2011 TOLEDO SOFTBALL 2011 TOLEDO SOFTBALL 2011 TOLEDO SOFTBALL GAME NOTES TOLEDO, OH - After a brief six-game homestand the University of Toledo softball team - who began the season with 21-straight road games - will commence yet another long road stretch of ten games. The first set of away contests begins with a mid-week doubleheader at Youngstown State, followed by a pair of MAC matchups at Central and Eastern Michigan this weekend. The Rockets (5-22, 1-3 MAC) opened conference play at home this past weekend with a 1-3 mark against Buffalo and Kent State. After beginning the weekend with a 6-2 win over Buffalo in Game One of a doubleheader, the Rockets couldn’t complete a comeback bid in Game Two’s 4-5 loss. Against Kent State, the Rockets were unable to stall the potent Golden Flash offense and dropped a pair of high-scoring affairs. Despite the early conference setbacks, several Rockets have been picking up steam at the plate, led by the recent play of sophomore DP Erinn Wright. Over the course of a week, Wright improved her batting average by nearly .100 points, and has collected hits in eight of her last 10 games. Sophomore RF Lindsey Tobias also continues to be one of the Rockets’ most consistent hitters. She now leads Toledo in nearly every offensive category, including average (.346), home runs (5) and RBI (16). The rest of the Rocket offense has also improved with the start of MAC play, as Toledo hitters have totaled 10 or more hits in three of the four conference games played thus far. Youngstown State enters Thursday’s doubleheader - pushed back from Wednesday due to inclement weather - with a 15-13 record, but is currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak. As a team, the Penguins are hitting .304, led by junior RF Jordan Ingalls with a .432 clip and 28 RBI. In the circle YSU pitchers have a collective 4.36 ERA, topped by freshman Casey Crozier (9-7) with a 3.18 ERA. “We need to continue to move in the right direction and gain some momentum,” said Head Coach Tarrah Beyster. “As long as we play our game and take care of the little things, this series can allow us to do just that.” Central Michigan is currently tied with Toledo for fifth in the MAC West with a 1-3 record through the first four conference games. Overall, the Chippewas are 14-12 with a .261 team batting average and a team ERA of 2.32. Leading the efficient pitching staff is the pair of Kara Dornbos (5-4) and Kari Seddon (4-6), who boast ERAs of 1.25 and 2.30, respectively. Eastern Michigan, meanwhile, is tied for third in the West with a 2-2 MAC mark. The Eagles hold a 15-7 overall record, batting .315 and totaling a 2.70 staff ERA. McKenna Russ (.481) and Stacie Skodinski (.446) lead the Eagle hitters, while staff ace Jenna Ignowski (9-3) leads EMU pitchers with a 1.47 ERA. “This weekend is very important for us to gain some ground in the conference standings,” said Beyster. “We need to be consistent in our play and understand that every game, every inning and every play matters in the grand scheme of things. We need to take it one game at a time and one play at a time.” Thursday’s doubleheader with Youngstown State is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. On Friday the Rockets will play two at Central Michigan beginning at 1 p.m. Finally, Toledo will close out the weekend with games at Eastern Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. For complete coverage of the weekend, check back with utrockets.com. Tarrah Beyster (Oregon State, ‘00) enters her second season as the Head Coach of the University of Toledo S of tbal l team. Last season the Rockets finished with a 12-39
record overall, 4-18 in the MAC. Despite the tough season, the 2010 campaign saw Rocket records littered across the books. As a team, a new record was set in RBI in a season with 197, which broke the old mark of 192 (1990). The team’s 29 home runs were one shy of a school record (30, 2005), and the squad’s .372 slugging percentage is also the second-best mark in history (.390, 2005). Several individuals also made their way into the record books.
