1.0 Preamble

Gangadhar Dasa was taught to the scribe by one of his Tantrik Gurus who was also an excellent astrologer. Although it sounds odd today but the fact remains unaltered that astrology was never the subject of great astronomers but of Siddha Tantriks who were also master astronomers and the scriptures bear the testimony of Tantrik astronomy in plenty. In Siddha Tantrik cults various types of Dasa systems and predictive techniques are prevalent which are now not found in the standard classical texts of astrology and on account of their oath for maintaining secrecy (Gopniyata), at all cost they do not divulge it to uninitiates. Scribe has already discussed few of these Dasa systems elsewhere and Gangadhar Dasa is an attempt in the same series of works.

The scribe learnt Damodar Dasa and Gangadhar Dasa (both Rasiyadi & Grahadi) from late Sri Somnath Jee Maharaj, a great Tantra Sadhaka of Nath Sampradaya having vast knowledge of astrology about 15 years ago and since then it has been testified on several charts. Gangadhar Dasa involves the calculation of Deha and Jeeva Rasi of Lagna; whereas, Samharika and Pratipalika Rasi are worked out for computation of Damodar Dasa. The calculation of Deha and Jeeva or Samharika and Pratipalika Rasi as well as Lalitha Lagna etc are entirely different and not found elsewhere. These are the specialities of these Dasa systems and will be elaborated in subsequent discussion in right context and perspectives.

The names of Dasa systems prevalent among the astrologers of the Tantrik cult are mostly dedicated to the names of Gods and Goddesses such as Bhuvaneshwari Dasa, Maheshwari Dasa, Rajeshwari Dasa, Damodar Dasa, Rudra Dasa and so on. Gangadhar is also the name of lord Shiva and this Dasa system is either christened after the name of Lord Shiva or the exponent of this Dasa system was a great Shaiva Sadhska. The last possibility can be that the name of the Acharya/sage who developed this Dasa was Gangadhar and this Dasa has become popular after his name.

Gangadhar Dasa is both Rasiyadi as well as Grahadi and in this paper Rasiyadi Gangadhar Dasa is being discussed. In both the types of Gangadhar Dasa i.e. Rasiyadi and Grahadi the total Dasa duration happens to be 84 years. Rasiyadi type is slightly simple because each sign has the operating period for 7 years but in Grahadi type the distribution of 84 years among nine planets is very interesting. That would be discussed in other separate paper in future.

The beauty of this Dasa is that it comprises of the calculation of Deha and Jeeva Rasi in an entirely different manner and the order of succession of various signs in Dasa pattern does not follow any given type of chakra described by the earlier savants in standard classical texts. Secondly, this Dasa takes into account the two vital divisional charts namely Dreshkana and Navamsha pulled to the distant belt of Nakshatras. But it is not a Nakshatra Dasa. However; it is clear from the subsequent discussion that the commencement of this Dasa system contains the vibrations of different belts cut through the different cross section of the zodiac.

Since, this Dasa is not found in the available texts and is being produced first time; scribe has endeavoured his level best to explain it with different set of events of the same natives to justify its applicability and efficacy. Readers may kindly apply them on the events known to them for various nativities to verify the veracity of its efficacy.

2.0 Rationality of 84 years Dasa Duration

Before embarking upon the actual discussion on Gangadhar Dasa it would be pertinent to tell few things which would not be out of place or digression from the main topic. Dasa duration of 84 years is found only in Chaturshiti‐Sama Dasa dealt in BPHS where Dasa of lunar nodes have been dropped and each of the seven planets have been allotted Dasa duration of 12 years. One of the three durations (Trikoot) of Mandook Dasa which has been already discussed exhaustively with numerous examples elsewhere also has a total Dasa duration of 84 years. But that does not seem to be the case here. The scribe with his little knowledge and reasoning power tried to explore the reasons for fixing total Dasa duration as 84 years in this case and the same is placed below for the critical scrutiny of the learned readers.

• In the spiritual philosophy of Vaidik theology it is believed that the soul saunters through 84 Yonis to qualify itself for begetting human form and; therefore, the figure 84 becomes quite significant in this respect as astrology is founded on the pillars of concept like immortality of soul and reincarnation. • Number seven is very important from esoteric point of view as can be appreciated from the use of term Sapta like sapta‐rishi, sapta‐sindhu, sapta‐bhuvan, sapta‐swara, sapta‐rashmi, sapta‐ jihva, sapta‐padi and so on and so forth. Looking into the esoteric imports of number seven it is quite probable that the Dasa duration of each sign of the zodiac was kept 7 years which for the 12 signs gives a total of 84 years.

