Game Designer A game designer has many responsibilities with a game they are making. The Process: The “textbook” approach is to start with a concept and create a game design document which is intended to show the entire game design mapped out to give direction to the development team. Designers usually adapt to multiple roles. When discussing a new project they may be expected to create a pitch of ideas for the game. If the pitch is approved the designer may be expected to give a more detailed design document. As the production progresses more input is expected. Near the end of production the designer must make sure every part of the game is of a high standard. The following are what a game designer is responsible for: World design • a backstory • a setting • a theme for the game; often done by a lead designer System design • game rules • brainstorming and formulating the core ideas for the system • understanding the gameplay and story goals, and how the system can help embellish on them • scripting the basic interface and system logic • working with and communicate the design goals clearly with other disciplines and collaborate and incorporate other disciplines into the creation process • working in our proprietary design tools to place necessary objects, triggers, and scripted logic to fire off events in the gameplay flow • bug checking Content design • characters • items • puzzles • missions
