Rototilling your Garden!Rototilling your Garden!

Gardens come in all sorts of shapes! Squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and more!

I’m going to make mine a square!

I have to measure out four equal sides and measure the angle to make sure they are 90 degrees. These are called right angles.

We can also make rectangle and square beds in the garden for the seeds!

Putting up your FencingPutting up your Fencing

I want my square to be 10 by 10 feet and to have a three foot wide gate on one side. This means that I need to measure out 37 feet of fencing. ((4 sides x 10 feet)-3)=37

If I didn’t have enough fencing, I could use this equation to figure out what dimensions my garden should be. (4 sides x a ft)-3ft =Amount of available fencing or (Amount of available fencing+3ft)/4sides=a ft (where a =length in ft of sides) So if I had 21 ft of fencing, I could make a 6x6 garden. (21ft+3ft)/4sides=6 ft

We can also figure out the area of the garden by squaring the length of one side! So our 10x10 garden is 100 square feet!!! (10x10=100)

Buying the Seeds!Buying the Seeds!

Here is my shopping list for seeds:

A packet of zucchini seeds....$3.95 A packet of cucumber seeds....$3.95 2 packets of summer squash....$4.95 A packet of pumpkins....$3.95 A packet of carrots....$4.95 A packet of cauliflower....3.95 A packet of sunflowers...$4.95 2 packets of sweet peas....$4.95 A packet of mixed flowers....$3.95 A packet of snapdragons....$3.95 For a total of $53.40

We can also use multiplication to figure out the total cost. (6($4.95))+(6($3.95))=$53.40! or 6($4.95+$3.95)=$53.40!

Planting Cauliflower!Planting Cauliflower!

Each type of plant has to be buried at a specific depth, and spaced evenly along the row.

To make the rows we need to use string to make a straight line!

Then we have to dig holes that are 13mm deep and 15cm apart from each other. This is the same as about 1/2 an inch deep and 6 inches apart from each other!

Patterns with Bricks!Patterns with Bricks!

I want to lay down a brick walkway so that the paths don’t get muddy!

There are so many patterns to chose from, but I’m going to try making the basket weave. I have to use sets of two parallel bricks which are placed horizontally next to a set placed vertically. You just repeat this pattern the whole time!

Fractals!Fractals!

There are fractals everywhere in nature!

The type of cauliflower I am growing is a great example! When you zoom in on the plant, you see that it is made up of smaller patterns of the original shape of the plant.

You are growing complex geometric shapes and they taste great!!

Mixed Flowers!Mixed Flowers!

We have one packet of mixed flowers!

There are 12 seeds and 6 of them are poppies, 4 are violets and 2 are daisies.

If I planted only one seed, the probability of it being a poppy is 6 in 12 which is the same as 1/2, 50% or .5!

The probability of it being a violet is 4 in 12 which is the same as 1/3, 33% or .333!

And the probability of it being a daisy is 2 in 12 which is the same as 1/6, 16.6% or .1666!

I’m guessing it will be a poppy!

Plant Growth!Plant Growth!

Measuring your plant’s growth!!!

I’m going to make a chart where I can record the weekly growth of my plants!!!

I can measure in centimeters, inches, feet, popsicle sticks, hands or any other fun unit!

I might want to use smaller units like centimeters for tiny plants and larger units like hands for taller plants such as a sunflower!

Watering the GardenWatering the Garden

I water the garden twice a day! Once in the morning and once in the evening!

I water it for about 10 minutes each time and the hose pumps out about 9 gallons of water per minute. This means I pump out 180 gallons of water per day! (2(10 mins x 9 gallons))=180 gallons

That is 1,260 gallons a week! (180 gallons x 7 days)=1,260 gallons

And is about 5,040 gallons a month! (1,260 gallons x 4 weeks)= 5,040 gallons

That’s about 19, 708 liters a month, or 9,539 2liter bottles of soda!

sunflower seeds!sunflower seeds!

I want to know how many seeds are on one sunflower!

There are too many to count so I am going to estimate how many there are!

I know that there are about 10 seeds in an area about the size of a quarter so I am going to estimate that I could fit about 30 quarters on my sunflower so I think I must have about 300 sunflower seeds on each flower.

There are all sorts of 3D shapes to be found!

Tomatoes are a great example of spheres!

Carrots are upside down cones!

Cucumbers are ellipses!

Another fun shape is the star found inside an apple but it is a 2D shape.

Salad!Salad!

I am going to make a salad with all the vegetables I have grown!

I need half a cup of sliced carrots. (about 3 carrots)

1 cup of sliced cucumbers. (about 3/4 of a cucumber)

1 cup sliced tomatoes. (about 1 tomato)

1/2 a cup of sunflower seeds.(about 3/4 of a flower)

And 4 cups of lettuce. (about 2 small heads of lettuce)

After everything is washed and cut, toss it together and add some homemade balsamic vinaigrette! Yum!!!!!
