2018-19 Schedule Preps Marquette For Postseason Marquette is prepped for the postseason and received a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tour-nament courtesy of its season-long body of work, both in non-conference and leagueplay. The Golden Eagles played a total of 12 games against seven programs (five single-digitseeds) selected to the NCAA field, including a trio of BIG EAST opponents (Villanova, St.John’s and Seton Hall). Four of those games came in non-conference play, resulting inwins over Louisville, Buffalo, Wisconsin and Kansas State. MU collected 10 “quad 1” winsand posted an 8-6 road/neutral record. Nine of the 10 teams in the BIG EAST Conference have been selected for postseasonplay in the NCAA tournament or National Invitation Tournament.
Trio Earns All-League, Howard POY Markus Howard, Sam Hauser and Joey Hauser were each named to All-BIG EASTConference teams, highlighted by Howard’s unanimous selection by the league’s headcoaches as BIG EAST Player of the Year. Howard was also a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team honoree and Sam Hauserearned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team roster. Joey Hauser distinguished him-self as one of the league’s top newcomers (conference-best five-time freshman of theweek honoree), earning BIG EAST All-Freshman Team accolades. Howard was tabbed Second Team All-BIG EAST in 2017-18 as a sophomore and wasnamed to the all-freshman team in 2016-17. The Chandler, Arizona, native is the firstMarquette player to earn the BIG EAST’s top individual award since Jae Crowder in 2011-12. This year’s postseason honors were the first for both Sam and Joey Hauser. The Golden Eagles have had at least one player honored each year since the programbegan league affiliation with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1989-90.
Howard Moves Up BIG EAST, MU Scoring Lists Junior guard Markus Howard is currently in possession of 1,929 points, the second-best mark in Marquette’s storied history. Howard now trails just all-time leading scorer Jerel McNeal (1,985 - 2005-09). Howard became just the fifth player in BIG EAST history to collect 1,000 career pointsin league play in three seasons with his 25-point effort at Villanova. He joined Pat Garrity(Notre Dame), Dominique Jones (USF), Richard Hamilton (UConn) and Ray Allen (UConn)in the exclusive group and is now 28th all-time (1,070 points). Howard set a new Marquette single-season scoring mark on March 3 againstCreighton, passing former teammate Andrew Rowsey’s total of 716 points set in 2017-18. He is already in possession of 825 points with at least one more game on the sched-ule. Howard and his brother, Jordan (Central Arkansas, 2015-18), are now the third-high-est scoring sibling duo (4,456 points-and-counting) in collegiate history. Steph and SethCurry (4,736 points) and Tyler and Ben Hansbrough (4,485) own the top-two spots.

Howard Candidate For Multiple National Awards All-America candidate and BIG EAST Player of the Year Markus Howard’s name is inthe mix for a variety of national awards. Named the league’s top player on March 13, he has also been selected one of fivefinalists for the Bob Cousy Award, which is presented to the nation’s top point guard. Howard is one of 20 players in contention for the John R. Wooden Award and John R.Wooden All American Team, bestowed upon the nation’s best player at a NCAA DivisionI institution. The Chandler, Arizona native is also one of 12 players selected by the U.S.Basketball Writers Association for its 2018-19 Oscar Robertson Trophy Final MidseasonWatch List. Howard is also in the mix for the Lute Olson Award and the Citizen Naismith TrophyAward (one of 10 semifinalists).
