DarlinghurstWelcome to the hub of Sydney’sgay and lesbian community.Darlinghurst is home for some ofSydney’s hottest gay and lesbianclubs, cafes, and bars, and it’swhere many community groupsare based. The main strip,Oxford Street, is queer central;perfect for people watching, nightclubbing and dining. Each year the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Grasparade winds its way along this “Golden Mile”, whippingthe crowds into a frenzy ofdelight, amidst a sea of sequins, feathers, and leathers. When the frenzy subsides, the streetbecomes everyday gay andlesbian again: cruisy and relaxed,an eclectic jumble of restaurants, cafes, bookstores, fetish andIndian takeaway.

NewtownThe edgier alternative toDarlinghurst, this inner westsuburb is proud of its streetfashions, student mix, lesbianpopulation, second-hand storesand great coffee. King Street is packed with restaurants and cafes, and is also home to the Newtown Hotelwhere you’ll get your fix of top Australian drag. Nearby is the Imperial Hotel, madefamous in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and another stapleof Sydney’s drag scene.
