GALSTON HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER WINS MASTERCHEF Well done to Elena
Duggan,
the Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts at Galston High
School, for her wonderful achievement in winning Masterchef
2016
So many people in our community watched the show each week,
following Elena’s progress. Facebook was alive with comments of
encouragement. The nail-biting and highly emotional finale was an
amazing demonstration of human selflessness and portrayed a
true spirit of generosity. Those who watched, particularly her
students, witnessed something quite amazing when Elena stopped and
took the time to help her opponent when he struggled to complete
some of the tasks in the final moments of the competition. What an
inspiration to us all.
“The school is absolutely thrilled for her. Students and staff
have been enjoying watching and following her successes. Obviously,
we are disappointed that she will be putting her teaching career on
hold, but this is a fantastic opportunity for her and very well
deserved.” commented Lisa Pieper, Deputy Principal at Galston High
School.
Elena’s prize pool was $250,000 plus a monthly food column with
Delicious Magazine.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR’S DESKAugust already! I don’t know about
you, but this winter has been cold
for me. The rain has been lovely though. Soon, it will be spring
and time for all of us to come out of hibernation. It will be time
to get out into the garden if you have one and you can. The birds
will be singing and the bees buzzing. One of my favourite times of
the year.
It will also be time to think about Christmas before we know it.
Scary thought isn’t it? I love Christmas though. Love spending time
with loved ones and maybe getting away for a little summer
holiday.
This issue of the Hills to Hawkesbury Living magazine sees our
regular sections full of informative and interesting articles and
events.

IVOR JONES AND FRIENDS MEMORIES
DAYS IN THE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND
Back in the 1970s Cat Stevens recorded a song called “Remember
The Days In The Old School Yard”. Do you remember that song? Well I
do and I also remember some of the games that were played in the
school playground some 60 plus years ago.
As a young child of around eight or nine years old I can recall
playing games such as tag, hop-scotch, jacks and marbles. As I
lived in the UK at the time I can also recall the game of Conkers.
Naturally many girls played games such as elastics and skipping to
rhymes. Then there were games such as tunnel ball, playing on the
monkey bars, putting a ball into a stocking and bouncing that
against a wall. There were also girls bouncing two or more balls
against a wall and catching and throwing them again. Such games
provided exercise and improved dexterity or co-ordination.
Can any readers remember the rhymes they said when skipping,
playing elastics or bouncing balls
against the wall?
Marbles was a great game and some boys (and perhaps girls also)
used ball bearings on occasion to smash their opponents
marbles.
The various games that came into and out of fashion from time to
time depending on the season included Yo-yos. Remember “Walking The
Dog” or “Rocking The Cradle” and all the other movements you could
do with the Yo-Yo?
Hula hoops were also a craze that came into fashion and went out
again just as quickly, swaying your hips to keep the hula hoop up
spinning around your waist or spinning it around your arm. There
were also the boys who threw the hoop with a flick of the wrist to
make it spin and as it hit the ground to return to you.
Other activities that took place in the playground were the
swapping of cards. Remember the cards you would collect from
packets of bubble gum? Or if you are older you may remember the
cigarette cards. Cards came from a number of other outlets or
products as a way of improving
sales or marketing. You may have even swapped lunches with
fellow students. On the subject of food, what about the small
bottles of milk that were delivered to the schools so that students
would receive a supply of calcium to strengthen their bones and
teeth. The milk would be delivered in the morning and often sat in
the warm or hot sun so when you got to have your bottle the milk
would be warm and not cold.
They sure were fun filled days.
Of course not everyone had fun at school. Discipline was much
stricter back then. Many a boy would receive six strokes of the
cane. Sometimes this may have been for some very minor matter. I
don’t know how many people have told me “that never ever hurt me”.
I must say that is also the case in my experience, but I do
recognise that some teachers were sadistic and vengeful who took
great pleasure in inflicting punishment.
