THE KESSEL RUN
Phil Kessel is currently on a seven-game point streak (Jan. 9-21) with a goal and seven assists in that stretch. It marks the longest
individual point streak for the Maple Leafs since Pavel Kubina registered at least one point in eight-straight contests during the 2007-08
season from March 18 to April 3. Kubina had nine points (2 goals, 7 assists) in that span.
Mats Sundin was the last Leaf to post a nine-game point streak, registering 16 points (8 goals, 8 assists) from February 23 to March 11
during the 2007-08 season. In 2008-09, Kubina (Oct. 29-Nov. 8) and Mikhail Grabovski (Nov. 2-15) were tied for a Maple Leafs season
high with six-game point streaks.
THE PONY EXPRESS RIDES AGAIN IN ATLANTA
Alexei Ponikarovsky has scored four goals in a 60-second span against the Atlanta Thrashers this season. On December 7,
Ponikarovsky scored two goals in 28 seconds in the second period of Toronto's 5-2 home win over Atlanta. Ponikarovsky then tallied
twice in 32 seconds on January 19 in the Maple Leafs 4-3 road loss to the Thrashers. Ponikarovsky leads Toronto with five points (4
goals, 1 assist) in two games against Atlanta this season, and has registered more career goals (15) against the Thrashers than against
any other NHL club.
KESSEL LEADS NHL IN SHOTS SINCE NOVEMBER 3
Since returning from injury on November 3, 2009, Phil Kessel leads the NHL in shots with 181 in 40 games. Kessel missed the first 12
games of the season (Oct. 1-31) due to a shoulder injury. The following is a list of the NHL's shot-leaders since November 3, 2009:
Phil Kessel - 181 Zach Parise - 161 Jeff Carter - 151
MAPLE LEAFS LEAD NHL IN SHOTS
The Maple Leafs are currently first in the NHL with 1755 total shots and an average of 33.8 shots per game this season. Toronto has
registered at least 30 shots on goal in 37 of 52 games this season, including 11-straight contests (Nov. 10-Dec. 1). On November 23
against the New York Islanders, the Maple Leafs tied a franchise record with 61 shots on goal in a 4-3 overtime loss. Toronto previously
recorded 61 shots on February 25, 1976 in an 8-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
KABERLE LEADING THE WAY
Tomas Kaberle currently leads the Maple Leafs in assists (37) and points (42), is fourth among NHL defencemen in points and tied for
seventh overall in NHL assists. He is the only defenceman in the NHL to lead his team in scoring this season. No Leaf defenceman has
ever led the team in scoring at season's end.
Ian Turnbull holds the team record for most points in a season by a defenceman with 79 in the 1976-77 season. Borje Salming
posted 78 points that season (the second best offensive output by a Leafs defenceman in a season) while Darryl Sittler and Lanny
MacDonald tied for the team lead in 1976-77 with 90 points.
TOSKALA BLANKS FLYERS
Vesa Toskala turned aside 38 shots on January 14 versus Philadelphia to record his first shutout of the season in the Maple Leafs 4-0
win over the Flyers. It was Toskala's first shutout since October 17, 2008 when the Leafs dropped a 1-0 decision in a shootout to the
New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
KABERLE POSTING IMPRESSIVE STATS SINCE LABOUR STOPPAGE
Tomas Kaberle ranks second in assists and points among all NHL defencemen since the start of the 2005-06 season. Kaberle trails
only Nicklas Lidstrom in each category. The chart below is as of Saturday, January 23, 2010.
