This issue of the first work appears to be wholly unrecorded. With early 20th-century bookplate. In very good condition, with only minor browning and spotting. Binding slightly rubbed and hinges cracked at the head. Very good copies of an unusually early example of a printed handbook for a practical trade.

The history and preparation of coffee2. C A DET DE VAU X, Antoine-Alexis and Charles-Louis C A DET. Dissertation sur le café; son historique, ses propriétés, et le procédé pour en obtenir la boisson la plus agréable, la plus salutaire et la plus économique; ...Paris, for the Bureau du Journal d’Economie Rurale, Mme. Huzard and Xhrouet, 1806. 12º. Contemporary blue boards. € 1250

First edition of a comprehensive treatise on coffee by the French chemist and pharmacist Antoine-Alexis Cadet de Vaux (1743–1828), considered a classic on the subject. It opens with an introduction, followed by a chapter narrating the history of coffee: the origins of the coffee bean and plant, the proper climate for the coffee plant, the coffee drinking culture and its introduction in Europe. The next chapter deals with the (beneficial) prop-erties of coffee, listing some ailments which can be recovered with drinking coffee. The next section, by Charles-Louis Cadet (1769–1821), Antoine-Alexis’s nephew, describes how to brew the perfect cup of coffee, also mentioning different methods of making coffee, like cold coffee or with alcohol. He also gives a chemical analysis of coffee. With a few small stains. Binding worn along the extremities. Overall in good condition.

The first part describes the various grapes cultivated in the Moselle department, as well as methods of cultivation, and introduces a new system of marcotting using iron wire instead of stakes. The subsequent parts are devoted to different steps in the winemaking process, from the picking of grapes to fertilization, with suggestions for improvement. In three tables the author shows the (financial) benefits of his system, and the plates depict his improved method of mar-cotting. The treatise includes a history of vit-iculture in the Moselle départment (Lorraine, France).Collignon d’Ancy was a member of the “Comice Agricole” at Metz.Good copy, with the author’s autograph signature on the back of the half-title.

On the abuse of alcohol, by a great German chronicler

and popular historiographer of the 16th century5. FR A NCK, Sebastian. Von dem greüwlichen Laster der Trunckenhayt ...[Augsburg, Heinrich Steiner, 1533?]. 4º. With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 × 12 cm) on title-page showing an elaborate banquet and a vomitting man, by H. Weiditz (the Petrarca master), decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. Early 19th-cen-tury shell-marbled boards. € 4500

One of at least three and possibly five editions that VD16 lists under 1533 of “On the horrible vice of drunkenness”, a treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages, probably first published in 1531. Kaczerowsky and others regard the present edition as the first, published in 1528. It is also of medical interest, since Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness. He attributed a variety of social ills to alcohol, including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. All of his works were placed on the index of prohibited books in 1559.Most of the editions with the 1531 date have 32 leaves, expanded to 38 leaves in one with the 1531 date and those with the 1533 date. Since the present edition also has 38 leaves, it seems likely to have been printed in 1533.With 5 pages of bibliographical notes in German on 3 leaves inserted before the title-page, the first 2, dated 1857, signed by the owner Friedrich Latendorf (1831–1898), who later edited Sebastian Franck’s erste namenlose Sprichwörtersammlung vom Jahre 1532 in getreuen Abdruck, 1876. They discuss the dates and order of the first editions and issues. With the inserted leaves crudely attached to the title-page with tape in the gutter margin, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor foxing.

Rare first edition of a charming little book on carving at the table, describing and illustrat-ing the more refined ways of carving, the order of serving, and the handling of food: poultry, hare, rabbit, pork, veal, lamb, mutton, venison, ham, lobster, fish, artichokes, cakes and sweet and savoury pies. It is one of the best and most extensively illustrated early books on culinary carving. The frontispiece shows a gentleman at dinner, with his servant carving a fowl in the Italian manner, where one holds it aloft with the fork and carves it in mid-air for all to see. The anonymous author, in the preface, notes that this is not the normal manner in the Netherlands, so he discusses both it and the normal manner of carving on a platter. The plates illustrate several carving techniques and include a large folding plate with forks and carving knifes. The book appeared 13 years before Joseph Moxon’s better known deck of cards with illustrated carving instructions. With early owner’s initials. With a tear in the folding plate repaired but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional minor stain or smudge. The slipcase is somewhat rubbed, but the binding itself is in fine condition. A rare and charming handbook of culinary carving, clearly and extensively illustrated.