So if you don’t remember Cat Stevens hit song from the 1970s
“Remember the days in the old school yard”, perhaps your memories
maybe along the lines of
“School days, school days,
Dear Old Golden Rule Days
Reading and writing and ‘Rithmatic’
Taught to the tune of the Hickory Stick.”
So what do you remember of the days at school? Write your story
and send it in.

Ray Cunningham - Part Three of Three LIVING LEGENDS
PART THREE OF RAY’S STORYThis is the final installment
of this three part series on Ray Cunningham.
1961 and after a trip back to Australia, the Cunningham family
returned to the Iban people and to the small town of Pakan in the
north west Sarawak region of Borneo. Pakan, although small (it
consisted of 12 Chinese shops), was a strategic centre for many
Iban villages and was about two days journey by boat from the next
major town Sibu. By now Evelyn and Ray had two children; Kathy, who
was less than a year old and Gwen aged two. The mission’s funds
were running low, and while the family managed to obtain a small
block of land they could not afford to build a house. With some
local timber and a friend’s help the family managed to erect a
basic dwelling. Soon the small family needed to extend the
building. One day a Chinese carpenter called Lee Tung Ming came and
offered to work for Ray. Without any funds, Ray declined the offer,
but Tung insisted on helping for free. Tung was a Christian who had
been praying that God would send a “light” for the Iban people. He
now saw a group of Iban worshipping God every Sunday in Pakan.
“Uncle Tung Ming” was soon building and living with the family and
the young girls came to love him as an uncle. The unusual thing was
that Tung only spoke Chinese and Iban which made communication
interesting. Tung Ming went on to build a medical centre at
Lawas.
In 1962 the confrontation with communism began to manifest
itself in the areas in and around the Cunningham family.
Between 1962 and 1966 Indonesia and Malaysia fought a small,
undeclared war which came to involve troops from Australia, New
Zealand and Britain. The conflict resulted from a belief by
Indonesia’s President Sukarno that the creation of the Federation
of Malaysia was an attempt by Britain to maintain colonial rule
behind the cloak of independence. Most of the infiltrations
occurred in the border area between Indonesia and East Malaysia on
the island of Borneo, right in the area where the young Cunningham
family were. Indonesia’s campaign sought to
exploit the ethnic and religious diversity in Sabah and Sarawak
compared to that of Malaya and Singapore, with the intent of
unraveling the proposed state of Malaysia.
During this time, Ray came to know an English Engineer, Mr
Panton, who was managing road construction in the area. During the
Confrontation, it soon became evident and Mr Panton disclosed to
Ray that he was working for British Intelligence. He provided Ray
with guidance on what to look out for and asked Ray to supply
information to him quickly on any agitation by the communists. Mr
Panton also suggested that the Cunningham family prepare to leave.
Ray declined at the time, committed to the Iban people.
Ray received first hand reports of infiltrations and skirmishes
such as one of a village of 600 people being forced out of their
homes, robbed of their food and held hostage by a group of more
than 200 North Kalimantan National Army (TNKU) soldiers. The TNKU
eventually headed off upstream with their loot from the village.
Two local Gurkha scouts had managed to escape during the siege and
raised the alarm. The British were subsequently able to ambush the
TNKU further upstream. Only two of the TNKU were able to escape and
many body parts were seen flowing down the river from the
battle.
In 1963 the handover of the Sarawak region from the British to
the Malaysian government was imminent. The local people were very
uneasy. There were frequent incursions from Indonesia and the
danger of a communist rebellion. Many of the Iban people started to
wear their old war swords instead of the usual bush knife. The
tense situation was obvious to all. One night some local Chinese
men invited the Cunningham family to join them inside a barbed wire
barricade to protect them. Ray thought that was the wrong way to
approach the situation and would just make them a target. The next
day the special police organised a meeting between the Chinese
leaders and Iban chiefs. They asked Ray to speak. When Ray heard
that the leaders of both sides were in favour of sacrificing a pig
and sharing the blood with vows to keep the peace, he rejected that
idea also. Ray talked to them about freedom, which he likened to a
fire. There had been a dangerous brush fire only the day before.