• The duration of Yogini Dasa is 36 years and its double (two cycles) gives a figure of 72 years. The total Dasa duration of Kala‐Chakra Dasa is also 72 years. As is evident from the description of BPHS both of these Dasa systems are very important. Taking a lead from this if one year for each sign is added into this figure (72) the total becomes 84 years (72 + 12 = 84). • Among the various types of Nakshatra Dasa given in BPHS, Vimshottari and Ashtottari Dasa system is mostly in vogue all over the country. One fourth of the total Dasa duration for VDS and ADS gives a figure of 57 years (120 + 108 = 228/4 = 57). In other half of the average of VDS and ADS gives a figure of 57 years (120 + 108 = 228/2 = 114; 114/2 = 57). Half of the average of Vimshottari, Shodshottari, Dwadshottari and Ashtottari Dasa also gives the same figure (120 + 116 + 112 + 108 = 456/4; 114/2 = 57). There are 27 Nakshatra in the Bhachakra and if considering one year for each Nakshatra is added into 57 we get a figure 84 years (57 + 27 = 84). • Numerically we may say that the Dasa duration of VDS, which has been so much eulogised in the BPHS, also gives a number 3 (120 years) and this Dasa also has a duration (84 years) that gives the number 3. Elsewhere, the scribe has explained the calculation of Yuga that again gives a number 3 (1200 years). Thus, the great principle of triplicity seems to be inherently jutted into this Dasa system.

Whatever may be the actual reason, it becomes quite apparent that 84 years of Dasa duration must have been kept by the sages on the basis of various unknown factors out of which above listed reasons can be only few probabilities. Learned readers may kindly ponder over it continuously to find out some more important reasons for keeping the total Dasa duration of 84 years.

3.0 Commencement of Dasa

Lagna is the main fulcrum for start of Gangadhar Rasi Dasa and it begins with the stronger between the Deha and the Jeeva Rasi of Lagna. Here in this system the determination of Deha and Jeeva signs are done on entirely different technique which has nothing to do with the Deha and Jeeva Rasi established in KCDS (Kal‐Chakra Dasa System) and the students need not get confused with that. Sometimes, Deha and Jeeva Rasi becomes the same here and in that case the Gangadhar Dasa would commence with the same sign.

3.1 Deha Rasi • First, note down the Navamsha dispositor of the lord of the rising Dreshkana. • Note down the Nakshatra dispositor of that Navamsha dispositor. • Note down the sign occupied by that Nakshatra dispositor in Dreshkana chart.

That sign is the Deha Rasi of Lagna.

3.2 Jeeva Rasi • Note down the Dreshkana dispositor of the lord of rising Navamsha • Note down the Nakshatra dispositor of that Dreshkana dispositor. • Note down the sign occupied by that Nakshatra dispositor in Navamsha chart. That sign is the Jeeva Rasi of Lagna.

4.0 Judgement of Strength

The techniques to decide the stronger between the two signs are same as described in Jaimini Upadesha Sutra which can be summed up as under:‐

1. The sign having a planet is stronger than the sign which has no planet. 2. If both the signs under consideration for the purpose of comparison of strength are having

planets then the sign having more number of planets is deemed stronger. 3. If the number of planets placed in both the signs is same then the sign occupied by its own

lord or an exalted planet is considered stronger. 4. In case the situation still remains

undecided then the decision is made on the basis of natural strengths. Fixed signs are stronger than moveable signs and dual signs are stronger than the fixed signs.

5. If situation is same then the strength is decided on the basis of strength of the lords of those signs under consideration.

These criteria for assessment of strength are not applied in totality but stepwise, one after the other, till the strength becomes decided. In other words the further exploration would stop at the point where strength stands decided.

