Our first book offering this month is THRIST FOR POWER, energy, water, and human survival. (non fic-
tion) by Michael E. Webber. “ Although it is widely understood that energy and water are the world's two
most critical resources, their vital interconnections and vulnerabilities are less often recognized. This far-
sighted book offers a new, holistic way of thinking about energy and water – a big picture approach that
reveals the interdependence of the two resources, identifies the seriousness of the challenges, and lays out
an optimistic strategy with an array of solutions to ensure the continuing sustainability of both.”
Brad Meltzer and Tod Goldberg 's THE HOUSE OF SECRETS (large print) tells the story of Hazel Nash
who's father is Jack Nash – the host of a conspiracy TV show. Growing up she loved her Dad's stories
about a hidden book belonging to Benedict Arnold that was hidden in a corpse. “Years later Hazel wakes
in the hospital and remembers nothing, not even her name. She's told she was in a car accident that killed
her father.” A visit from the FBI asking about the book, guns in her home that she doesn't remember own-
ing, scars from a fight she can't recall, deepen the mystery. She's compelled to find the truth.
NIGHT SCHOOL, by Lee Child takes place mostly in Germany and deals with an American who's AWOL
from the Army who plans to sell stolen goods to terrorists. “From Langley to Hamburg, Jalalabad to Kiev,
Night School moves like a bullet through a treacherous landscape of double crosses, faked identities, and
new and terrible enemies....”
Kristin Hannah's THE NIGHTINGALE (large print) “tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and
experience, by ideals, passion, and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward sur-
vival, love and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France – a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that cele-
brates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women.” Our book discussion group all gave
this novel a 5, which was the highest score we give. We loved it.
The Highlands Ridge Book Discussion Group will meet on March 23 at 1:30 in the library. Book to be
discussed is Small Great things, by Jodi Picoult.

Chorale News
By: Karen O’Laughlin, Co-Director
Hello everyone! I’m Karen O’Laughlin, secretary for our HR Chorale. I will attempt to
keep you informed of what’s happening in our Chorale.
Well, spring is coming! It may not be much different here in Paradise, but our upcoming Spring Concert tells us it
is so! We are all busy rehearsing for you and are anxious to perform. I know you will recognize the songs our direc-
tors have picked out. You will want to sing along! We often remember lyrics to our favorite songs, and we get excit-
ed whenever we hear them on the radio or tapes or our mp3 players. It’s funny how we can remember lyrics from
long ago, but can’t remember what we had for lunch yesterday! Personally, I think music enriches our lives and for
that reason we should listen to music on a regular basis. It truly does soothe the soul.
That being said, our upcoming concert will be a “Music of the Night” and “A Grand Night for Singing”. The lat-
ter song title was a musical revue showcasing many songs of Rogers & Hammerstein. Our concert will also be a
showcase of beautiful music about the night! Some old, some new, some classic some pop! And we hope you will
enjoy it.
This is also the time of year to renew or become a Patron of our HR Chorale. Without our Patrons we wouldn’t
be able to keep on singing. So please renew or become a new Patron. You can contact our treasurer, Jo Johnson, for
information at 863-402-1308 or pick up the form in the HR Office. Have your check in by Feb 20 to ensure you’ll
have your name in the concert program. We thank you in advance.
Our annual Spaghetti Dinner was held February 19 and huge thanks go out to all those who attended. It is our
biggest fund raiser and we appreciate the support.
We also always appreciate the wonderful response we get from so many of you about our concerts. So we hope
you will join us either on Saturday, March 18th at 7:00pm in Founder’s Hall or on Sunday, March 19th at 4:00pm in
the sanctuary of St. John Methodist Church in Sebring (behind Walmart). Until then, we’ll keep on singing and
“Dream” the “Impossible Dream”, while “Walking After Midnight”, along “Moon River”, and we’ll be “Swinging on
a Star” so we can “Fly Me to the Moon” to the music of “Jersey Boys” all while “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Hoping
to see you at the concert! Happy Spring!!
TOP REASONS WHY PICKLEBALL HAS BECOME SO POPULAR
The court is small so you don't have to chase the ball too far.
The games are short so you can play spirited games for two hours before your nap.
The rallies last longer.
The ball is brightly colored and easy to see for us "wonderfully mature" folks.
The ball is slower--kinda.
The smaller court makes for more laughter and easier "trash talking."
The ladies can purchase beautifully coordinated "outfits" to look good while playing.
The paddles come in many shapes and colors so one can fit the paddle to ones mood on any given day.
The game can become a healthy elixir.
The game helps with balance, hand-eye coordination, agility and reflexes--all important traits to stay in shape.
The ball doesn't leave much of a mark when you get hit by it.
The game doesn't discriminate between young and mature, short or tall, man or lady--all can play well and have fun.
The game doesn't always produce winners due to power, speed or strength--it often rewards patience, strategy and
placement.
In a recent Central Florida Traveling Pickleball League contest, Highlands Ridge hosted an awfully good team from
Lake Ashton and found a way to win. The team was lead by the "youthful" tandem of Chris Donaghy and Dave Shaner,
going 4-0 for the second consecutive week plus the mature, veteran team of Gary Schinderle and Doug Ebeling. Solid
contributions were delivered by the "all Wisconsin" team of Bill Alexejun and Bob Cisler. Mickey Dorman battled an
illness to help with the win and Brian Gillis illustrated what a fierce competitor he is.
Yet, the most spirited play of the match was delivered by our two lady competitors, Candy Gillis and Donna Landers.
Winning isn't everything but it is fun to win.
Cherish everyday!

