Halogen lamps General information
5522 5533spectrum – THE GE LIGHTING LAMP CATALOGUE THE GE LIGHTING LAMP CATALOGUE – spectrum
Halogen lamps provide a compact, highoutput light source popular for accent, display and general lighting applications in awide variety of commercial, industrial andresidential environments.
Choosing the right lampTo help you achieve the most effectivespread and level of illumination for yourparticular application, use the performancecones shown in this catalogue.
Assessing performance conesPerformance cones show the area, strengthand distribution of light produced by eachlamp. This varies according to the level ofilluminance produced by the lamp (lux), theheight of the lamp above the object beingilluminated, and the beam angle of the lampselected.
Selecting power and beamComparing performance cones lets you selectthe correct lamp for your needs. Forexample, GE’s most commonly used mirrorlamp, the 50W EXZ Precise™ MR16ConstantColor™ with a beam angle of 25°,would produce 700 lux at 2 metres high witha beam diameter of 0.9 metres.
If, however, you wanted a smaller beamdiameter of say 0.4 metres, the 20W spotbeam ESX with its narrower 12° beam anglewould be more effective, producing 838 lux. This would provide 15% extra luminance witha 60% reduction in energy consumption.
Selecting beam anglesGE halogen lamps are offered in a range ofbeam angles from 8° to 60°. Choose smallbeam angles to highlight single features witha tight focus, wide beam angles to provide a wash of ambient lighting achieve a varietyof effects with intermediate beams.

Uniform performanceThe performance cones can also providea quick guide for achieving uniformityof illuminance on a horizontal plane
Select UV controlTungsten Halogen lamps emit ultra violetrays similar to sunlight. Although the level ofultra violet emitted by halogen lamps is farlower - for example 8 hours in an office lit byhalogen is equivalent to 10 minutes’ suneliminating these emissions is a sensibleprecaution. Choosing UV control halogenlamps effectively eliminates UV-C andgreatly reduces UV-B radiation.
How to achieve maximum lamp performanceMost instances of early failure of halogenlamps are caused by incorrect installation. The risk of early failure will be reduced ifyou observe the following points:
•Damage such as bent pins and cracks in theceramic base caused by rough handlingduring installation.
•Poor electrical contact between pins andlampholder which can lead to arcing. This isusually a result of insufficient insertion ofthe pins into the lamp holder.
•Finger grease on the quartz bulb whichcreates local hot spots and can lead todisintegration of the glass. Note thisproblem is avoided with sealed mirror lampsas the bulb is protected from handling.
•Over voltage - running a lamp at higher thanrated voltage for prolonged periods cansubstantially reduce life. For example, a 5%increase in rated lamp voltage can lead to a50% reduction in lamp life. If problemsoccur the voltage should be checked at thelamp base and the rating of the transformershould be checked against the lamp loadapplied.
•Overheating is usually caused byinsufficient ventilation or cooling of the lampand can be the result of poorly designedlamp fittings or installation.
•Open lamps should only be used within aluminaire with a protective shield.
Atmospheric factorsIn harsh atmospheric conditions we wouldrecommend ConstantColor™ which has amuch more resilient coating plus the addedadvantage of 6000 hours.
Humidity does not normally present a problem with dichroic lamps, however earlylamp failure can occur in areas of highhumidity such as in kitchens, bathrooms and swimming pools. In these applications, fittings should be chosen with a moistureresistance or IP rating, appropriate to theenvironmental conditions in which they will be used.
