Copyright status: Material is owned by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and is copyrighted. Historical Note The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden was founded in 1926 as an educational and scientific display garden of California native plants, open to the public. Until 1939 when the Garden incorporated, it was known as the Blaksley Botanic Garden, and a group of trustees from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History oversaw its growth and development. Scope and Content Note The activities of the Garden from 1926 to 1975 are represented in this collection. They cover the directorships of plant ecologist Frederic Clements, who was sent by the Carnegie Institution to Santa Barbara to locate land for a botanic garden, the first ten years of creation and growth under Elmer and Ervanna Bissell’s direction; the development of horticultural research and public education under Maunsell Van Rensselaer’s fifteen years as Director; and the expansion of the research program under Director Katherine Muller from 1950-1973. The bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence with many botanists and horticulturists from around the country. The Garden has taken a leading role in growing a wide variety of native plants from many parts of the state, and much of the experiences of seed collecting, germination, and propagation is found in this correspon- dence. Also included are research files and drafts for books and articles published by Garden staff. Most extensive are files for the various editions of The Trees of Santa Barbara and Ceanothus. Future papers to be added to this collection, as they are processed, are those of Dara Emery, Plant Propagator and Breeder, 1955-1992; Ralph Philbrick, Director 1973-1987; and Clifton Smith, Herbarium Botanist, 1985- 1999.
