#1 LaunchingLaunch GarageBand.

You may need to download itfrom the App Store at no cost.

For that you need to log in withyour Apple ID, search forGarageBand and wait for thedownload to finish.

#2SoundsAfter launch, the app promptsyou to download essential sounds. These can be optionallyimplemented into your project.

The download starts upon firstlaunch but is not necessary fora simple audio recording.

After the download finishes, the system prompts you toenter your user password.

#3 What kindof recordingAfter the sounds finish installing, you have to tellGarageBand which kind ofproject you wish to work on.

#4 Audio sourcesIf you add an audio source to your computer, GarageBand will recognize it and will ask you if you want to use it.

If this dialog box does not appear or you another audiosource is already connected, you can choose it from theInput Device section. It is herethat you can also choose an output device.

If you are using a laptop oranother computer like an iMac with an integrated microphone, you can also choose its audiosource.

You may also use a (wireless) headset. It is recommendedthat you use a wired variant, asBluetooth latency may be a problem during production.

#5RecordingYou can start recording with the red circle button.

The digital numbers in the title bar represents beats per minute, for a pure voice recording you might consider switching to a time based format.

You also have the choice of using a metronome and a count in. You can toggle them on and off next to the time window.

#6 Audio levelThe audio level needs to besufficient.

A few test recordings are a reasonable procedure to makesure your voice can be heardadequately and as intended.

A prominent waveform needsto be visible, as seen in thisexample.

#7 EditingAfter the recording is done youcan edit your track(s).

You might want to removeunwanted passages or pausesor change the general order ofthe recording.

With the keystroke command+Tyou can split the region at theplayhead. Look for thebeginning of the moment youwant to change and split thetrack. Then look for the end, and perform a second cut. Proceed to delete the region. The resulting pause in thetimeline can be eliminated via a simple drag of the audio trackfrom the right side.

#8 Finishingthe recordingYou can choose betweencompressed formats such asMP3 or uncompressed formatssuch as WAVE or AIFF in caseyou want to further performedits in another application orhave another audio specialistwork on your file.

In most cases a compressedMP3 with a bitrate of 256 kBit/s is enough fordistribution.

#9 Troubleshooting

Sometimes you may not be ableto choose the desired audiosource in GarageBand. For thatyou open up the general systempreferences for all audiosources and pick your audiosource from here.

You can check your audio levelwith the visual audio meter andget a general idea if a givensignal is present.
