Whether it’s family encouragement or professional inspiration, ath-letesareinfluencedbytheirenvironments.
ForNortheast’ssophomoreforwardKeDorianSullivanandfreshmanforwardAngeliaAllenguidancehascomefrombothplaces.
SullivanandAllenbothcredittheirmothersfortheirbasketballprow-essandlooktotheNationalBasketballAssociation’s(NBA)OklahomaCityThundersmallforwardKevinDurantforinspiration.
However,Allen and Sullivan’s admiration of Durant is not limitedwhattheNBAstardoesonthecourt.Itiswhatthebasketballveterandoeswhenheisnotplayingthatimpressestheduo.
“Ilovehisworkethic,”Sullivansaid.“Heis inthegym24-hoursaday,7-daysaweekwhenheisnotplaying.”
“Therewasaquotefromhiscoachonhowhecomestopracticeeachdayandplayslikeheisawalk-on,”Allensaid.
While Durant comes in at sixfeet, nine inches (6-9), Sullivanregistersarespectablesixfeet,sev-eninches(6-7)andAllenmeasuresfivefeet,nineinches(5-9)andbothplaythesmallforwardpositionfortheTigersandLadyTigers,respec-tively.
Nonetheless,whileDurantmayinfluence Allen and Sullivan’sgamesonthecourtitwasthefoun-dations that each of their mothershelp build as Sullivan and Allenwere growing up that helped eachreachtheirpotential toplayonthecollegiatelevel.
“My mother introduced me tothe sport,”Allen said. “I grew upplaying (basketball) and just loveit.”
Sullivan’smotherisalittletougheronhersix-feet,seven-inchson.“Mymom…sheislikemycoach,”Sullivansaid.“ShetellsmewhatI
needtoworkonasfarasgoingtothenextlevel.”SullivanhasalreadyhadsuccessontheDivisionIlevel–transferring
fromAlcornStateUniversityduringtheoffseason.Sullivanappearedin32gamesfortheAlcornStateUniversityBraves
duringthe2011-12seasonclocking20.1minutesagameandscoring175points.
DuringhistimewithAlcornState,Sullivanalsopulleddown136totalreboundsandhad20blocksontheseason.
UnderLutherRiley, Sullivan shot .486 from thefloor and knocked
downover60-percentofhisfreethrowattempts.Sullivantalliedoverdoubledigitsseventimesinhis32gameswiththe
Bravesincludingadouble-doubleagainsttheUniversityofNewOrleanswheretheSouthwind(Tenn.)producthad10pointstogoalongwith11rebounds.
AsSullivanwasprovidinganoffensivepunchforAlcornState,AllenwasbusymakinghermarkontheBelmontHighSchoolrecordbooks.
Duringherfour-yearvarsitycareer,Allenscored1,687pointsinjust136games–averaging12.4pointspergame.
InherlastthreeyearsasaLadyCardinal,AllenhelpedleadBelmonttoapairofMississippiHighSchoolActivitiesAssociation(MHSAA)Class3AStateChampionships.
AllenandtheLadyCardinalscapturedtheClass3AStateChampion-shiphersophomoreseasonandthenturnedthetricktwoyearslaterduringherseniorcampaign.
However, Allen and Sullivan both know that there is a topic thatcomesbeforeathletics–academicsandwith their selected careers theBelmont native and theMemphis,Tenn., native have to dedicate alltheir time away from Bonner Ar-noldColiseumtobooks.
Allen has expressed interestin becoming an x-Ray technicianwhile Sullivan, who is currentlyundecidedonwhathewants todohassaidacareerinsportsmedicinecouldbehiscalling.
“It’sacademicsfirstandbasket-ballsecond,”Sullivansaid.“That’showIwasraised.”
Both Allen and Sullivan havesaid they would like to continuetheir playing careers on the four-yearlevelbutknowthattheirselectedprofessionsaretopsforeach.
Allensaidshe’d like tofinishherbasketballcareeron thefour-yearlevelthenstepintoajobwhileSullivanhasaspirationsofmakingitbacktotheDivisionIlevelandwantstoplayaslongashecan.
Whetherthatmeansmakingittotheprofessionalleagues–NBA,D-NBAorevenoverseas,theMemphisnativewillbehappywiththeresult.
However,bothknowthatwithafirmfoundationineducationandhav-ingtheirselectedcareerstofallbackonwhentheplayingdaysareover,theduowillbeassuccessfuloffthecourtastheyhavebeenonit.
