Session Objectives#2

Must understand the need for input, output and storage devices in a computer system

Should describe common input and output devices

Could justify the selection of suitable input and output devices for given circumstances.

Practice Python commands using www.codecademy.com Attempt using the Python IDE

2.1.2 Computing Hardware

Definition: Computer hardware is the physical components of a computer system. They can be either inside the computer box (internal) which are called processor components, or external and plug in usually via a USB port. These are known as peripheral devices.

Peripheral Devices are split into 3 groups:Input, Output & Storage.

TASK: All complete the interactive task individually and then collectively on the whiteboard.

2.1.2 Computing Hardware

Make notes of the purpose for each of the devices

Input devices – so that the computer can be told what to do and the data to be used.

Output devices – so that the computer can tell us what it has done or it can control some device to do something useful, such as alter the central heating because it is too hot.

Storage devices – so that the computer can remember what is meant to do after being switched off. NB storage devices do not need power to hold data unlike RAM (Random Access Memory) which is wiped when power is cut.

MORE ABOUT STORAGE IN SESSION #3

RECAP and Input Devices

Hardware can be broadly split into 2 main categories: – processor components and peripheral devices

Can you explain the difference??

TASK: Read through the Boardworks Input device presentation and complete the activities – take notes/record key terms as you go.

EXTENSION – Research different input devices which have been developed to assist user with special needs. Prepare to share your findings with the rest of the class.

RECAP - Output Devices

RECAP – can you explain the difference between an input and output device???

OUTPUT DEVICES –

TASK – Read through the Boardworks presentation, taking notes and completing activities

EXTENSION – Research output devices which have been developed to support users with specialist needs. Again, prepare to feedback your findings to the class.