A Letter from the Rainbow Bridge
Hi, Mum
Now that I’ve been across The Rainbow Bridge for a couple weeks, they said I should write a letter home. Sorry,
mum, but I’m so busy ‘across the bridge’ that I haven’t thought of home much. They said it’s okay and that you
would understand. I hope you do. (I think you will.)
Remember that night when I wasn’t feeling very well and we were all crying? I don’t remember much, but I do
remember seeing and hearing all of you and feeling your touches and hugs…I remember hearing “we love you”
and that one last command of “Go through”. I didn’t know what you meant, so I turned around and walked through
the fog that was in front of me. I saw the biggest bridge I’ve ever seen! And so many friends on the other side of it!
They were all playing with toys and balls! You were right to tell me to go there!
My feet kept moving forward, but my heart kept pulling me back. Your touches became lighter and lighter and I
wanted to come back and nudge your hands for more love, but I was overcome by this feeling of curiosity for the
happy place over the bridge! My feet started moving on their own, like a gentle breeze was moving them forward
for me! I can’t explain it, but I had no doubt that it was the right thing to do!
So, I walked across that big, huge bridge by myself! I looked for you, because you’re always by my side, walking
with me, but this was different. I didn’t have a collar around my neck or a leash connecting me to you ~ I was
‘free’! Even though you weren’t there with me, I never felt alone! I actually felt like I had a huge cape of love
wrapped around my body and the more I walked, the easier it was to breathe! So, I kept walking! And I would feel
more warmth in the big hug, so I kept on walking! I eventually made it over the big bridge – I did it by myself,
mum!
When I got here, all of my new friends greeted me and helped me walk off the bridge ~ it was so cool! They gave
me a pair of wings and said that I was now a Guardian Angel!
What I’ve learned over these past few weeks has been amazing and nothing like I’ve seen before! We’re all the
same up here ~ we all have wings and we all have Forever People to watch over ~ that’s YOU, mum! You’re my
Forever Person and I’m your Forever Dog! We had such a great life together and I do miss you a LOT, but please
know that I am so happy in my new home across The Bridge!
I’ll send you another Earth Angel so you won’t be alone. Give them your whole heart, like you gave it to me. I’ll
check in every so often to make sure they treasure your love ~ I always did! When you miss me, think of a rainbow
and know I’m on the other side of it, waiting to walk with you again. I’ll always be in your heart. I love you, mum!
Time for me to go and play!

