What You Need To Know About Furman... Furman was tabbed to fi nish third in preseason polling of the SoCon’s coaches and media. The Paladins are 65-24 under the direction of third-year head coach Bob Richey. Furman has posted a 47-16 record in Southern Conference regular season play since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. The Paladins boast an 88-35 overall record since the beginning of the 2016-17 season and have reached the postseason in three of the past four years. Last season, Furman (25-8) downed 2018 Final Four participants Loyola Chicago and defending national champion Villanova en route to a school-record 25 wins and its fi rst NIT berth since 1991. The 2018-19 Paladins, who opened the season with 12 straight wins, made their fi rst appearance in the Associated Press Top 25 and climbed as high as No. 23. Furman spent three weeks in the AP poll and appeared at No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll on December 17. Furman claimed a share of the 2017-18 SoCon regular season title, its fi rst since 1990-91. Furman, which reached the NCAA Tournament fi ve times during the 1970’s, is in search of its fi rst trip to the Big Dance since 1980. Senior Jordan Lyons buried 10-of-12 three-point attempts and connected on all eight of his trips to the foul line to pour in 40 points in Furman’s New Year’s Day victory at VMI. Lyons’ 40-point performance was another in a string of memorable performances in his Furman career... Lyons, who also scored 54 points in a victory over North Greenville last sea-son, became the fi rst Paladin since Darrell Floyd (1954-56) to score 40 or more points twice during his Furman career. Lyons’ 40 points matched Stephen Croone’s 40 versus Liberty on December 20, 2013, as the most by a Paladin versus Division I competition since Roy Simpson netted 45 points in a victory over East Carolina on February 5, 1972. His 10 three-point baskets at VMI were the most for a Paladin versus a Divi-sion I opponent and second most in school history behind his NCAA record-tying 15 triples versus North Greenville last season. Lyons was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week on January 7, after averaging 27.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in victories over VMI and ETSU. The Peachtree City, Ga., native scored 40 points in an 89-73 win at VMI before netting a game-high 14 points to go with six rebounds in the Paladins’ win over ETSU. For the week, Lyons connected on 14-of-20 three-point tries and all 10 of his free throw attempts. Lyons connected on a school-record 105 three-point baskets during the 2018-19 season and his 269 career triples trail only Eric Webb’s 273 on Furman’s career chart.MOST 3-POINTERS MADE - SEASON

“I am excited to have Bob Richey as the face of the Furman program moving forward,” said Furman Athletics Director Mike Buddie, at the time of Richey’s hiring. “The trajectory of our program is due in large part to Bob’s efforts and I know that trajectory will continue in the right direc-tion. After a record-setting season, to be able to maintain continuity is fantastic. Bob is well qualifi ed and will continue to run a program that will make the Furman family extremely proud.”
A native of Florence, S.C., Richey, who served six seasons as a member of the Paladin coaching staff before moving into the head coaching role, helped Furman to a school record-tying 23 total victories and 14 Southern Conference wins in 2017, while the program earned a share of its fi rst Southern Conference regular season championship in 21 years and a trip the CollegeInsider.com (CIT) Postseason Tournament semifi nals. The 2016-17 Paladins, who also won a school record 12 road games, notched back-to-back postseason appearances for the fi rst time since 1974-75, and captured postseason victories in consecutive seasons for the fi rst time in school history.
“I am truly humbled to be given the opportunity to lead the Furman basketball program moving forward,” said Richey, at the time of his hiring. “To have the chance to continue to work at this great university and sustain the relationships I have established is quite an honor. I look forward to continuing the success that we have built on the court, while we recruit and align with the overall mission of Furman University. With our basket-ball program, outstanding liberal arts degree, beautiful campus, and city, Furman will continue to attract the best student-athletes and prepare them for success in all areas of their lives. We look forward to the days ahead!”
Richey, who has served as position coach for the Paladins’ guards since joining the Furman staff prior to the 2011-12 campaign, has recruited and developed back-to-back Southern Conference Players of the Year. Guard Stephen Croone, who fi nished his Furman career with 1,936 points, earned consensus SoCon Player of the Year honors in 2016 before joining the NBDL’s Sioux Falls SkyForce for the 2016-17 season. Junior Devin Sibley followed Croone by earning 2017 SoCon Player of the Year honors, fi rst team All-SoCon accolades, and fi rst team NABC All-District lau-rels. Sibley was joined on both the All-SoCon squad and NABC All-District Team by fellow Richey recruit Kris Acox, who capped his career with 1,051 points and ranked among the SoCon’s top rebounders over the past two seasons.
In 2016, Richey played a key role in Furman’s return to the postseason as the Paladins fashioned a 19-16 overall record, fi nished third in the SoCon with an 11-7 mark, and advanced to the second round of the CIT with a buzzer-beating victory over Louisiana Monroe at Timmons Arena in fi rst round action. Furman won a school record 14 home games, including 11 in a row, while Croone earned player of the year and fi rst team All-SoCon accolades.
The previous season, Richey helped lead the Paladins to their fi rst Southern Conference Tournament fi nals appearance in 13 years as the Paladins downed No. 2 seed Chattanooga and No. 3 seed Mercer to advance to the league championship game.
Richey’s recruits have garnered all-conference honors in nine consecutive seasons, including Furman recruits Stephen Croone (2014, ‘15, ‘16 All-SoCon), Kris Acox (2017 All-SoCon), and Devin Sibley (2017 All-SoCon). He has also helped recruit six players over the last fi ve seasons who have garnered SoCon All-Freshman honors, including Sibley, who won 2015 SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades.
An associate head coach for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers during the 2010-11 campaign, Richey helped CSU achieve its highest win total in 14 years in 2011. In fi ve seasons as an assistant at CSU, he recruited fi ve players who went on to garner All-Big South Conference honors, high-

