowly getting into
the business.
This was about the last year for the U.S.
Nationals in Detroit 1959 and.was the year the
Ray Godman’s Tennessee Bo-Weevil car ran
the Albertson Olds dragster for Top Eliminator.
Rays car actually won the race but the car was
torqueing the front end up & over the finishing
line lights, making the Bo-Weevil the loser.
He did win as we were there & saw the
pass……but it wasn’t scored that way by the
officials. Just a bit of history that was
confirmed at the Memphis Street rods were
just starting to come out more. Homer
McIntire…Lawrence Smith…David
Sellers….and of course Tommy Sanborn was
just finishing his roadster….It wasn’t long that
Tommy was getting us together for day runs
too. It was just a few of us maybe 5 or 6 off to
a state park for a picnic lunch & return. I guess
that was about the way it started in Nashville in
the early 60’s. ….You will never guess what
was just located…The only picture of my 1934
Ford coupe. Check out the spare tire…no
fenders up front & headlights on the frame
horns!!!
We should mention a big time racer who was
also a pretty special street rodder, Milton
Potter.
Not only did he campaign the car in national
competition but dominated street eliminator at
local tracks too.
During the running of his car the Tappets
members always seem to stay close to offer
help like when he was running for the money
at Memphis against the Sanders Willys from
Murray KY that always was a challenge. His
car must be started under its own starter
without help. After several very hard attempts it
finally started possibly with a lot of members
fingers crossed. What was always neat was
the way that supercharged Oldsmobile would
really hook on the big end of the drag strip.
Just about the time a competitor would think
they had Milton beat that car would really
come into the power range. Also, When Milton
went from an unblown engine to a blower
engine he let several of us to make a pass on
the ¼ mile at Sturgis KY.
Unfortunately, after really getting the new car
hooking up he suffered a serious stroke that
grounded the race car. He did build a couple of
very nice street rods and was very active in
local meets. Milton was a good friend and I
was very sorry for his passing….
That’s about it for this month….but next
month I will open with True Tappets Tale
you will not believe….so be watching for
it…….

14 January 2012
For those of you, who love numbers,
engineers, speed freaks and those who think they have
gone too fast at one time or another.
This puts Corvette performance in perspective. This
article mentions the Lingenfelter twin turbo powered
Z06.
Read this thru slowly and try to
comprehend the amount of force produced in just
under 4 seconds! The last paragraph puts it all into
perspective !
There are no rockets or airplanes built
by any government in the world that can accelerate
from a standing start as fast as a Top Fuel Dragster or
Funny Car…..and that includes any aircraft launched
by a catapult from an aircraft carrier. Nothing can
compare…..
DEFINITION OF ACCELERATION
One top fuel dragster 500 cubic inch
Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4
rows of stock cars at the Daytona 500.
It takes just 15/100ths (0.15) of a
second for all 6,000+ horsepower (some believe 8,000
HP is more realistic - there are no dynamometers
capable of measuring) of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster
engine to reach the rear wheels.
Under full throttle, a dragster engine
consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitromethane per second; a
fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate
with 25% less energy being produced.
A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine
cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster's
supercharger.
With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed
in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is
compressed into a near-solid form before ignition.
Cylinders run on the verge of
hydraulic lock at full throttle.
At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry:
methodology and technology by which quantities of
reactants and products in chemical reactions are
determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture of nitromethane, the
flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F. (Oxy-
acetylene on "cut" is 6,300)
Nitromethane burns yellow. The
spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night
is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric
water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to
each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in
each cylinder.
Spark plug electrodes are totally
consumed during one pass.
SPEED Cost money… How fast you wanna’ go???
After halfway, the engine is dieseling from compression,
plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 deg F. The
engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
If spark momentarily fails early in the
run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders
and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder
heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.
In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5
seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over
4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track,
the launch acceleration approaches 8G's. Dragsters
reach over 300 miles per hour before you have
completed reading this sentence. The redline is actually
quite high at 9,500 rpm.
Assuming all the equipment is paid off,
the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING
BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimate $1,000.00 per
second.
The current top fuel dragster elapsed
time record is 4.428 seconds for the quarter mile
(11/12/06, Tony Schumacher, at Pomona , CA ). The
top speed record is 336.15 mph as measured over the
last 66' of the run (05/25/05 Tony Schumacher, at
Hebron , OH ).
Putting all of this into perspective:
You are driving the average $140,000
Lingenfelter 'twin-turbo' powered Corvette Z06. Over a
mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and ready
to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You
have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette
hard up through the gears and blast across the starting
line and pass the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The
'tree' goes green for both of you at that instant.
The dragster launches and starts after
you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an
incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and
within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you.
He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from
where you just passed him.
Think about it, from a standing start,
the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only
caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he
passed you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course.
...... and that gearheads, is ACCELERATION!
We have run this article before, but it would be fun to share it again.
Thanks to Battlefield AACA member Gary Haneberg for sending it to

The Shades of the Past SRA Hot Rod Roundup #29 was a huge success based on all the feedback coming in. This was year 2 at the Dollywood Splash Country Park. The Shades took the year one feedback and made the show even better. Throw in some great weather and it’s a perfect recipe for everyone who came out to have some hot rodding fun. The quality of the entries is better an better every year. The judging for all the awards is very tough…but fun. Here’s just few of the cool rides that were at the event.

This month we travel up north to Tinley Park IL, to Dave Verschave garage. Dave does awesome automotive paint & graphic’s work. One of Dave’s dream rides is a “gasser style” “double nickel” Chevy. Dave had Larry at Williams Graphics do a “TOON” of his dream ride and look what's going on in his garage now!!! There’s a whole bunch of metal fabricating, welding and wrenching happening on Dave’s next “too cool” ride. This one’s going to be a bunch of fun when it’s done. I have my place in line for a ride!!

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"
Let’s close this months issue with some shots of “vintage tin”. These shots come to us from Jimmy Lowe of www.rustinweeds.com . The majority of these shots ( Chevelle’s) were taken within 60 miles of Nashville TN. The “iron” is out there…ya just gotta look for it a little. Until next month….”in rust we trust”