If you notice the employees of Highlands Ridge have a brighter smile, a wave or a thank you.....it's all because
of you. I can't imagine that Frank could have a bigger smile but he just might sing louder (heaven help us) but
it's ok because this year the residents of this wonderful community have outdone themselves. Don't be sur-
prised if the guy working on the golf course acts like he's glad you are playing or gives you a nod or a
wave....it's because they appreciate what you did for them.
I can't begin to thank those of you who donated money towards gift cards and the ladies who accepted dona-
tions as well as those who helped prepare food for the luncheon. Everything was perfect and I know our efforts
were appreciated.
We are so blessed to be living here, taking it easy and enjoying life. It isn't that way for a lot of people. If we
can make someone's life a little brighter or give them some unexpected help it makes us a better person and it
makes me feel good knowing we have made a difference in someone's life.
Our community has gone thru a lot of changes and we have a long way to go. we need our workers to know we
care about them and what they do here to help us. Remember, if they know you appreciate what they do then
they will try harder and take pride in their jobs.
Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donations and for making our employees have
one very special day! We are truly blessed to be living in a great community!

Greetings from the HR HOA Board.
Ballots were mailed out on February 14 for the upcoming election of officers. You should have received an instruction
sheet, a ballot, and a return envelope. You may :
1—-mail your ballot in (using the return envelope);
2—-drop your ballot (in the return envelope) in the HRHOA drop box in front of the Admin Office;
3—-appoint a proxy to cast your vote; or,
4—-bring your vote (in the return envelope) to the Annual Meeting.
Regardless of how you return your ballot, it is to be received by the Board in the return envelope
provided. Names on the envelope will be checked against the membership roster, the folded
ballot will be removed from the envelope and placed in the ballot box. You are not required to
sign your ballot. Please contact Pat Shine or Sue Hover if you have any questions regarding
the ballot/election process. The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 4pm in Founders Hall.
Waste Connections of Florida will begin delivering trash containers in Highlands County on
February 20. Recycle containers will be delivered mid-March. Regardless of whether or not
you have received your new receptacle by the roll out date, our new trash pick up schedule will
be ONCE A WEEK, on FRIDAYS, beginning March 3 (according to the information they have
provided to us). Trash goes in the larger container, and recyclables go into the smaller container. GLASS IS
NOT recyclable and should go into the GARBAGE container. More helpful information can be found on highlandstransition.com
website. The HOA Board requests your patience and cooperation in this transition. The Covenants
specify that trash containers are to be kept fully enclosed and covered. Conversation with the
Declarant agrees that we will continue to keep the garbage container(s) inside the garage.
We want to keep our Community aesthetically pleasing to passersby as well as to our own
neighbors. Hope to see you at the Annual Meeting.

LGA NEWS
By: Ann Meyer, Vice President [email protected]
What a great "Winter" we are having! The weather has been nearly perfect and opportunities for good golf
have been abundant. I hope each and every one of you has taken advantage of the weather and the improv-
ing conditions on our two beautiful golf courses. By the time you read this, February will be in the rearview
mirror, the 2017 Round Robin will be history (thank you, Marilyn Vedebeck), and we will be ready for a
fun-filled March! The first think to mark on your March calendar is the return of the 8:00 am tee times.
Be sure to set your alarm clock! Then, be ready to sign up for our Spring Choose-Up, which will be on
Thursday, March 9 at 12:30 on the South course -- dinner to follow at the Tavern. Sign-up in The Book at
the South Pro Shop. Now, here is BIG NEWS! Thanks to Bobbie Pinkney, our Member-Guest will go on
as scheduled on Monday, March 27. If you see Bobbie, please thank her for her willingness to head up this
fun event! And finally, our Farewell will be held on March 29 at the North Course. There will be an 8:00
am Shotgun, followed by our luncheon meeting in the Tavern. Be sure to sign up in The Book!