A curious history of tobacco9. [GAV ELLI, Niccolo]. Storia distinta, e curiosa del tabacco concernente la sua scoperta, la introduzione in Europa, e la maniere di coltivarlo,...Pesaro, Niccolo Gavelli, 1758. 8º. With the title-page in first issue with “copiosa” (for “curiosa”) corrected with a slip reading “cur” pasted over the first three letters. Contemporary gold-tooled calf. € 1500

First edition, first issue, of a clear and curious history of tobacco, discussing its discovery, its introduction into Europe, and the method of cultivating, preserving and preparing it for use, with other very good and useful observations concerning the same. The preface announces that this book is being issued to provide practical as well as general information on tobacco at a time when it could be freely cultivated within the papal territories. It gives the usual historical and botanical details together with advice on tobacco farming. It provides essential information about the cultivation of tobacco, its nomenclature, the kinds grown in the Americas, manufacture of rolls, methods of planting practised in Virginia and Maryland, various simple phases of agronomics, construction of drying-sheds, the proper means of curing tobacco (as carried on in Virginia and Maryland), packaging of and contain-ers for tobacco, the methods of cultivation in vogue in France and Persia and, at some length, an account of the process of manufacturing snuff in Italy. There is, as well, a record of the prices of various kinds of tobacco under the late monopoly, the commerce in this commodity, current rates in Amsterdam, and the import and export duties established in Holland. The concluding section deals with the remedial virtues of tobacco, with references to the usual and lesser-known authorities.Front hinge weak. A fine and clean copy of a history of tobacco.

A rare work on the oil-bearing Chinese radish10. GR A NDI, Francesco de. Istruzione sulla coltura del rafano oleifero Cinese e relative manifatture dell’ olio.Torino, Fea, 1793. 8º. With an engraved folding plate of a machine used for the oil production. Contemporary wrappers charmingly decorated in pink. € 2200

Rare first edition of a treaty on the Chinese oil-bearing radish, by Francesco de Grandi. Wishing to extend the produc-tion of oil for the growing consumption, the Patriotica Societa of Milan decided to reward the person that would come with a method to achieve this. As Francesco de Grandi had heard of the production of oil from radish in China, described by Linnaeus, he decided to take the challenge and in 1787 sowed 12 seeds of the radish. His experiment was a great success, and he was rewarded. This work contains infor-mation about the properties of the radish, the best circumstances for sowing, the grain harvest, the preparation of the seed, the extraction and conservation of the oil. With a letterpress bookplate on paste-down. With a small stain on the title-page, otherwise in very good condition. Paper wrappers damaged along the spine and somewhat frayed along the margins.

Life-size watercolour of a great bustard (Otis tarda), ca. 1710/20

15. [OR NITHOLOGY ]. [Great bustard (Otis tarda)].[Northwest Germany?, ca. 1710/20]. Watercolour drawing on 2½ sheets of Imperial laid paper (129 × 57 cm as assembled). € 3500

A life-size watercolour drawing of a Great bustard (Otis tarda) cock, hanging from a hook by a cord threaded through its nostrils, presumably awaiting the cook’s assistants, who would have plucked it. The skilful artist remains unidentified. The drawing itself, from the hook (which bleeds off the paper at the head) to the tips of the claws, measures 126 cm and the bustard itself measures 110 cm from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail. Its plumage is predominantly light brown, with black stripes on the back and with the breast and the lower parts of the wings white. The hens were much smaller than the cocks, which are the heaviest flying birds in the world and the heaviest indigenous birds of any kind in Europe today. The drawing probably comes from the estate (the kitchen?) of a nobleman. The great bustard has become rare in northern Europe, with only a few hundred, largely confined to small parts of East Germany and western Poland, but there is still a larger population spread throughout Hungary. It is classified as vulnerable worldwide. In the early 18th century it had a much greater range, including much of Germany and England. In 1797 Thomas Bewick noted that it made “excellent eating ... as excellent a repast as our own domestic poultry, or even as the [American] turkey”. He therefore lamented that it had not been domesticated and foresaw that hunting might lead to its “total extinction” in England.Formerly folded. With a small worm hole in the neck of the turkey and a slightly larger one in the blank paper next to the neck, and an occasional minor tear on the old folds (some professionally reinforced on the back), but otherwise in very good condition. A magnificent ca. 1710/20 water-colour drawing of a Great bustard, depicted life-size.

