GROWTH OF THE GAME
Before I dive into this month’s article of all things Gateway PGA Foundation and Growth of the
Game, I want to relay how great my experience was at this year’s PGA Merchandise Show.
Having attended multiple Shows in the past, I am familiar with the numerous opportunities for
PGA Professionals to network, expand their industry knowledge, and enhance their operation/
facility. This being my first Show representing the Gateway PGA, I was able to attend semi-
nars and meetings that armed me with tools and information to bring back to St. Louis and
implement on our local level.
The final Golf 2.0 education series seminar is Tuesday, February 5th at Meadowbrook Country Club. Topics to
be covered are: Golf 2.0 resources, employment, education, and services and benefits of each. Tim Marks, PGA
Employment Consultant, will host the seminar with help from Gateway PGA representatives. Don’t miss this ex-
cellent opportunity to arm yourself and your facility with tools to grow your business in 2013!
Pros In Schools program kicked off 2013 with a successful month at Immaculate Conception Dardenne. Every
6th, 7th, and 8th grader was introduced to golf during their gym classes through fun and interactive games and les-
sons. “Thank You” to Todd Meyer, Barbara Blanchar, and Nathan Charnes for their time and dedication! But
wait – we’re not done yet! February 6th starts the Alton Middle School program again. We are looking forward
to a great third year!
As was mentioned in last month’s newsletter article, the Foundation will be enhancing the opportunities available
to juniors participating in the Gateway Junior PGA’s Mini and Novice 9 Divisions. In addition to the 9 hole tour-
nament play, each event will offer a 30 minute clinic taught by one of you – our Gateway PGA Professionals, a
PGA Sports Academy practice session, and an emphasis on the learning and development side of junior golf. Our
goal is to have 10 summer events with PGA Professional involvement with the opportunity to meet potential new
customers. We will be finishing the summer schedule soon and looking to Pros to sign up for events. Stay tuned
for updates.
Remember, as you are finalizing your junior golf schedule and offerings this year make sure to keep the
Foundation’s Equipment Rental Program in mind. All of our equipment is available for rent including: Golfzilla,
SNAG, T-Golf, Birdieball, and soon to come Golfopotomus! A complete list and details will be sent to everyone
in the near future. If you are interested in reserving equipment, please contact Ali Wells at [email protected] or
636-532-3355 x105.
Have a great February!

RULES CORNER
Rule 25-2 provides relief for an embedded ball. The rule pro-
vides for relief only if the ball is in a closely mown area.
However, the committee may establish a local rule that pro-
vides relief "Through the green. This local rule is in section 4a
of appendix 1.
This local rule is on the PGA of America's hard card and our
Gateway PGA hard card. It is also used on the PGA Tour,
LPGA Tour and all USGA events.
The local rule was in effect a few weeks ago at the tournament
in Dhabi. As I am sure all are aware Tiger Woods incurred a
two stroke penalty for dropping improperly under this rule.
Tiger and his fellow competitor, Martin Kaymer determined
his ball was embedded and he took relief.
When you read the local rule you will see there are two excep-
tions. The first says "A player may not take relief under this
Local Rule if the ball is embedded in
sand in an area that is not closely
mown". Tigers' ball was clearly in an
area that was not closely mown and it
was embedded in sand. Therefore he
was assessed a two stroke penalty for
breach of the Local Rule and he
missed the cut by one stroke.
In some online discussions some
people wondered why the Commit-
tee could not penalize him one shot
since he dropped in an area that would be proper for a Ball
Unplayable. The answer to that is found in Decision 34-3/6.In
the second sentence of the third paragraph the decision states
"as Rule 28 (Ball Unplayable) requires the player to have the
intention to proceed under it before lifting the ball, the Com-
mittee may not apply Rule 28 to the players’ actions".