Richey helped the Bucs improve their conference record in each season, culmi-nating with a squad that ranked in the top 50 nationally by averaging 74 points per game in his fi nal season.
During his fi ve years at Charleston Southern, Richey recruited fi ve of the top 11 scorers in CSU history in Warren (1,968 points, 2nd all-time), Nimley (1,866 points, 3rd all-time), Harper (1,633 points, 5th all-time), Kelvin Martin (1,483 points, 8th all-time) and Jeremy Sexton (1,253 points, 11th all-time). Two of his recruits earned Big South Freshman of the Year honors in their rookie seasons, and he placed at least one player on the Big South All-Freshman squad in four consecutive seasons. Basketball analyst Jeff Goodman rated Richey as the No. 4 assistant coach in the Big South Conference in 2010, while Richey also ranked as the youngest coach on the list.
A graduate of Florence Christian School, Richey led his team to a 28-2 record and state championship his senior year. He was named the 3A State player of the year and currently holds seven school records at Flor-ence Christian.
Richey graduated summa cum laude from North Greenville University in May of 2006 with a degree in business management. In April of 2007, he married the former Jessica Tingle and the couple have two chil-dren, Audrey Gabrielle and Robert McIntire “Mac”.

The Paladins’ Clay Mounce is the youngest member of an athletic family. His father played basketball at Montreat-Anderson College and his mother was a volleyball standout at Appalachian State. Oldest brother Chase played college basketball at Tusculum University, while brother Carson currently plays for UNC Pembroke. Prep standouts Joe Anderson and Garrett Hien signed on November 13, to join the Furman basketball program in 2020-21. Anderson, a point guard out of Maryville High School in Maryville, Tenn., garnered 2018 and 2019 Tennessee Sports Writers Association AAA All-State honors. The Knox News All-PrepXtra fi rst team selection averaged 20.6 points, 4.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game last season. Hien, a 6-foot-9 wing, was a NCISAA AAA All-State pick and All-Metrolina Conference choice last season for Concord First Assembly Academy in Concord, N.C. The versatile Hien averaged 15.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game as a junior. Highlighting Furman’s list of four returning starters this season is 2019 All-Southern Conference selection, 2020 preseason all-league choice and Lou Hen-son Award (mid-major POTY) Watch List member Jordan Lyons. The native of Peachtree City, Ga., who was tabbed by Andy Katz as one of the top 25 seniors in college basketball entering this season, averaged 16.2 points per game last year while connecting on a school-record 105 three-point attempts in 33 games. The guard poured in 54 points, the most by an NCAA Division I player since 2009, and matched a Division I record by draining 15 three-pointers as part of a school-record 21 treys by the Paladins in a 107-67 win over North Greenville on November 15, 2018. His 54 points ranked as the eighth highest single-game to-tal in Furman history and most since Darrell Floyd scored 62 versus The Citadel in 1956. In Furman’s NIT clash versus Wichita State, Lyons netted 19 points to become the 45th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points. Furman’s victory over Mercer in the opening round of the 2019 Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship extended the Paladins single sea-son school record for wins to 25. ORIGIN OF THE PALADINFurman University athletic teams were known by different names until the 1961 school year. The baseball team was “Hornets,” the football team “Hurricane,” and the basketball team “Paladins.”
The basketball team was dubbed “Paladins” by a Greenville sportswriter in the 1930s. By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams be-came the “Paladins” on September 15, 1961. A Paladin is a knight on a horse and the recognized mascot of Furman University’s athletic teams.
have won 15 straight non-conference regular season contests at Timmons Arena and boast a 26-5 overall record in their last 31 regular season non-conference games. Despite returning four starters this season, Furman faces a major task in replacing fi rst team All-SoCon forward Matt Rafferty. The Hinsdale, Ill., native put together one of the most outstanding seasons in school history last year averaging 17.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game. He became one of just a handful of players in the history of Division I college basketball to average 17 points, nine boards, four assists and two steals per game and was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 50 players in college basketball last season. Raferty fi nished his career ranked 23rd in school history in scoring (1,340 points), eighth in rebounding (857), sixth in blocked shots (98), fourth in fi eld goal percentage (57.6%), 12th in assists (311) and fourth in steals (186). His fi eld goal percentage of 61.5% last season ranked second best in school history and he established a news school record with 84 steals as a senior. Rafferty and fellow senior Andrew Brown fashioned a new school record by winning 90 games over their four years. Furman made its return to downtown Greenville with an 80-73 victory over Winthrop during its fi rst of three Weekends at the Well presented by Ingles and Healthy Blue Saturday evening at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Jordan Lyons netted 21 of his game-high 26 points in the fi rst half as the Paladins built a 46-33 halftime lead en route to a victory over the Eagles. Junior Clay Mounce posted 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Noah Gurley totaled 15 points and nine boards. The Paladins called downtown Greenville home from the program’s inception in 1908 until the closing of Greenville Memorial Auditorium following the 1995-96 season. Furman captured six SoCon Tournament titles, four regular season titles and made six NCAA Tournament appearances while playing its home games downtown. The last time Furman basketball took the court for a regular season game downtown prior to this season came during the 2006-07 season when it dropped SoCon matchups versus Davidson and College of Charleston at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The Well also hosted the SoCon Tournament in 2000 and 2001 with the Paladins advancing to face Apppala-chian State in the semifi nals in 2000. Furman hosted the fi rst and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA Tournament at the Well and will do so again in 2022.
