MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.62 ERA) vs. LHP Ryan Hartman (0-1, 14.73 ERA) Myrtle Beach Pelicans (33-25) at Buies Creek Astros (32-26) BIRDS SOAR TO TOP IN DE FACTO TWIN BILL SWEEP Myrtle Beach won Sunday’s suspended game 8-5 before shung out Buies Creek 1-0 in Monday’s scheduled contest to vault into sole possession of first place in the Southern Division. With the Pelicans leading 8-5, Sunday’s contest was suspended in the middle of the 10th inning due to rain. Once play was resumed on Monday, Dillon Maples fired a scoreless boom of the 10th inning to seal the win and pull the Birds into a first-place e with the Astros. In Monday’s regularly scheduled contest, Mike Rucker, who was making his first career start, tossed five innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander struck out six against one walk. Myrtle Beach’s only run of the game came in the fiſth inning on a P.J. Higgins sacrifice fly. On the tail of Rucker, Kyle Miller pitched four scoreless innings for the save. A TALE OF TWO CITIES By winning the compleon of Sunday’s suspended game 8-5 and then clipping Buies Creek 1-0 in Monday’s scheduled contest, the Pelicans have slingshot themselves into sole possession of first place in the Southern Division - the first me all year the Birds have found themselves alone in the division’s top perch. Prior to yesterday, Myrtle Beach hadn’t even shared a bit of first place since April 7, the season’s second day, when the Birds were 2-0. The Pelicans have won five in a row and eight of 11 heading into Tuesday’s contest. BROKEN BATS The Pelicans’ offense has really struggled this season, ranking either last or second-to-last in the league in bang average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. The Birds also rank no beer than fourth in any other offensive category besides home runs (T-2nd). However, Myrtle Beach places fourth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying offensive numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans’ ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive stascs is hing with runners in scoring posion. The Birds are bang just .244/.305/.372 (.677 OPS) overall. However, with runners in scoring posion, that line magically rises to .275/.335/.398 (.733 OPS). The bad news for Myrtle Beach, or, maybe, the good news, is that nearly every single team across every single level of baseball posts similar overall numbers to their lines with runners in scoring posion. GAME OF THRONES Over their run of a league-high six consecuve postseason appearances, the Pelicans have won the Southern Division in six of the 12 halves. With a 33-25 record right now, Myrtle Beach is perched atop the division, but just one game ahead of Buies Creek and two in front of Carolina. Over this magical run for the Pelicans, the club has seen Carolina League division winners has total an average of exactly 41 wins per half (984 wins over 24 halves between the two divisions). That means that over the half’s final 12 games, Myrtle Beach would have to go 8-4 (.667) to get to 41 wins. In that scenario, for the Pelicans to win the division, Buies Creek would need to finish at least 9-3 to catch the Birds. Carolina, which is only playing 69 games this half, would need to go 11-2 to get to 41 wins. However, the Mudcats, if they finish 41- 28, would have a half-game edge on the Pelicans if Myrtle Beach completes the half at 41-29. The Birds’ next five games come against either Buies Creek or Carolina. IT IS HOW YOU START In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three mes. During that span, Myrtle Beach’s rotaon gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasng roughly 4.0 frames per oung. However, since that point, the Birds’ starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 21 of their past 24 games, with the three excepons being a spot start from Casey Bloomquist and two more from Kyle Miller. The club’s starters have allowed just 50 runs, 42 earned, on 107 hits in 134.2 innings (2.81 ERA, 7.2 H/9) during this me frame, lasng 5.2 frames per oung. NO WALK IN THE PARK On May 22, the Pelicans walked seven Salem hiers, pushing their season total to 151, an average of 3.4 per game and the third-most in the league at the me. In the 13 games since, the Birds have issued just 30 free passes, an average just 2.3 per contest. That has pushed Myrtle Beach from the third-most total walks into a e for the second-fewest in the circuit. Opponents have strolled to first more than twice in a contest in just three of the 13 games during this stretch. BIRDS SOAR TO TOP IN DE FACTO TWIN BILL SWEEPMyrtle Beach won Sunday’s suspended game 8-5 before shutting out Buies Creek 1-0 in Monday’s scheduled contest to vault into sole possession of first place in the Southern Division. With the Pelicans leading 8-5, Sunday’s contest was suspended in the middle of the 10th inning due to rain. Once play was resumed on Monday, Dillon Maples fired a scoreless bottom of the 10th inning to seal the win and pull the Birds into a first-place tie with the Astros. In Monday’s regularly scheduled contest, Mike Rucker, who was making his first career start, tossed five innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander struck out six against one walk. Myrtle Beach’s only run of the game came in the fifth inning on a P.J. Higgins sacrifice fly. On the tail of Rucker, Kyle Miller pitched four scoreless innings for the save.