Cautele medicorum no[n] inutiles.(Colophon: Lyon, Antoine Blanchard [and Laurent Hyllaire], 7 January 1525[=1526]. Small 4º (20 × 14 cm). Title-page with a 4-piece a woodcut border. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment; modern grey cloth clamshell box. € 8500

Third edition of a collection of three medical and gastronomical texts by two 15th-cen-tury Italian physicians. The first, Pillarium by Pantaleone di Confienza, is one of the earliest treatises dealing exclusively with pills as remedies for all kinds of diseases. The second, Summa lacticiniorum, by the same author, is the first treatise specifically devoted to cheese, a “landmark” in the literary discourse about cheese. “It outlines the variety of cheeses [and] in part two Pantaleone surveys the regional and local cheeses known to him, beginning in his own native northern Italy, … He continues his cheese itinerary through Savoie and across France” (Dalby). The third, a treatise on medical ethics by Gabriele Zerbi (1445–1505), aims to protect the integrity of physicians and the medical profession. With bookplate removed from pastedown and a manuscript place and date on title-page. Faint water stain in the head margin of the first ten leaves, minor ink stains on the first two leaves and the last, occasional other small stains and a tiny hole in the title-page; still in good condition. Binding very good, with a couple small stains.

Manuscript book of medicinal, culinary and pigment recipes in French Republican Bruges

18. PU Y ENBROUCK[?], Eugene[?]. Recueil de différentes sortes des liqueurs et specifications particulieres.Bruges, 1799. 8º. Manuscript in brown ink on laid paper, written in Dutch (even though the title-page is in French) in a small, neat Latin hand. Contemporary decorated paper wrappers. € 3500

A manuscript collection of 90 numbered and about 20 unnumbered recipes, some for medicines, others for foods, drinks and pigments. It includes tobacco, snuff, chocolate, brandy, liqueurs and other alcoholic drinks, fruit syrups, soups, teas and preparations of herbs and spices. The title-page indicates that they (apparently the prepared goods rather than the recipes) belonged to a merchant at Bruges. It provides a fascinating window into the trade in medicines, culinary preparations and pigments in Bruges under the French Republic (1794–1804). The 90 numbered entries end on the recto of leaf 26, but the 20 or so entries that follow to the verso of leaf 34 were probably written immediately or at least soon after, including most of the pigment recipes. At some later date further recipes were added in pencil on leaves 35 to 38. At an unknown date someone began to use the manuscript from the other side, writing in brown ink, but used only two pages, providing recipes for glue and beer. With some owner’s inscriptions. The fore-edge has been trimmed, occasionally just touching the text, but with no significant loss, very slightly browned and with an occasional marginal defect, but generally in good condition. The spine of the wrapper is damaged and repaired, and some of the sewing has come loose.

First edition of the Italian translation of a brief work on tobacco, including 14 “lessons” on how to smoke and snuff tobacco. It opens with an introduction, followed by a section on the origin of tobacco, the medical properties attributed to smoking and snuffing tobacco. The lessons deal with different types of tobacco, pipes, cigars, cigarettes, and tobacco boxes, and how to smoke tobacco without offending women. With an early owner’s inscription on the title-page. With some faint water stains, half-title pasted onto front wrapper. Paper wrappers damaged, especially along the spine.

On the lethal effects of tobacco in any form20. SILV ESTR I, Giuseppe Maria. Ragionamento sopra l’uso ed abuso del tabacco.Rome, Arcangelo Casaletti, 1773. 8º. Yellow wrappers (ca. 1900?). € 1250

Rare first and only edition of a treatise on the use and abuse of tobacco, according to its own title, though the author, the physician Giuseppe Maria Silvestri, regards nearly all use as abuse. Silvestri strongly opposes all use of tobacco for pleasure or in social activities, consid-ering it extremely dangerous and evil. He cites his own experiments injecting tobacco juice into the blood veins of animals, which rapidly caused convulsions and death. He also quotes extensively from previous medical writers and others citing deaths from its use as snuff or from smoking. Medicinal used carefully supervised by a knowledgeable physician he finds acceptable in cases of extreme need. Finally he declares that God put tobacco in America because it was not suited for use by Europeans. He nevertheless provides some information on its origins, introduction to Italy and preparation for use. With library stamp. Some minor and mostly marginal foxing, but still in good condition. A vociferous treatise against smoking.

