Twelve years ago, Houston Chil- dren’s Charity was created to address this very problem. Since then, our desire has consistently been the heart of our mission statement: to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. We can’t take on such a daunting task, though, without you: our friends and dedi- cated supporters. In the past year, your gen- erorsity has helped us provide a small ray of sunshine in the otherwise dismally dark lives of many families in our great city. Through our bed program, “ABetter Night’s Sleep,” you’ve helped children sleep sound- ly. Through our van program, “Chariots for Children,” you’ve helped broaden the edu- cational and cultural horizons of countless children. You gave Christmas to over 1,800 children who would otherwise not have had one. You also helped send four hard- working and deserving students to college through our Scholarship Program. As we approach a busy time of year with our 12th Annual Gala on October 25th and Christmas programs that will follow shortly thereafter, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. My sincerest ap- preciation goes to you, our friends, not only for the unwaivering support you’ve given in years past but for all of the wonderful moments of generosity that you will surely be a part of in the future. I look forward to working with you as we make an impact in the lives of Houston’s underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The growth ofAdopt-A-Family
2006
33 families, 88 children
2007
67 Sponsors, 100 families, 266 children
Symptoms of sleep deprivation in children: - Moodiness & irritability - Tendency to emotionally ‘explode’ at
the slightest provocation - Over-activity & hyperactive behavior
Effects of sleep loss on children: - Sleep loss causes a range of problems in school, including naughtiness and
poor concentration. - Sleep problems in teenagers are associated with increased risk of disorders such as depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
How much sleep is enough? - Primary school children – need about nine to
10 hours. Studies show that increasing your child’s sleep by as little as half an hour can dramatically improve school performance.
- Teenagers – need about nine to 10 hours, too. Teenagers have an increased sleep requirement at the time when social engagements and peer pressure cause a
reduction in sleep time.