2013 Gateway Putt Putt Challenge Recap
The 2nd Annual Gateway PGA Putt Putt Challenge in Orlando, FL, turned out to be a great opener for the 2013 season. After a change of venue from the 2012 course, Congo River GC, to the Hawaiian Rumble Adventure Golf, perfect weather was in store for the 28 participants in this years' event.
Defending champions, host Members, and visionaries, Joe Schwent & Shawn Barnes, both had new partners for 2013 and again selected a great format and venue for the contest. The event was contested on the Kahuna and Lani courses, with win-ners awarded prizes for each 9 hole score as well as over 36 hole total plus skins.
After all scores were returned, a tie for the championship was eminent as Old Hawthorne's Travis McCubbin & Kevin Stull tied the team of Brett Moomey & George Schrage, posted top scores of 7-under par 74's, to share the title. Awards were pre-sented after the rounds at Millers Ale House. McCubbin & Stull credited their success to hours of Pro Shop Carpet putting practice while Moomey & Schrage credited their success to AB/NBev.

Add some heart to your golf game! February is
“Heart Month” – which is a good reminder that
our hearts need fitness attention, too. The best way
to insure a strong heart is through cardiovascular
exercise, which is simply working the large mus-
cles of the body in a rhythmic fashion.
The Heart of Staying Active
Here’s why a healthy heart is important, according
to the American Heart Association’s Fitting in Fit-
ness booklet: “The more physically active you are,
the more oxygen your body needs to do the activi-
ties. You breathe faster and your heart beats faster
to deliver more oxygen to the working muscles.
Ultimately, the increased workload on your heart
makes it stronger and more efficient. Then you can
do more without tiring.”
Translation for golfers: You stay longer and
stronger in your game!
Cardio exercises get the heart rate up and bring
oxygen into our bodies. Examples of cardiovascu-
lar activities include walking, running, swimming
and biking. “Aerobic” is a word often used to de-
scribe cardio exercise. Aerobic means “oxygen.”
Aerobic activities help work your heart and lungs,
improving your ability to take in oxygen. The bet-
ter your body uses oxygen, the more active you
can be without tiring.
How does this help our golf game?
The benefits of cardio fitness workouts for golfers
are many, chief among them: enhanced body tone
and weight maintenance; greater mobility in your
swing; and a more conditioned body, one less
prone to injuries. How about lasting longer
through the turn and making your last few holes as
good as possible? Endurance is the word, and we
need it for a better game.
Deep Water Running, For Example …
Here’s a thought: maybe it’s time to introduce
something new into your exercise program. A
friend of mine has done biking, walking and some
running over the years in the pursuit of cardiovas-
cular health. Recently she had an injury and spent
several months rehabbing. As part of her recov-
ery, she tried deep water running.
After first rehabbing to the point she could get into
the water for water fitness, my friend began a
weekly program with a water fitness specialist.
After warming up, she attached a floatation device
around her waist—such as vest or a noodle—so
her head would be above water. Then she began
running in water deep enough that her feet could-
n’t touch bottom.
After practicing this exercise, she found a decrease
stress on the joints as well as increased range of
motion. The water provided both resistance and
strength workouts. Deep water running is great
not only for rehab, but is also good for cross train-
ing and injury prevention. The activity is low im-
pact and provides great range of motion.
No matter what your fitness plan is, put your heart
into your routine this month so you’ll stronger on
the first tee this spring. Choose your activity, put it

2013 Gateway PGA Tournament Schedule
The Gateway PGA Tournament Committee is pleased to announce the schedule for
the upcoming season. The 2013 calendar presented a couple of challenges not faced
by the Section in recent years as the 2013 Sr PGA Championship comes to Bellerive
CC in May. After some juggling of dates and venues, all of the traditional Pro-Ams
have been retained, all Majors are scheduled, and there will be one less Pro-Open
than 2012. The biggest change is the moving of the Pro-Ladies to a Tuesday, June
25th, at St. Clair CC. Please make plans early to attend this event as we are going
back to a single 10 am shotgun start and with Tuesday being "Ladies Day" at most
clubs, might be an advantage to Members being able to put together teams to attend.