5.0 A Word On Dreshkana Chart

This Dasa involves erection of Navamsha and Dreshkana charts for finding out the Deha and Jeeva Rasi of Lagna. The Dreshkana chart is usually drawn wrongly by astrologers. Many authors have suggested different types of Dreshkana chart in their books which is an absurd suggestion because there has to be only one chart for one division of the zodiac. Long back late Sri A D Pathak and few other scholars raised this point through TOA. The scribe wrote about the correct Dreshkana chart more than one and half decade ago in the pages of TOA (Times of Astrology). The same is again elaborated by the scribe in his separate essay on Dreshkana Dasa. It is as per the suggestions made in BPHS and by Kali Dasa. They are same and not contradictory. Unfortunately, great Pt. G K Ojha also failed to take note of this fact while suggesting correct D/3 chart in his books in his attempts to reach actual purports Parivriti Trayam Tesham Meshadah Kramso Bhavet. It is a different matter that it has been listed by the name of some deity or family elder by an author in his book without any justification about its correctness. However; that hardly matters and the students must use the correct D/3 chart for working on this Dasa system. At the cost of repetition the correct Dreshkana chart is being once again given below as the same has been followed in the illustrated examples.

6.0 Maha Dasa or Main Period's Sequence

The order of succession for signs in Dasa sequence of Gangadhar Rasi Dasa is slightly different and peculiar when compared with other types of Rasi Dasa. It is a mixture of signs placed in 5th (trinal) and 7th (cardinal) positions intervened by the signs of 11th position and 8th position and the resumption of the original motion in reverse manner. For example, if the Dasa starts with Aries the next sign will be Leo (5th) followed by 7th sign of Leo i.e. Aquarius; then further 5th sign of Aquarius i.e. Gemini again followed by the 7th sign of Gemini i.e. Sagittarius to be followed by its 5th sign i.e. Aries. But the Dasa has already started with Aries. As such, the 11th sign of Sagittarius i.e. Libra is considered. The next sign would be the 8th sign from Libra i.e. Taurus. After this, Dasa would tend to resume its old course in reverse manner. So, the next Dasa after Taurus would be of the 7th sign of Taurus i.e. Scorpio followed by 5th sign from Scorpio i.e. Cancer; then 7th sign from Cancer i.e. Capricorn; then 5th sign from Capricorn i.e. Virgo then again 7th sign from Virgo i.e. Pisces. Thus, the Dasa started with Aries and ended with Pisces. Similarly the Dasa starting with Taurus would end on Aries Dasa and in this manner the cyclic continuity of signs in Dasa sequence is maintained. This course of movement is identical for all the signs and students must carefully note them to work out the correct pattern of signs operating in Gangadhar Dasa. For ease of the students’ order of Dasa starting with various signs is given below in tabular form.

7.0 Marjar and Shishumar Dasa

From the above description and the table (above) it can be clearly noticed that for the 6th and 7th Dasa, reckoning has changed to 11th and 8th signs respectively after which the Dasa course is resumed in reverse way. These two Dasas that is 6th and 7th Dasa are quite critical and the motion followed here is called Marjar (11th) and Shishumar (8th). They are considered to be troublesome Dasa despite accrual of any amount of name, fame and gains. The native has to pass through lots of trials and tribulations during the operation of these two Dasa. Even if these signs are auspiciously disposed their operation would prove to be calamitous and troublesome. However; the native would pass through excruciating pains and traumas during the operation of these signs if they are malevolently disposed in the birth map. It does not necessarily always indicate failures and woes but certainly gives indication about tough times. Even if the success comes during operation of these Dasa it is always hard earned.

That is quite logical also because this Dasa operates normally when the natives are in the age group of 40 to 50 years which is the time when most of us struggle maximum in our life. This is the time when people normally strive to establish themselves in their areas of activities and that is always full of challenges. Even if they become successful the success does not come easily and numerous obstacles need to be overcome with infrangible determination and stupendous efforts. May be on account of these facts the above two Dasa are considered to be virulent and turbulent in life.

8.0 Antar‐Dasa or Sub‐periods

Here the sequence of operation of different signs in sub‐period under the main period of any sign is slightly different. It follows the course of Maha Dasa of that sign for which sub‐period is to be seen. For example; say, the Dasa at birth was Aries and we wish to see the sub‐period details under the main‐period of Sagittarius i.e. 5th Dasa. Then the sequence of operation signs in the sub‐period of Sagittarius would be as per the course given at sl. no. 9 of the above table for Sagittarius sign. If the sub‐period under the main period of Cancer i.e. 9th Dasa is to be seen then the order of succession of sign will as given at sl. no. 4 in above table for Cancer sign. This has to be followed in all the cases.

