GATE• A competitive exam for admission to post

graduate courses– More than 400 engineering colleges all over India

• GATE is conducted by the IITs and IISc• All Engineering graduates are eligible for GATE

The following categories are eligible– B.E. / B.Tech, MSc, MCA, AMIE

• 21 different papers in GATE – One for each stream: CS, EC, ME, Maths, etc

GATE Paper Pattern• Objective Type Test with multiple choice

questions• Time duration - 3 hours • 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100

marks– Technical: 55 questions, 85 marks– General Aptitude: 10 questions, 15 marks

• Negative marking – 33 %• Structure

– Q. 1 to Q. 25 : One mark Technical Questions– Q. 26 to Q. 55 : Two mark technical Questions– Q. 56 to Q. 60 : One mark Aptitude Questions– Q. 61 to Q. 65 : Two mark Aptitude Questions

GATE Results and Stipend• GATE is conducted on 2nd Sunday of February

every year and results are announced on 15th March

• GATE Result– Qualified / Not Qualified– Marks out of 100– All India Rank– Percentile– GATE Score (out of 1000)

• GATE Qualified candidates will be given admission based on their results

• Only GATE qualified students are eligible for stipend of Rs 8000 per month

– Stipend given for 2 years during master programme– Stipend given in all government and private colleges

GATE 2012• IIT Delhi was the organizing institute for GATE 2013• GATE 2012 was conducted on 12th February, 2012• The results were announced on 15th March• The GATE’12 score is valid for 2 years (GATE 10 was 1 year)

– Pre Final year students cannot write GATE 12

• 6.8 lakhs students appeared, highest ever • All streams had paper based tests except two

Post GATE Admission Process

• Apply to each Institute and department separately• The last date for application varies with Institute

– For IISc, the last date is one week from announcement of results– For IITs, the last date is one month from announcement of results

• Application for a department and Institute– Based on GATE result of the candidate– Based on interest in a specific specialization

• Admission Procedure varies with institute– Some have direct admission based on GATE Score– Some have test and interviews apart from GATE Score

• Admission Cutoffs – IISc and IITs : 98 Percentile Plus– NITs : Around 95 Percentile
