The need for environmentally friendly practices is embedded in the Town’s Strategic Plan. We have committed to ensuring we will explore innovation and partnerships for environmentally friendly practices when making decisions. However, to ensure we are creating a community that benefits not only current residents but future ones as well, we need everyone to make a commitment to make environmentally smart choices at home.
Therefore, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read the 2017 Collection Calendar. It is our hope that by reading the information and tips throughout this guide you are able to increase what you are recycling (Did you know that you can pre-arrange collection of large white goods?), and take advantage of the green bin program (Cut your waste in half!). There are also tips that will help you conserve energy and save money.
If you would like more information visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca/collectionfaqs. Thank you for continuing to make East Gwillimbury a green community and a great place to live.
Thank you,Mayor Virginia Hackson, Councillor James R. Young, Councillor Tara Roy-DiClemente, Councillor Marlene Johnston, Councillor Joe Persechini

Fats, oils and grease can have a serious impact on your home and the environment. When poured down the sink, drain or toilet, they can clog your pipes and our sewers. Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking, including:butter and margarine, cooking oils (including deep frying oils), meat fats, salad dressings, sauces, gravies, shortening and lard.
PROPER Disposal • Fats, oils and grease are organic waste that belong in your green bin• Wait for fats, oils and grease to cool and harden, then scrape into
the green bin• Use a small amount of paper towel to help wipe and absorb the
liquid before placing it in your green bin• Liquid cooking oil can also be dropped off at a York Region waste
depot to be recycled into biodiesel

#PlanPrepareEnjoy
For many families, shopping and preparing meals comes with a lot of food waste. On average, York Region households throw away $1,500 worth of food each year. Here are some simple tips to reduce food waste and save time and money:
Plan ahead and shop with a list (check your cupboards in advance to avoid buying duplicates) Buy only what you need; bulk buying or buying on sale is only cost effective if the product is actually usedChoose recipes you can make ahead, giving you more time with your family and friends Serve smaller portions; preparing or setting out more than they can eat is more food wasted Freeze leftovers to enjoy later; soups, stews, pasta and casseroles freeze well
to save time, money and reduce wasteways5

DST ends (turn clocks back onehour at bedtime)
Did you know that if every household in Canada switched to cold water to wash their clothes, approximately 1.5 billion kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions could be saved?
Metal Item Recycling & Bulky Item Pick-upLarge metal items (White Goods) such as appliances, barbecues (no propane tanks), bed frames, furnaces, hot water heaters, metal bath tubs, storage sheds and bicycles must be recycled. Call 1.866.421.5625 to arrange for a special curbside collection. For safety, remove doors from fridges, freezers and ovens. If a special collection is not booked, metal items will not be collected.Metal appliances and scrap metal can also be dropped off at select York Region depots (see page 3 for details).
Bulky Items such as Upholstered Furniture, Mattresses and Carpeting, etc. These items may be placed at curbside for pick-up on your regular bi-weekly garbage collection day. Garbage Collection Week

Green Bin and Blue Box are collected WEEKLY. Garbage is picked up every other week on your regular day in the weeks that begin with the purple arrow indicator.
Your new calendar will be delivered in early January 2018
Have a question? Consult the back cover.
There are approximately 30 to 35 million real Christmas trees sold in North America every year. Real Christmas trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. At most farms, up to three seedlings are planted for every real Christmas tree harvested. Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics.
