Fashion WeekPorts Runway: Fashion Tips from the Pros
Just because the team, game day staff, concession staff and front of-fice staff wear uniforms on Game Days doesn’t mean they are lacking in fashion sense.
In fact, to prove how knowledgeable the Ports are about the latest fash-ion fads (or even past fads), they are hosting the 2nd Annual Fashion Week, from Wednesday April 29 to Saturday, May 2.
Fans can enjoy Jorts with the Ports (April 29), Prom Gone Wrong (April 30) and Canadian Tuexdo Night (May 2). All games are set for 7:05 and there are post-game fireworks on May 2.
But to fully enjoy Fashion Week, here are a few tips from the pros:
5) Put on your new jorts and enjoy feel-ing the air circulate around your legs.
How to Make “Jorts”Jorts are jean shorts which were made from full-length jeans, not jeans originally designed and crafted as a pair of shorts.
1) First, take a pair of full-length jeans. Put them on and decide the proper length for your jorts. Make a mark on the pants to denote the length1
2) Remove jeans and spread them out on a flat surface.
3) Take a pair of scissors and cut evenly across the leg at the mark you made. Cut slowly and allow the threads to fray. 2
3
4) Once the jeans are cut into shorts, run your fingers across the newly cut edge and tease out any threads to hang as fringe. 4
5
A Canadian Tuexdo is the faux pas of wearing double denim—a denim shirt or jacket with denim jeans. Can you out-dress these celebrities?

One on One
KP: With baseball season in full swing by May, how many Mother’s Days have you spent at the ballpark? Has that been a part of your family’s Mother’s Day traditions? MF: Life has always been at the ballpark! In addition to Justin’s baseball, our oldest Jillian, played four years of varsity softball for East Union High School in Manteca, as well as travel ball. My husband Randy, coached Jillian, so it was mostly me who traveled with Justin when he was younger.
KP: Were you a big baseball fan before Justin started playing baseball? MF: The funny thing is, I was and still am, a huge Oakland A’s fan! I still have ticket stubs from back in the 70’s when I was young. At age 12, my little sister and I used to ride BART and sit in the bleachers at the Oakland Coliseum. I can still remember walking from BART through the neighborhood to the park, long before they had the over crossing. I loved watching Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando and Reggie Jackson play back in the “old days”. We have taken our kids to the Ports games for some years. Justin once threw at the first pitch during his Northgate Little League days at Billy Hebert Park. So to have him on the field, in a Ports uniform, it is pretty surreal.
KP: Do you plan on being at Banner Island Ball-park on Mother’s Day this season? If so, what will it mean to you to be present with your son on the active roster of the local pro team? MF: I definitely hope to be at the park with my family on Mother’s Day. (We have a previous commitment that I’m trying to get out of!) If all goes well, I’ll be there! Most of the time it’s hard to really believe that Justin is playing professional baseball! To have him close to home is the best!
KP: How have you worked to support your son in his career? MF: My husband and I have always supported our kids in everything they have done. We have always participated in their sports, whether it was softball or baseball. Randy always coached our kids and I was team mom on many occasions. We were lucky enough to see a few of games when Justin played at Oklahoma State and even traveled to Vancouver and Kane County as vacations, to see him play with the A’s. Now I feel like he is back in high school because of location. We can go to practically all of the games!
KP: What qualities does he have that he has got-ten from you? MF: Justin has my even temperament. He rarely gets upset or frustrated with himself, but I always joke that he got MY athletic ability (if you really knew me, you’d know I wasn’t an athlete!)
KP: What makes you most proud of Justin? MF: When I talk about Justin, although I am extremely proud of his baseball ability, I am even more proud of his kindheartedness. He is truly a nice boy!
KP: How important is a mother’s influence in a child’s sports career? Does it change as the child progress from little league to high school to college to professional? MF: My role in Justin’s sports career is making sure everything runs smoothly. From his finances, to his meals, to making sure his uniform was clean, it’s Mom who keeps things going! Nothing has changed now that he is a “professional”. I still have to tell him when to pay his car payment and leave leftovers ready for him after the games.
KP: Have you networked with the mothers of the other players? If so what’s the best part about that social networking? MF: Corey Brown and Justin were both drafted by the A’s out of Oklahoma State. I had met Corey’s mom Kathy when we traveled back to watch Justin play in Bedlam series against University of Okla-homa. We became good friends and I communicated with her by email since she lives in Tampa, FL. When the boys both played in Chicago, we would email “shout out’s” via the Kane County email! It’s really great to have a common bond and share experi-ences. Most of the boys on the team live outside of the area but hopefully we will be able to meet other parents as they come watch their boys play. KP: What’s the best Mother’s Day gift you’ve ever received? MF: Probably something made by the kids when they were little. I always loved the handprints or something with their school picture on it!
KP: What’s been the most fulfilling part of being a mother? What’s the most fulfilling part about being the mother of a professional athlete? MF: The most fulfilling part of being a mom is know-ing that you raised wonderful kids. Both of my kids are kind hearted, honest, well-rounded adults. For Justin, as far as the professional part, we haven’t let that effect him, home tends to be very humbling, if you know what I mean!