“We have a responsibility to keep fire in the hearth where it is
safe and good.” While there had been some extravagant talk about
freedom from colonial rule, there were enough sober minded people
listening to appreciate the dangers of reckless independence. It
was significant that the Cunningham were
remaining in their place and trusting God. The people agreed to
keep the peace and exercise restraint.
When the day came to end British rule and begin Malaysian rule,
30 August 1963, the changeover was calm.
With the end of British rule, the previous religious divisions
were dissolved and all foreigners on visas were asked to leave the
country. Evelyn and Ray were committed to their cause and had
permanent residency from the beginning. This left the Cunninghams
as the only foreign Christian missionaries in the area. They
continued to faithfully minister to the people.
In 1973 the family moved to Miri a large town to work on a
translation of the bible into the Kenyah language and a particular
dialect. A battalion of the Malaysian military was stationed in
Miri, mainly made up of Kayan, Kelabit and Kenyah tribesmen. The
girls, Kathy and Gwen, continued their schooling via correspondence
and the Cunninghams joined a Malay speaking congregation that met
at the barracks. Soon enough the new church needed a place to meet
and the Shell Oil Company donated the church land on Canada Hill
overlooking Miri. By 1974 a church was built and Ray was the first
pastor. In 1978 Ray and Evelyn moved to Sibu and continued their
work, again working with the Iban, equipping them to become
self-sufficient with the gospel.
In 1991, Ray and Evelyn retired to Australia.
The Christian faith continued to grow throughout Sarawak. Muslim
missionaries also sought to win over the local people. They came to
the Iban promising gifts, money and a mosque. In one instance, in
Roban, the local people came to their chief and said, “these people
promised many things, but they have only given us one of their
promises, the
Mosque”. The chief allowed the people to raze the mosque.
In 2015, Ray Cunnigham at age 92, returned to the island where
he had fought for Australia, where he and Evelyn had raised a
family, served the people and spent most of their lives. Today
there are thousands of Christians in Sarawak. The Iban people gave
Ray a seat of honour at their “Big Gathering”, a congregation of
over 4,000 Iban. Each of the visiting speakers were interpreted
from English into Iban, except Ray, who was able to deliver his
address to the people in their native tongue. Ray was also able to
hand over to the people, master copies of literature he had
translated into their language during that time. The gathering
included performances, dances and singing.
What struck Ray was the extraordinary unity, bonding and peace
across the Iban groups. Groups that used to be at war with each
other and were bound by spiritual fear even so far as to not cross
rivers and borders. Ray observed a strength of maturity about their
faith and their unity above their denominations and that they have
been careful to avoid being politicised.
What a contrast, what a hope to the fear, violence and division
we see in the world around us today.
If you would like to attend Ray’s next public speaking session,
please contact [email protected].

IS CELEBRATING 30 YEARS!
MYSTICAL MYANMAR“This is Burma, it is quite unlike
any place you know about” I am quoting the words of Rudyard
Kipling- penned over 100 years ago. If you are looking for
somewhere to go that is a little different from the normal tourist
trail - now is the time to visit Mystical Myanmar (formerly Burma)
while this astonishing country still retains it’s time warp charm
and it’s people confident and full of optimism for the future, as a
nation emerging from the harsh conditions imposed by the previous
ruling military, but now on the cusp of great change. Visitors to
Myanmar will discover a nation raw and real and delightfully
offbeat. From riding in a horse-drawn cart past ancient temples to
witnessing the one legged fishermen of Inle Lake and the lakes
stilted houses. One of the best ways to experience Myanmar is by
cruising the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s largest and most important
river, opening up to explore it’s ancient temples, historical
monuments, fascinating villages and most scenic of waterways.
Cruising ranges from 8 days to full touring options of 16 days
taking the traveller from Yangon to Mandalay or round trips Yangon
(formerly Rangoon) to Yangon. Yangon is home to thriving bars and
restaurants set amongst the architectural remnants of British
colonial times, and probably the most developed city in the county.