Focus On Defense Pays Off In 2018-19 The Golden Eagles spent a majority of the offsea-son focusing on the team’s efforts at the defensiveend of the court and that work has paid dividends in2018-19. Through games of March 17, MU ranks first in theBIG EAST in field goal percentage defense (.402, 23rdin nation), second in defensive rebounds per game(28.5, 17th in nation) and first in blocked shots (4.2bpg.). Howard Sets BIG EAST Single-Game Scoring Mark Thanks to his record-setting 53-point effort at Creighton on Jan. 9, junior guardMarkus Howard was able to break his own BIG EAST conference single-game record. Howard Member Of NCAA Oversight Committee Junior guard Markus Howard was named to the NCAA Division I Men’s BasketballOversight Committee as a non-voting member during the 2017-18 campaign and willserve his term through June of 2020. The committee is comprised of coaches and administrators from across the country,including BIG EAST Conference Commissioner Val Ackerman and Saint Joseph’s headcoach Phil Martelli. The only other student-athlete in the group is Ethan Good of BowlingGreen. Wojciechowski, who has enjoyed a wealthof success in collegiate basketball as botha player and a coach. Wojciechowski (pronounced woe-ju-HOW-skee) was introduced as the pro-gram’s 17th head coach on April 1, 2014by Marquette University President Dr.Michael R. Lovell. From the moment he arrived on cam-pus, Wojciechowski established his “WinEvery Day” philosophy as the foundationfor the Marquette program. Thatapproach has been extremely successfulon the recruiting trail, where the MU staffassembled back-to-back nationally rankedrecruiting classes in 2015 and 2016. The Golden Eagles competed in thepostseason for the second-straight year in2017-18, advancing to the quarterfinals ofthe National Invitation Tournament (NIT).MU finished with a 21-win season and theroster featured all-conference performersMarkus Howard and Andrew Rowsey.Marquette’s offensive attack was one ofthe top performers in the country andamong the numerous records to fall wasthe program’s all-time 3-point field goalsmade mark. Marquette returned to the NCAA tour-nament in 2016-17, thanks in large part toone of the most productive offensiveattacks in the country. McDonald’s All-America honoree in over30 years and a top-10 rated prospect. The Golden Eagles claimed their firstwin under Wojciechowski in the seasonopener in 2014-15. The 79-63 win over UTMartin at the BMO Harris Bradley Centerwas his first as a head coach at the NCAADivision I level. The season also producedwins over Georgia Tech, Tennessee andArizona State. Wojciechowski, 42, had previouslyserved as an assistant coach at Duke sincethe 1999-2000 season and was promotedto associate head coach in the summer of2008. As a player and coach, he was a partof Duke's winning tradition, serving on thecoaching staff for two NCAA tournamentchampions. During his tenure, the BlueDevils posted an incredible 441-92 recordand competed in the NCAA tournamentevery year. Wojciechowski also served as courtcoach and scout for the USA BasketballMen's National Team. He helped lead on-court duties as well as game preparationfrom 2006-12, including the program'sgold-medal performance at the 2008Beijing Olympics and 2012 LondonOlympics. The Olympic teams includedNBA greats such as Marquette alumnusDwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant and LeBronJames.
Earning national titlesIn 2001, in his second year as an assistantat Duke, Wojciechowski and the BlueDevils won the national championship.The team also captured the Atlantic CoastConference regular season and tourna-ment crowns and posted a 35-4 record. Wojciechowski saw one of his formerteammates and pupils, Shane Battier,earn the consensus National Player of theYear award in 2001 as well as NationalDefensive Player of the Year for the thirdconsecutive season. Wojciechowski achieved repeated suc-cess at the highest level with an NCAA titlein the 2009-10 season as associate headcoach. On the road to the championship,the Blue Devils also won the ACC
Tournament, the ACC Regular Season andNIT Season Tip-Off titles. Defense andrebounding were key for the Blue Devilswho had one of the nation's top defenses,holding opponents to 61.0 points pergame, and ranked 14th out of 334 teamsin rebounding margin. As a player, Wojciechowski (who wasoften referred to as "Wojo,") was namedthe top defensive player in the country hissenior year, a two-time All-ACC choice andhonorable mention Associated Press All-America. He appeared in 128 careergames for the Blue Devils and earned 88starting assignments. Wojciechowski is a native of SevernaPark, Md., and a first-generation collegestudent, having earned a bachelor'sdegree in sociology from Duke in 1998.
