Grant will preserve musical heritageSINGLE Gloucester, a folkarchive project developed byGloucester Traditions, hasbeen awarded a HeritageLottery Grant of £27,000 topublish songs from Glouces-tershire and South Glouces-tershire online.
The old county has a richhistory of folk music andsong and some of our localsongs are known the worldover, but there are hundreds
more Gloucestershire songsthat lie forgotten and unpub-lished in manuscript and insound archives. Gloucester-shire Traditions have a planto put this right and publishall of the known songs andtunes from the county on aneasily accessible website.
“There are over 1,000 folksongs and tunes collectedin the county,” says GwilymDavies, one of theinstigators
of the project, “who knowshow many of these will be-come the popular songs of the future?”
The project is ambitiousand is the first of its kindanywhere in England. It willtranscribe each song intoeasy-to-download formats, in-cluding songsheets, MP3 andMIDI files.
Anybody interested in fam-ily history will also benefit
from the website, as CarolDavies explains, “With eachsong we are also research-ing the person from whomit was collected. This meansthat you may find oneof yourancestors is represented andlearn a song that was sung inyour family a hundred yearsago. In many instances wehave original field record-ings,so you canactually hearthe voices of history.”
The project starts now, withtraining for volunteers tolearn how to transcribe thesongs into different formats. The next few months will befocused on bringingthe mate-rialtogetherand building thewebsite. Anyone who wouldlike to volunteer or findout more about the projectcan make contact throughgloucestershiretraditions.co.uk

BACK in Shakespeare’s daythere were only men in thea-tre companies.
Times have changed, andmost performing groupshave plenty of women andgirls.
But the girls of Your CallTheatre Group, based inThornbury, are findingthem-selves heavily outnumberedby the boys.
“Ours is a small, friendlyand happy group, currentlywith 14 members aged be-tween13 and19, butonlyfourof them are girls. It’s unu-sual, andwe’renot sure quitehow it happened,”said chair-man Jill Dimond.
“Everyone is welcome, and everyone takes an ac-tive part. In our shows, boyssometimes take female rolesand vice versa. It reallydoesn’t matter, and the showsare always of a high stand-ard.”
Your Call’s next productionwill be The Hysterical His-tory of the Trojan War byD.M.Larson, by arrangementwith www.freedrama.net.

SIX years ago Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellow-head, bought a violin.
It had all the appearanceof a new instrument but thelabel inside gave the date1915 and the name Richard SHoward.
Research revealed that theviolin had been made — butnever finished — by a luthierand occasional music hallperformer from Leeds calledRichard Spencer Howard.
He had been conscripted in1916 at the age of 35 and two
years later was killed duringthe battle of Messines Ridge.
The pieces of his violinwere given to his daughterRose in a manila envelopeandshe kept them allher life.
On her death, the partswere sold and the violin wasfinally finished by luthierRoger Claridge in 2007.
The discovery of this his-tory inspired Sam to createa multimedia performancetelling the incrediblestory of the fiddle that it took nearly100 years to complete.
