IntroductionIn this presentation I’m going to be talking about one of

the emerging network technologies, this technology is 3D Printing.

First ever 3D PrinterThe first working 3D printer was created in 1984 by

Charles W Hull who owned a company called “3D Systems”

Here is a picture of him with the 3D printer:

Description & Explanation on how 3D Printing works

A simple description of 3D Printing is that it will print a complete physical object. It does this by layering down many thin layers of the appropriate material to create whatever is wanted from the user.

Here is a picture of the typical 3D printer at the moment although it is an ongoing technology. In the future the look of it is highly likely to change.

They can vary on their appearance a lot, for example some are a lot bigger and others are a lot smaller and more compact.

More explanation on 3D Printing and also talking about how it can be a help to peoples healthHere is a short video from YouTube it explains 3D printing

in general and also gives ways 3D printing could improve peoples health:

Magazine article on 3D PrintingHere in this magazine article is a lot of information going

into detail on 3D Printing: http://www.rdmag.com/articles/2014/04/3-d-printing-new-manufacturing-staple

Companies known to have used 3D Printing Ford –Ford has been using 3D Printing for a while and

make car parts, recently making their 500,000th part being an engine cover for the new Ford Mustang. The Ford web site says that 3D Printing gets things done on 4 days that would take the normal method 4 months to complete.

Boeing – This is an airline company that adopted 3D Printing in order to make parts. These parts were included in the making of 10 military and commercial planes. The company also printed an entire cabin.

Page 11: Gail 3d printing

General Electric – General electric have also invested a lot into the upcoming technology of 3D Printing. They have produced 85,000 fuel nozzles for jet engines using this method. The company plan to expand their production of fuel nozzles by getting more 3D Printers and more staff.

American Pearl – American pearl are using 3D Printing in more of an interactive way by letting customers create their ring or piece of jewellery then order them online then 3D Print them. This makes it able to personal for example an engagement ring.

Page 13: Gail 3d printing

Nike – In recent developments nike has been able to use 3D Printing to create football boots such as: “Nike Vapor Laser Talon” and the “Vapor Carbon Elite”. Both have parts made from a 3D Printer. Nike have also said there is plans to make other products using 3D printing in the future but haven’t specified what yet.

AdvantagesCustomisation – The ability to completely customize to

whatever is wanted by the user. Environmentally Friendly –3D Printing is energy efficient

as well as being able to make use of about 90% of standard materials. This then makes less waste.

Complexity – The levels of complexity which 3D Printing has means that the products it produces can just not be done any other way.

Disadvantages3D Printing may not all be good. Here is a few reasons

why:Objects can very easily be coped by using 3D printing

such as: House keys, this is an obvious security risk because people can get free access to your house. Also general products from places such as IKEA can be copied.

Will households have a 3D Printer in the future?Chances are in the future the average household will

have a 3D printer in it. At the moment 3D printing is not sophisticated enough to be used in a general household but in the coming years it’s a definite possibility.

Page 17: Gail 3d printing

EvaluationOverall 3D printing doesn’t really have any real floors

apart from the few I discussed about it being easily able to breach copyright. It may be a few years before most households own a 3D printer but there is no doubt that eventually they will with all the benefits that one will give.