A TALE OF TWO CITIESBy winning the completion of Sunday’s suspended game 8-5 and then clipping Buies Creek 1-0 in Monday’s scheduled contest, the Pelicans have slingshot themselves into sole possession of first place in the Southern Division - the first time all year the Birds have found themselves alone in the division’s top perch. Prior to yesterday, Myrtle Beach hadn’t even shared a bit of first place since April 7, the season’s second day, when the Birds were 2-0. The Pelicans have won five in a row and eight of 11 heading into Tuesday’s contest.

BROKEN BATSThe Pelicans’ offense has really struggled this season, ranking either last or second-to-last in the league in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. The Birds also rank no better than fourth in any other offensive category besides home runs (T-2nd). However, Myrtle Beach places fourth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying offensive numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans’ ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive statistics is hitting with runners in scoring position. The Birds are batting just .244/.305/.372 (.677 OPS) overall. However, with runners in scoring position, that line magically rises to .275/.335/.398 (.733 OPS). The bad news for Myrtle Beach, or, maybe, the good news, is that nearly every single team across every single level of baseball posts similar overall numbers to their lines with runners in scoring position.

GAME OF THRONESOver their run of a league-high six consecutive postseason appearances, the Pelicans have won the Southern Division in six of the 12 halves.

IT IS HOW YOU STARTIn a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach’s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, the Birds’ starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 21 of their past 24 games, with the three exceptions being a spot start from Casey Bloomquist and two more from Kyle Miller. The club’s starters have allowed just 50 runs, 42 earned, on 107 hits in 134.2 innings (2.81 ERA, 7.2 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing.

NO WALK IN THE PARKOn May 22, the Pelicans walked seven Salem hitters, pushing their season total to 151, an average of 3.4 per game and the third-most in the league at the time. In the 13 games since, the Birds have issued just 30 free passes, an average just 2.3 per contest. That has pushed Myrtle Beach from the third-most total walks into a tie for the second-fewest in the circuit. Opponents have strolled to first more than twice in a contest in just three of the 13 games during this stretch.

ABOUT RYAN

-Born and raised in Whitby, Ontario, Kellogg was a member of Canada’s 2017 World Baseball Classic roster. The southpaw pitched in one inning in one game.

-Kellogg had an illustrious career at Arizona State University. He is one of eight Sun Devil players all-time to be named to the All-Pac-12 First Team three times, and is one of two players in school history to lead Arizona State in wins in three consecutive seasons.

-A mechanical engineering major in Tempe, Kellogg still ranks 10th in school history with 28 career wins while his 3.50 career ERA is the program’s 11th-lowest in the aluminum bat era. The left-hander started 47 of 48 career games, making him just the seventh pitcher in school history with at least 47 starts.

-Kellogg notched 11 wins over ranked opponents (four in 2015, three in 2013 and four in 2014), including two top-five road wins over Oregon State (and three total), two top-10 wins over Oregon (one road) and two ranked wins over UCLA (one road).

-Kellogg has always followed the Toronto Blue Jays. The Rogers Centre is only 45 minutes from his house, so he spent many summer afternoons there as a kid. He has always followed them because they were so close to his hometown and because they are now the only remaining Canadian team.

-He tries to model his game after Cliff Lee and Brian Wilson. He models his pitching after Lee because they throw the same pitches and he feels Lee is “very smart and composed” on the mound. He also likes Brian Wilson because of his ability to have fun around the game while still being a great competitor on the mound.

2017 SEASON-Outside of one bad start on May 7 against Buies Creek, Kellogg has ceded no more than three earned runs in any outing. In those other six starts, he has a 3.09 ERA.

-The left-hander has shown reverse platoon splits this season, with left-handed hitters posting a .943 OPS in 53 at-bats. Righties possess a .618 OPS in 101 at-bats.

2016 SEASON-Over his final six starts, Kellogg had three starts in which he did not allow a run, and three starts in which he only allowed one run. All told, his ERA in a starting role during that stretch was 0.84 (3 ER in 32.1 IP, 22 H, 5 BB, 29 K).

-Kellogg walked more than two batters in just three of his 24 outings, with 11 of those results with zero free passes.

-In the first half of 2016, Kellogg went 2-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 12 starts (67.1 IP, 64 H, 17 BB, 55 K). In the second half of the season, the lefty was 7-3 with a 1.99 ERA in 12 games (63.1 IP, 51 H, 9 BB, 52 K).

-Kellogg showed reverse platoon splits, with lefties posting a .728 OPS in 182 at-bats against him. Righties had a .587 OPS in 309 at-bats.

2015 SEASON-Despite starting in nine of his 10 outings, Kellogg didn’t make any starts longer than three innings.

ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES-During his final year at Arizona State, he went 9-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 2015, striking out 92 batters and walking 23 with two complete games in 115 innings across 16 starts.

-One of the highlights of Kellogg’s career came in his freshman year in 2013, when he tossed a no-hitter against then-No. 3 Oregon State. It was the ninth no-hitter in school history, and the first since Feb. 2, 1993. It was also the first no-hitter ever in Pac-10/12 play, according to Sun Devil athletics.

-Kellogg was originally selected in the 12th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Henry Street High School in Whitby.