9.0 Balance of Dasa

Like every Dasa system, balance of Dasa operating at birth is required to be calculated for Gangadhar Dasa also. Unfortunately, the savants dealing with Rasiyadi Dasa ignore this point for inexplicable reasons. Here, for this purpose, the lord of the sign with which the Dasa starts is taken into consideration. If the Dasa starts with the Deha Rasi of Lagna then the lord of Deha Rasi is considered and if it starts with the Jeeva Rasi then the lord of Jeeva Rasi is taken.

The degree covered by that lord in Nakshatra is noted and the ratio is calculated. The Dasa duration for each sign is 7 years and the elapsed period at birth is computed in the same ratio. It is

then converted into years, months and days. The figures thus obtained are subtracted from 7 years and the result gives the balance of Dasa of the sign operating at birth in years, months and days.

It can be done in following steps:‐ • Convert the degrees and minutes etc traversed by the said lord in the said Nakshatra into

minutes. • Divide the total minutes thus obtained by 800. • Multiply the quotient with 7 (years). • Convert the product into years, months and days. • Deduct the same from 7 years. • Remainder gives the balance of Dasa at birth.

Suppose the total minutes traversed by the lord of the sign with which Dasa is to commence is N. This would be divided by 800 (the value of Nakshatra in minutes). It is then multiplied by 7. So, the elapsed period would be = N / 800 X 7 As such, the balance of Dasa at birth would be = 7 ‐ {N / 800 X 7}. It would be clearer from the working done for illustrated examples.

10.0 Computation of Gangadhar Dasa

Following steps may be taken to work out the Gangadhar Dasa for any birth map

• Draw the Navamsha and Dreshkana chart correctly from the longitude of Lagna and other planets for the birth chart under consideration.

• Find out the Deha and Jeeva Rasi of Lagna as per 3.1 & 3.2 • Determine the stronger sign between Deha and Jeeva Rasi of Lagna as per 4.0 • Note down the Maha Dasa sequence as per the table under 6.0 and for Bhukti or Antar‐

Dasa follow the suggestion given under 8.0 • Work out the balance of Dasa at birth as per 9.0 • Proceed with the interpretation of an event occurred under any Dasa and Bhukti.

Example No. 1

The chart taken below for the purpose of discussion belongs to Barack Obama who is the 44th president of USA. His birth particulars as given below have been taken from an article of SA (Vol. 4) discussed by our senior astrologer Sri Iranganti Rangacharya. Materialisation of following important events taken from internet is to be examined with the help of Gangadhar Rasi Dasa. Only those events have been taken whose months of manifestation; if not exact date, could be found and the events with only years have been ignored as they do not fit in the scheme of better accuracy. Here, in all the interpretations, use of Chara Karaka has been deliberately avoided because of obvious reasons. As is the case with Dreshkana charts, so is the case with Chara Karaka and Arudha evaluation. While the former is erected wrongly, the later is computed wrongly. Hope, the readers would excuse the scribe for the same. However, this has been dealt in in his forth coming book "Karaka‐Navamsha Dasa".

Gangadhar Dasa would commence with the stronger between the Capricorn (Deha) and Sagittarius (Jeeva). While, Capricorn is occupied by Saturn and Jupiter, Sagittarius is planetless. Therefore, Capricorn is here stronger than the Sagittarius and the Dasa would begin with Capricorn sign.

Balance of Dasa at Birth The lord of Capricorn, Saturn, is in Uttarashadha Nakshatra where it has travelled 5 degree 21 minutes. So, Nakshatra ratio is 321/800 = 0.40125 Duration of each Dasa here is 7 years. As such, Elapsed Dasa in same proportion 0.40125 X 7 = 2.80875 This is equivalent to 2 years 9 month and 21 days. Therefore, balance of Dasa at birth is 4 years 2 months and 9 days.

Obama met his wife, Michelle Robinson, in June 1989, when he was employed as a summer associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidely Austin. Assigned as Obama's adviser, Robinson joined him at group social functions. They began dating latter that summer and became engaged in 1991.

