The cover artwork is one of a series of four paintings by Alan Stein, based on a tone poem, Images at Nightfall, Georgian Bay, by Srul Irving Glick. The work, dedicated to James Campbell, was commissioned by the Festival of the Sound for performance on August 6, 1989 and will be heard again on July 19. A long-time friend of the Festival of the Sound, Srul Irving Glick died in 2002. The four paintings will be on exhibit throughout the Festival accompanying the Painted Sound exhibit and the cover painting will be available as a souvenir poster.

FESTIVAL OF THE SOUND
JULY 18 TO AUGUST 10, 2003
PARRY SOUND, ONTARIO
Dear Friends,
I can’t believe it is actually happening. This summer, the Festival of the Sound will be in its new home on the shores of Georgian Bay. I feel as excited as I did when, as a child, I impatiently laced up my skates in a mad rush to join the first shinny game of winter. Or when I opened the case of my first clarinet and was greeted by the sight of shiny new keys and the lovely scent of oiled wood. The anticipation may even surpass the thrill I recall when, at age 9, I unwrapped the new Toronto Maple Leaf hockey uniform my parents bought me as a bribe to
continue one more year of music lessons.I happily admit to childlike excitement
over this summer’s Festival and I can’t wait to welcome you and see the anticipation on your faces when you enter the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts for the first time. Imagine the sounds we will enjoy in this wonderful space, not only this summer, but for decades to come. Imagine the pride we will feel as our new hall, our “concert cottage”, joins the ranks of the world’s great venues.
I can hardly wait. Can you?

Highlights
Pinchas Zukerman & NAC Chamber PlayersSUNDAY JULY 20 2:00 P.M.
The first chamber concert in the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall will be a special one indeed. Pinchas Zukerman has long been recognized as a phenomenon for his musical genius and prodigious technique. His devotion to young generations of musi-cians has been applauded worldwide. He makes his first Festival of the Sound appearance with a chamber ensemble from the National Arts Centre orchestra.
Festival FoundersSUNDAY JULY 20 7:30 P.M.
In 1979, Anton Kuerti and Kristine Bogyo presented three concerts, inspiring a small group of volunteers and Board members to work with them. These were the first of literally hundreds of individuals who have offered an incredible amount of dedication, creativity, energy and love for music over the Festival’s 24-year history. We honour that vision and commitment with this special cello and piano recital.
Jazz Canada: Canadian LegendsSATURDAY JULY 26, SUNDAY JULY 27
For the second annual Jazz Canada weekend, Artistic Advisor Dave Young is bringing Canadian Jazz Legends. Ian McDougall, PJ Perry and Guido Basso join Dave, Phil Dwyer and Michel Lambert.
CelebrationsThe theme of Celebrations runs through our concert series. We celebrate our own special season by marking the 10th Anniversaries of the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, The Gryphon Trio and the Rhijnauwen Festival, the 20th Anniversaries of the Hannaford Street Silver Band and Reizend Musiek Gezelschap, the 50th Anniversary of the Allegri String Quartet and the 100th Anniversary of the Yamaha piano.
Music From the Inside OutJames Campbell’s invitation to “eat, sleep, breathe and live music for a few days, just as musicians do for most of their lives” is extended once again. As well as the Discovery Series, lectures and masterclasses, Orchestras Canada is planning a Chamber Music Canada conference during week two. Watch the website and programme booklet for sessions open to the public and free open rehearsals.
marks the most exciting season in the Festival of the Sound’s 24-year history. After many seasons of wonderful music in the gym at Parry Sound High School, our dream has come true. We will be taking our wonderful music, musicians and audience with us to the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. The stonework and woodwork are breathtaking in their beauty. But only as the music is shared, ovations offered, minds stimulated and friends greeted, will the centre take on the spirit that has made the Festival of the Sound so unique. There will be choral music, a brass band, piano recitals, outstanding singers, winds, strings and jazz, all helping us to make the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall our own.
Gala OpeningFRIDAY JULY 18
A whole day of ceremonies and special events (watch our website for details as they emerge) leads up to the Gala Opening Concert in the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall. The first notes heard in this space are by Eleanor Daley, a native of Parry Sound. The Elmer Iseler Singers are joined for the occasion by singers from the community. The first words, A song is born in Georgian Bay, are appropriate for a moment that represents the realization of dreams and the hope and potential present at every new birth. A fundraiser for the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts, a tax receipt for $60 will be issued for every ticket purchased.
Painted Sound – Opening SATURDAY JULY 19
The Canadian Society for Painters in Watercolour is marking our special season with a juried exhibit of works by the Society’s members from across Canada. A concert Painted Sound at 2:00 P.M. on July 19 includes a commissioned work by Abigail Richardson, inspired by a painting by Wendy Hoffman, cspwc. You are invited to the official opening of the exhibit at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, July 19.

16 Festival of the Sound 1-866-364-0061 1-866-364-0061 Festival of the Sound 17
The Festival of the Sound began in 1979 and soon established goals including “a suit-able, architecturally artistic building”. The opening of the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts fulfills that dream.
The area’s natural stone and wood is showcased in the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall, an intimate 480-seat hall, with the warmth and feel of a Georgian Bay cottage. Patrons will have comfortable reserved seats and musicians will enjoy real dressing rooms and a Green Room with a view of Georgian Bay sunsets. At intermission, all will enjoy the same view through the expansive curtain wall of glass overlooking the Bay.
Charles Wilson StockeyCharles Wilson Stockey was born July 4th, 1917 in Toronto. His parents were early settlers of the Moore Park area where he enjoyed the undeveloped fields, ravines and rivers. As a boy he was introduced to Ontario’s north and soon set out on his own to find places to fish, hunt and camp.
After living in Toronto for 50 years, he moved to Lake Joseph and became involved with the Festival of the Sound, serving on the Associate Board. Since 1988, he has lived in Victoria where his home is open to
advanced piano students of the University and Conservatory for practice or recitals. Both Charles and his wife Lois enjoy and welcome these young musicians.
The Festival of the Sound is honoured that the building is named after a life-long friend of music and the arts and a long-time supporter of the Festival, Charles W. Stockey.

Charles W. Stockey Your donation to the Festival of the Sound means continued artistic excellence coupled with financial stability. Ticket revenue provides only about one-third of the cost of pre-senting our concert series each summer. Individual dona-tions are necessary to help to keep the Festival growing to meet the challenges and opportunities that the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts will bring.
All contributions are gratefully received and are eligible for a tax credit receipt. A donation of $25 or more means that you will become a member of the Festival of the Sound, entitled to receive a pre-Christmas mailing with special offers, our newsletter Soundings outlining advance information about the upcoming season, early mailing of the season brochure and listing in the souvenir programme. Rather than designating one night as Patron’s Night, the Festival Board offers contributors of $250 or more two tickets to their concert of choice (excluding cruises, special events and concerts priced at $40 or more).
Your investment in the future of the Festival of the Sound is very much appreciated.
