8Ward off virus with HCQ: Trump
LALIT K JHAWashington
US President Donald Trump hasagain defended the use of hy-droxychloroquine to ward offcoronavirus, saying many front-line medical workers agree withhim that the malaria drug worksin the early stages of COVID-19infection, despite mounting evi-dence that it is ineffective intreating the disease.
"I happen to believe in it (hy-droxychloroquine). I would takeit. As you know, I took it for a 14-day period, and I'm here. I happento think it works in the earlystages. I think frontline medicalpeople believe that too -- some, many," Trump told reporters at aWhite House news conference onTuesday.
"But the one thing we know: It'sbeen out for a long time, that par-ticular formula, and that's essen-
tially, what it is, the pill. And it'sbeen for malaria, lupus, and oth-er things. It's safe. It doesn't causeproblems. I had no problem. I hadabsolutely no problem, felt no dif-ferent. Didn't feel good, bad, or in-different. I tested, as you know. Itdidn't hurt me, and it's not goingto hopefully hurt anybody," hesaid.
Meanwhile, President DonaldTrump defended the doctor whoclaimed that hydroxychloro-quine is a 'cure' for coronavirusafter her videos were removed byTwitter and resulted in his son'saccount being suspended, accord-ing to Daily Mail.
In the video, Dr. Stella Im-manuel, a physician from Hous-ton whom Trump described asspectacular, promotes hydroxy-chloroquine as a sure-fire curefor the coronavirus. She claims tohave successfully treated 350 peo-ple "and counting," including old-
er patients and some with under-lying medical conditions.
"You don't need masks, there isa cure," Immanuel says in thevideo. But in videos posted to herFacebook page, Immanuel regu-larly wears masks while preach-ing during religious events.
Dr. Stella Immanuel has a longhistory of supporting conspiracytheories and Trump ended hisTuesday press conference whenpressed about his own retweets ofher claims about hydroxychloro-quine.
According to Daily Mail, Im-manuel believes Jesus will de-stroy Facebook's servers after thesite deleted a video in which sheclaims hydroxychloroquinecures coronavirus. Immanuel -who also believes demon sexcauses sickness and that reptil-ians help run the government -thinks God is poised to strikedown the social media site.
US Prez givesa glimpse of
America underJoe Biden

President Donald Trump ispainting a dystopian por-trait of what Joe Biden'sAmerica might look like, as-serting crime and chaoswould ravage communitiesshould the former vice pres-ident win the White Housein November.
Left unsaid: A recent surgein violent crime in severalAmerican cities has hap-pened on his watch.
"Irony is way down the listof things that PresidentTrump worries about," saidRobert Spitzer, a political sci-entist at the State Universityof New York College at Cort-land whose research focuseson gun politics and theAmerican presidency. "He'sturning to the old playbook -appeal to the fears of Ameri-cans and then associatethose fears with the Demo-cratic Party, specifically JoeBiden." With echoes ofRichard Nixon's law-and-or-der campaign in 1968,Trump is trying to energisehis conservative base whilealso making an appeal to asmall patch of undecidedvoters by posing the ques-tion: Which man will keepyou safer? By leaning hardon select scenes of violence,Trump is banking on thatunrest continuing. But theprotests could wane. Violentcrime around the US hasbeen on a downward trajec-tory for the better part of thelast three decades.
Lanae Erickson, a seniorvice president for social poli-cy and politics at the centre-left think tank Third Way,said Trump's attempt to usethe Nixon playbook and tapinto anxieties about crime isodd given that, unlike Nixonin 1968, Trump is already inthe White House.

Mask-clad Muslimsbegin downsized Hajj
AGENCIES / Dubai
Pilgrims, donning facemasks and moving insmall groups after days inisolation, began arrivingto Islam's holiest site inMecca on Wednesday forthe start of a historicallyunique and scaled-downhajj experience reshapedby the coronavirus pan-demic.
The hajj is one of Islam'smost important and pro-found requirements, per-formed once in a lifetime.
The hajj, both physicallyand spiritually demand-ing, is intended to bring
about greater humility andunity among Muslims.
But rather than standingand praying shoulder-to-shoulder in a sea of peoplefrom different walks oflife, pilgrims this year aresocial distancing - standingapart and moving in smallgroups of 20 to limit expo-sure and the potentialtransmission of the coron-avirus.
While the experience willbe starkly different, it re-mains an opportunity forpilgrims to wipe clean pastsins, deepen their faith andfullfil one of Islam's fivepillars.

Protester slamsNetanyahu with
life-size ‘last supper’ statue
AGENCIES / Tel Aviv
Residents of the city of Tel Avivwoke up Wednesday to a jarringsite: a pop-up exhibit depicting alife-size statue of Israeli PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahuenjoying a lavish meal by himselfat a sprawling table in a mock re-enactment of the Last Supper.
In recent weeks, thousands of
people have taken to the streets, calling on Netanyahu to resign, angry over what they say is hisbungled response to an economiccrisis and depicting him as a he-donist out of touch with commonpeople.
Artist Itay Zalait said the in-stallation is meant to symbolisethe "last supper of the Israelidemocracy." The 10-meter long
table is filled with platters ofjuicy fruit, wads of cash, emptybottles of liquor and a cigar - ajab at the expensive gifts Ne-tanyahu is accused of improper-ly accepting from wealthy associ-ates. Netanyahu, appearingpudgy and disheveled in a darksuit and red tie, is seen digginginto a large cake - alone amid 12empty chairs.