At that time Virgo Dasa was in operation. The sign Virgo represents the luck of the native and is also reckoned 7th from the Dara Pad. Its lord Mercury and the lord of Dara Pad Jupiter (Pisces) are in mutual aspect enjoining the vibrations of Lagna and the 7th house. The love affair between Obama and Robinson started during the operation Taurus Bhukti under Virgo Dasa. The 5th house also represents lovers and paramours. Taurus being identical with the 5th house of the native carried all the basic ingredients of love affairs and in its operation Obama met Michelle Robinson. This love affair was bound to be intensely serious for marriage because the 5th Pad falls in 7th house and the lord of Dara Pad, Jupiter is aspecting both 5th house as well as the 7th house. This was almost destined as the Arudha of the 9th house falls in the 5th house identical with Taurus sign. The couple got married after about three years of dating on 3rd October, 1992 when Aquarius was operating in sub‐period of Virgo.

The chart taken up for discussion below belongs to famous actress Loni Anderson who had four marriages and three divorce. Her birth particulars; as given in SA Vol.4, on page 209 is given below. We do not have date/month of her first marriage and divorce nor the date/month of the birth of her first child Deidra Hoffman. Other marital events are as under

Gangadhar Dasa would commence with the stronger between the Scorpio (Deha) and Cancer (Jeeva). While, Scorpio is not occupied by any planet, Sun is placed in Cancer. Therefore, Cancer is here stronger than the Scorpio and the Dasa would begin with Cancer sign.

Balance of Dasa at Birth The lord of Cancer, Moon, is in Ardra Nakshatra where it has travelled 12 degree 47 minutes. So, Nakshatra ratio is 767/800 = 0.95874. Duration of each Dasa here is 7 years. As such, Elapsed Dasa in same proportion 0.95874 X 7 = 6.71118. This is equivalent to 6 years 8 month and 16 days. Therefore, balance of Dasa at birth is 0 years 3 months and 14 days.

Before starting the actual discussion it is important to mention here that this chart has been purposely taken as it contains the case of repeated marriage and the students often feel flustered to decide as to which houses must be considered for 2nd, 3rd and 4th marriages etc. Standard books of astrology are not very clear on such suggestions and the savants apply the principles based on their experience backed by sound logics to rebut their views. The available views prevalent among the savants are listed as under

• As per one school of thought the first marriage is to be seen from the 7th house, 2nd marriage from 9th house, 3rd marriage from 11th house, 4th marriage from Lagna and so on and so forth. The principal logic behind operation of this principle is that 2nd wife would be like younger sister to the first wife, 3rd wife as younger sister to the 2nd wife and so on. This can apply only if all the wives live peacefully and cordially. But different wives seldom live as elder and younger sisters. On the other hand invisible animosity always exists in their relationships and dealings. • So, keeping the above facts of inimical relationship in mind, scholars of other schools of thought have suggested that the first marriage should be judged from the 7th house, 2nd marriage from 12th house, 3rd marriage from 5th house, 4th marriage from 10th house and so on. • Obviously, the above two principles can not be applicable for the ladies entering into 2nd, 3rd or 4th marriages. This phenomenon is quite common in the western countries and the current example taken for discussion falls into this category. To handle such a situation the argument advanced is that each successive spouse is the follower of the previous spouse. Therefore, 2nd marriage is to be seen from the

In Vaidik paradigm the first wife is called Ardhangini (better‐half) and other wives are called Rati‐Vardhini (instruments for extra carnal gratification). This can be applicable to all the successive spouses for both the male and female natives no matter in what fashion that is acquired. Her second marriage was to actor Ross Bickell on 28 of January 1974 when Capricorn under Capricorn was in operation. Capricorn is identical with her 6th house denoting the follower of the first husband for the purpose of matrimony. Since the Arudha Lagna falls in the 11th house the elements of eternal friendship was bolstered and fructified through Aquarius in the form of 3rd marriage.

Cancer is occupied by Lagna lord Sun and is identical with 12th house i.e. marital affairs. It may please be noted that Reynolds accused her for such affairs in the divorce suit as main reason for separation which Anderson has also not concealed in her book.

She was again married for the 4th time with Bob Flick on May 17, 2008 when Aries Dasa was in operation. Aries is identical with luck and carries the currents of another marriage as has been explained in the beginning. The event occurred during the last Bhukti i.e. Pisces. Pisces is identical with 8th house denoting carnal pleasures and that has come to pass through a marriage for securing stability. Its Pad has again gone to Gemini signifying eternal friendship.