You will follow a path less travelled
into Mandalay, Burma’s last royal capital and see the “World’s
Largest Book” amongst other attractions . Take to the skies in
Bagan, following the Irrawaddy to the central plains, Bagan is
synonymous with hot-air balloons, as this is one of the best ways
to appreciate the World Heritage – listed site of more than 2,000
religious monuments spread across the dusty plains- and just so
spectacular at sunset ! Most males in Myanmar will spend some time
in a monastery, so you will witness many orange clad Monks during
your journey. Australian tour companies are now venturing into
Myanmar and some such as Scenic and Insider Journeys support many
organisations within the country and will give their guests an
opportunity to interact with the people on a very personal basis by
sharing a meal and seeing the very real way that this emerging
tourism industry is helping local life escape the poverty of the
past. If you are looking for something “off the beaten tourist
track” now is the time to visit this magical, mystical destination
and be spellbound by this country’s hidden treasures. Singapore
Airlines and Thai Airways operate daily flights to Yangon via
Singapore and Bangkok respectively.

HILLS DISTRICT 2016 VARIETYBash, commencing on Sept 30th in
Warwick
and concluding on the 9th October at The Bathurst 1000 V8
Supercar race.
What is the ‘Variety Bash’? The Variety Bash started in 1985
when adventurer Dick Smith took a group of intrepid motorists from
Bourke to Burketown in their old cars, raising money for charity
along the way. All the money went to Variety, The Children’s
Charity to further its support of children who are sick,
disadvantaged or who have special needs.
The Bash has been staged by Variety annually in every state of
Australia since 1985 and still encapsulates the spirit of this
original idea. Each team fundraises throughout the year, all
vehicles must be 30 years or older and must be non-performance
modified. The Bash is not a race or a rally, but a channel for
everyone wishing to make a real difference to Australian families
doing it tough – all the while seeing and experiencing the splendor
of the Australian Outback.
Funds raised are donated to children who are sick, disadvantaged
or who have special needs by the way of goods and services. In this
way Variety is able to fill a vital gap between what families,
schools and communities are able to afford and what our children
need to lead engaged and fulfilling lives. An Appeals Committee
assesses each individual request for assistance throughout the
year. During the event we, as participants, are fortunate to
witness numerous heart swelling and tear jerking
moments as evidence of the amazing positive life changing impact
Variety has on Aussie kids and their families. It is definitely the
type of event and the type of charity that has our team keep coming
back to support year after year, inspired by making such a
difference.
How can you get involved?
• A tax deductible donation to our 2016 campaign will be
receipted by Variety The Childrens Charity. In exchange for your
donation, we would like to offer advertising space on our vehicle,
at all fundraising events we attend and also at the many towns
during the ten days of the event
• Donation of any prizes we can then auction during the
event.
• Donation of giveaways for kids as we make our way around the
Bash route, these may include anything from lollies for fun, to
hats, stickers, toys, school equipment and everything in
between.
As a team, we have always made the utmost effort to make as much
of a difference as possible for not only Aussie kids and their
families…but also to the fundraisers participating in the event who
have personally invested a lot of time and money to support Aussies
less fortunate. We have created a fun and colourful theme that
stands out, dress up and are always in the thick of the action
by participating fully in the spirit of the Bash.
We are also very proud of our achievement of twice reaching the
goal of being in the top 10 fundraising teams. Not only does this
help the kids as much as possible and generates a lot of publicity
for the car and therefore our sponsors, but is quite a feat
considering there are normally between 100-200 teams entered each
year.
Our goal this year is to set a new record for the first VW Kombi
to drive the track on the morning of the actual race with the V8
Supercars and especially due to the colourful nature of our theme
and our tendency to make a big impression within the media, we
intend on using this incredible opportunity for publicity to spread
the wonderful work Variety does and all our sponsors who support as
year after year so we can do what we do.
For more information on the wonderful work Variety does, please
go to www.variety.org.au or to keep up with updates of our campaign
and the Bash, please check out our Facebook Page that is updated
regularly