Extremely rare first issue of this Italian publication on edible and poisonous fungi, with hand-coloured lithographed illustrations (not chromolithographs as stated in the title) and the author’s hand-written presentation inscription on the wrappers. The title used on the title-page differs slightly from that on the title-wrappers, omitting “cromo-litografíco”, and contains a dedication to Don Giacomo Beretta. It was reissued in 1846, with new title-wrappers.Folded, some foxing some and occasional stains, wrappers slightly soiled and tattered. Nonetheless still a good copy of this rare mycological work.

The medical properties of milk and the consequences of the use of snuff

23. V LOER S, M. Cogitata de lacte dulci et pulvere tabaci.–Pensées sur le lait doux et le tabac en poudre.Antwerp, Cornelius Martinus Spanoghe, 1783. 8º. With Latin and French text on facing pages. Modern half maroon textured cloth. € 1750

Rare first and only edition of a bilingual (Latin and French) work on the medical properties of milk and snuff, the latter made from pulverised tobacco leaves, by the otherwise unknown “licentiate in medicine”, M. Vloers. The first part of the work is a lengthy treatise arguing against the claim that fresh milk is the cause of bowel problems, and stating instead that milk is easily digestible, followed by a listing of the many medical attributes of milk. The second part discusses the effects of the use of snuff. “Those who make use of snuff, . . . are misled by the belief that this nicotian substance relieves them of mucus. But, he says, it has the same harmful effect as if one took a daily purgative” (Arents). The unpleasant reactions to the use of snuff, such as sneezing, sniffing and snorting, indicate that it is an unhealthy, unclean habit and some of the ailments likely to ensue from a habitual use of the powder are: vertigo, breast afflictions, heart trouble and congestion of the blood. Hypochondriacs and hysterical or very slender people are those worst affected by the use of snuff. So snuff should only be employed with caution, and should rarely be prescribed by physicians.Waterstains throughout the gutter and foot margins, running into the text. Reasonable copy of a rare work.

Arents 936; De Gulden Passer 22 (1944), p. 30; KVK/WorldCat (3 copies); Unicat (2 copies); not in STCV.

Contemporary blind-tooled calf in a panel design made with 2 rolls and triple filets, 2 brass clasps with engraved decoration, 2 brass catch plates. Rebacked, with new endpapers. € 7500

Rare issue of the most extensive Dutch edition of a popular book on medicine by Christoph Wirsung (ca. 1505–1571), covering all parts of the human body and all possible illnesses and ailments that can affect that particular part, together with the cures for those illnesses and ailments, mainly by means of herbs. It was first published in German (Heidelberg, 1568), became extremely popular, and was translated into Dutch by Carolus Battus. The present seventh edition was extensively revised, corrected and expanded, and added the two illustrated works by the German surgeon Wilhelm Fabry von Hilden (1560–1634), on severe gunshot and projectile wounds and on burns, including those caused by hot oil, hot water, red-hot iron, gunpowder and lightning, first published in Latin. The book also includes one of the earliest Dutch cookery books, apparently compiled by the translator Carolus Battus and first added in the second Dutch edition. It is the third printed Dutch-language cookery book known and the first published in what is now the Netherlands. It contains some 300 recipes for all sorts of food and drinks. With 17th-century and later owners’ inscriptions on title-page. With the general title-page somewhat worn, a small tear in the second leaf and some stains at the head of the second Von Hilden work, sometimes slightly affecting the running heads and one heading, but generally in very good condition, with further only an occasional minor spot or marginal water stain. The binding has been rebacked and given new endpapers, as noted, and the leather shows several repairs and patches, some using pieces of blind-tooled leather from other bindings, but the original tooling is still surprisingly clear.
