A holy pilgrimage to KEDARNATH, BADRINATH , GANGOTRI, YAMUNOTRI -- called CHARDHAAM YATRA—( the landscape also known as DEVA BHOOMI) is a great achievement in one's life. The following is small description of these places.
Legend has it:- That Kumbh began , when the Gods, weakened by their continuous battles with the demons, sought ceasefire in order to churn the nectar of immortality from the oceans. When the nectar was indeed procured, the two sides battled again, over, who would get to drink first and the battle lasted 12 ‘God Days’ or 12 years on the human calendar. During the battle, Lord Vishnu took hold of the urn or the Kumbh, containing the nectar and lost four drops which fell on four different spots on the earth – Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Nashik and Ujjain. Hence, Haridwar stands as one of the most important holy cities for the Hindus around the world. The other reason why the city is famous is, its strategic location at the place “where the Ganga enters the plains”, and flows in force. The Ganga Aaarathi in the evening in the banks of Ganga is a very attractive and devotional function. Mansa Devi temple and Chandima Devi temple, both of which can be reached through rope way, are places of attraction for pilgrims. Till the 1960s, the pilgrimage was dangerous due to flash floods, the steep mountains , landslides, bad roads and of course the wild animals. Many pilgrims died en-route to Gangotri.
RISHIKESH
Rishikesh is yet another centre of pilgrimage and tourist attraction for Indians as well as foreigners. Rishikesh is popularly known as the Yoga Capital of the World. Rishikesh is 28 kms from Haridwar, on way to Badrinath and is situated at the foothills on either side of holy river Ganga and is surrounded by Shivalik ranges from three sides. Rishikesh complex consists of three distinct areas, known as Rishikesh, Muni-ki-Reti and Swargashram. The town is well known for modem and ancient Ashrams. Hrishikesa is a name of Vishnu. The words Hrishika and Isha join together to make Hrishikesa. Hrishika means senses and Isha means master or Lord. (Lord of senses ie. Vishnu). It is said that when Raibhya Rishi did rigorous penances, the lord Vishnu appeared and the place was named 'Hrishikesh'. Bharat, brother of Lord Rama, also subjected himself to severe penances here and in his memory Bharat Temple was constructed. Temples are also dedicated to Lord Ram, Lakshman and Satrukhnan.

GANGOTHRIGangothri is of the origin of Ganga. The main origin of the river is “Goumukh” This place is situated about 19 kilometers above the Gangothri temple. The origin is from a large sheet of glaciers in Himalayas, called GAUMUKHI, (shaped like the mouth of a cow). At the origin it is called Bhageerathi because it is because of the penace of King Bhageeratha , for the salvation of his sinned ancestors, that Ganga came down from heaven. The name Ganga is given when Alakananda meets Bhageerathi.

Gangothri is the easily reachable , where as Goumukh can be reached only by trekking and is about 11,500 ft. above sea level. The Gangothri temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (in the month of April –May) and closes down on Yama Dwithiya (month of October –November) The temple remains closed for the rest of six months, when the deity is worshipped at Mukhwa, near Harsil. In addition to the deity Ganga, Bhageerath shila, where Bhageerath did the penace, Pandava Guha, where Pandavas rested enroute Kailash, Soorya kund and Gourikund (Sulpher springs where the temperature in the springs is always 56 degree C, (131 F) even in winter when outside temperature is 17 degree C, (67F ) are the other places worth visiting at Gangothri. Submerged shivling is a natural rock in the rIver where Lord Shiva sat to receive the Ganga in his matted locks. It is visible only when the water level decreases in winter.
